Blue ‘Loons’ lick wounds after MLS mauling

Los Angeles (AFP) – Another game, another brutal, one-sided defeat.  Two games into their existence as a Major League Soccer franchise, and Minnesota United FC have done little to dispel grim predictions they may turn out to be one of the worst teams in league history.   On Sunday, the “Loons” launched their home season in near-arctic conditions, with snow blanketing the field at the TCF Bank Stadium as they faced fellow 2017 expansion side Atlanta United FC. With the mercury plunging to 19 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 Celsius) at kick-off, the game was officially the coldest in MLS history. Yet ... Read more

Los Angeles (AFP) – The Portland Timbers handed Minnesota United FC a rude welcome to Major League Soccer with a 5-1 thrashing of the expansion side as the 2017 season kicked off. Minnesota are one of two expansion teams to join the MLS this season along with Atlanta United FC. But the rookie club managed by former Everton ... Read more

Is Minnesota United doing enough to be competitive in their first MLS season?

There are two expansion sets readying to enter to MLS this year. Chances are, you’ve heard plenty about one of them. How faith and hard work paid off for Minnesota’s soccer supporters

Minnesota is perhaps the most deserving market for MLS that has joined the league since Portland was announced in April 2009. The region, which has played host to a team in a professional league since 1990 — the longest such streak for any American market — has been through its ups and down of the “wild wild west” of lower division soccer. In the early 2000’s, the Minnesota Thunder were among the most successful teams in the lower divisions in terms of attracting fans. But the lack of a suitable venue close to the city center in either Minneapolis or St Paul ... Read more
