Crystal Palace-Leicester viewing number beats Orlando-LA Galaxy MLS game on FOX

The viewing number for MLS’ first over-the-air broadcast on English-language television in 2017 is in, and the news isn’t good. In previous years, whenever Premier League TV ratings in the United States have beaten MLS viewing numbers for games played during the same weekend, MLS apologists have insisted it was due to Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal or another big Premier League club being featured. “Let’s see how a Crystal Palace or Hull City compare,” some would say. Well, for this past weekend on US television, we have an apples-to apples comparison. The viewing numbers released today show that a game ... Read more

Orlando open new football stadium with win but Kaka injured

Miami (AFP) – Cyle Larin’s header in the 15th minute was enough to let Orlando City SC open their new stadium with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC Sunday on Major League Soccer’s opening weekend. It wasn’t all good news for Orlando, however, as Larin’s header came minutes after Brazilian veteran Kaka limped off with a left hamstring injury. He was replaced by Giles Barnes, who was acquired from Vancouver for Brek Shea in the off-season and took advantage of his opportunity with a deft cross to set up Larin’s goal. “We suffered a lot in this game,” ... Will Johnson’s last stand at Orlando City SC

It’s been a tumultuous two years for Will Johnson. On September 27th of 2014, Johnson, then the Portland Timbers’ captain, collided with Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom less than a minute into a game at BMO Field in Johnson’s hometown of Toronto and broke his right leg. Johnson wouldn’t play first-team football again until May of 2015, when his return to the Timbers lineup sparked a run of five straight wins for a Portland team struggling to the point of supporter protest. But the good times wouldn’t last. Johnson needed follow-up surgery in September, the Timbers switched to a 4-3-3 ... Read more

Jason Kreis taking major risk in Orlando City job

When Jason Kreis announced that he was leaving Real Salt Lake to become the first manager of New York City FC after the 2013 MLS season, he said part of him wanted to take the type of risk he never got around to taking during his playing career. It was an admirable and perfectly understanding sentiment from a man who scored 108 MLS goals but never tested himself overseas or played in the World Cup. But the risk – as risks are wont to do – backfired. Consistently undercut by upper management and unable to find a winning formula for ... Read more
