Arsenal have reportedly held talks with Mason Mount’s representatives ahead of the summer transfer window.

The current Premier League leaders are hoping to capitalize on the player’s precarious contractual situation at Chelsea. Mount has just one year remaining on his current contract and negotiations to extend his deal have stalled.

Mount is struggling through a difficult season

Goal is claiming that the Gunners are monitoring Mount as they look to improve their squad this summer. Despite previously being a key figure in the Chelsea team, the England international has seemingly fallen down the pecking order.

In fact, Mount has managed just one total start for the Blues since early February. This includes both legs of Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final matchup with Real Madrid.

Like most of his domestic teammates, Mount is enduring a tough season. He only has three goals and three assists in all competitions so far. Compare this to his stellar 2021/22 campaign in which he racked up over 25 total goal involvements. Those are the numbers which are attracting interest from the Gunners and Liverpool.

Arsenal and Liverpool will battle it out to sign Mount

Arsenal now join Liverpool as the potential favorites to sign Mount. The Reds are the club with the closest links to the midfielder in recent months. Jurgen Klopp is in desperate need of a squad overhaul this summer, particularly in midfield.

The German coach has even spoken highly of the Blues midfielder before and a move for the England international would make sense.

While Mikel Arteta’s side are having an excellent season, they also need reinforcements as well. The Premier League leaders have a very talented starting line-up. However, the overall squad is fairly thin. Mount would add quality depth to the squad, as well as being good enough to push for a starting place.

Declan Rice is undoubtedly Arsenal’s top transfer priority at the moment. The West Ham midfielder has been linked with a switch across London ever since last summer. Rice is even reportedly open to joining Arsenal as soon as the current campaign ends. It remains to be seen if the Gunners can grab both England internationals, given their considered financial approach.
