Arena cautious about Dempsey return

Los Angeles (AFP) – United States coach Bruce Arena said he will take a cautious approach before recalling Clint Dempsey to the national team as the striker works his way back to fitness following a heart problem. Dempsey scored in Seattle’s opening defeat against Houston last weekend, his first Major League Soccer game since being sidelined last year following the discovery of an irregular heartbeat. The 33-year-old’s return to action has led to speculation he could be in line for a recall to the US squad as they build towards crucial World Cup qualifiers this month against Panama and Honduras. ... Dempsey out for rest of the season over heart problem – club

Los Angeles (AFP) – US international striker Clint Dempsey has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2016 season as he battles his irregular heartbeat problem, his club said Tuesday. The Seattle Sounders said the forward, who returned to light training on September 14 after discovery of the problem in August, had stopped training again last week. The development means Dempsey, 33, will miss Seattle’s push for the Major League Soccer playoffs as well as the USA’s upcoming friendly against Cuba and a crunch World Cup qualifier with Mexico in November. “Unfortunately we’ve got to rule him out for ... Clint Dempsey nets 50th as USA rout Costa Rica at Copa America

Chicago (AFP) – Clint Dempsey scored his 50th international goal as the United States reignited their Copa America campaign to ease the pressure on coach Jurgen Klinsmann with a 4-0 win over Costa Rica. The host nation, beaten by Group A rivals Colombia in the tournament opener on Friday, produced a devastating first half goal blitz on Tuesday to sink their rivals from the CONCACAF region on a warm night at Soldier Field. Dempsey opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Jermaine Jones and Bobby Wood struck just before half-time to effectively settle the contest. Substitute Graham Zusi added a ... Read more

The time has come to worry about Clint Dempsey’s US national team future

Most soccer fans aren’t naïve to the cruel inevitability of the professional game. Yesterday’s wow-wow hero is today’s trade bait, or a conversation starter as a bunch of us Monday morning center backs discuss who should, shouldn’t, might or might not wave goodbye to the international game. So we knew the day would come when Clint Dempsey would no longer be around to rescue US pride with Deuce Face or, more importantly, to rescue US World Cup endeavors with one of his signature goals. His trademark strikes were one part skill, one part scrappy kid from the East Texas scrub. ... Read more

Clint Dempsey is a great player but a poor role model as USMNT captain

You’ve heard it by now, but Clint Dempsey lost it again on Tuesday night. It was the fourth round of the US Open Cup, Seattle Sounders against the Portland Timbers. The game was in extra time, and the Sounders, through both misfortune and misdeed, were down to nine men against Portland’s 11. The Sounders had just lost another man, midfielder Michael Azira to a straight red card for a stomp on Portland’s diminutive Argentine playmaker Gaston Fernandez. They were down 2-1, and on their way out of the tournament in the most acrimonious of circumstances. Dempsey had come into the ... Read more

Clint Dempsey should get 3-month ban after ripping up ref’s notebook

So Tuesday night in their US Open Cup match against Portland, the Seattle Sounders were probably hard-done by a series of bad calls by a relatively inexperienced official. And certainly this tournament means a lot to the Sounders. Add the burn of losing to their Cascadian rival, and it was a pepper pot ready to boil over. Then Clint Dempsey lost it. Playing down two men (one by a sending off, the other via injury after exhausting their 3 subs), referee Daniel Radford had the gall to give Michael Azira his own trip to the showers. That was the end of ... Read more
