London (AFP) – FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Wales and Northern Ireland over the display of commemorative poppy symbols in their recent matches, the world governing body announced on Wednesday. Both countries’ football associations opted against allowing their players to wear black armbands with poppy symbols, but they have been charged anyway. Both have vowed to contest the charges. Azerbaijan bear the Brunt of Northern Irish firepower

Belfast (AFP) – Chris Brunt put behind him the disappointment of missing Euro 2016 as he scored one and made another in Northern Ireland’s 4-0 whipping of Azerbaijan in their 2018 World Cup qualifier. Brunt, who missed Euro 2016 because of a serious knee injury, also played most of Friday’s match with his head bandaged after a clash of heads early on. However, the 31-year-old midfielder picked himself up and created Ireland’s second goal — Kyle Lafferty having put the hosts ahead — by Gareth McAuley before Colin McLaughlin added a third, his first international goal. Brunt then deservedly got ... Read more

N. Ireland decide against wearing poppies

London (AFP) – Northern Ireland’s players will not wear commemorative poppies in their World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan on Friday, the Irish Football Association said. The football associations of England and Scotland, who meet at Wembley the same day, have decided to defy a ban by world governing body FIFA on political, commercial or religious symbols. But while their players will wear black armbands with poppies, the threat of sanctions by FIFA means Northern Ireland’s players will wear plain black armbands for their Armistice Day game in Belfast. People in the United Kingdom wear poppies to remember their war dead ... Read more

Germany down N.Ireland to extend perfect record

Hanover (Germany) (AFP) – Ruthless Germany made it three wins from three World Cup qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over spirited Northern Ireland on Tuesday to stay top of their group. First-half goals by Julian Draxler and Sami Khedira sealed the win in Hanover and the world champions have yet to concede a goal in their qualifiers for Russia 2018. Germany have lost just two of 85 World Cup qualifiers in their proud history and were in no mood to give the Northern Irish a first win on German soil for 33 years. With nine qualifying points to their credit, ... Read more

Northern Ireland expect tough times in Germany

Berlin (AFP) – Kyle Lafferty says Northern Ireland must ‘work their socks off’ in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Germany as they chase a first victory over the world champions for 33 years. Lafferty scored two goals off the bench in Saturday’s 4-0 win over minnows San Marino in Belfast, the same night Germany beat the Czech Republic 3-0 in Hamburg to keep their perfect record at the top of Group C. Northern Ireland are unbeaten after their two qualifiers, having also held the Czech Republic to a goalless draw in Prague last month, but Lafferty expects a tough night ... Read more

Buoyant Germany set sights on N. Ireland World Cup qualifier

Berlin (AFP) – Germany coach Joachim Loew wants the ‘same again’ for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland following his side’s demolition of the Czech Republic. Thomas Mueller scored twice and Toni Kroos also netted as Germany dominated the Czechs 3-0 on Saturday night. It was an impressive display from the hosts in Hamburg and the scoreline could have been much higher as Julian Draxler, Mario Goetze and Mueller all missed clear chances. Defenders Jerome Boateng and Jonas Hector suffered knocks, but Loew hopes the pair will be fit to face the Irish. “Jerome took a knock, Jonas has ... Read more

Northern Ireland hold Czechs to goalless draw

Prague (AFP) – Northern Ireland opened their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Group C rivals the Czech Republic in Prague on Sunday. Playing their first competitive game since their 1-0 defeat to Wales in the last-16 phase of Euro 2016, Northern Ireland relied on solid defence and breakaways throughout the game. In their best scoring chance of a rather dull first half, Paddy McNair saw his low shot stopped by Czech keeper Tomas Vaclik. The Czechs never managed to put the defensive visitors under real pressure during the first 45 minutes. Pavel Kaderabek, Milan Skoda ... Read more
