<p>Premier League legends Dirk Kuyt, Henrik Larsson, Ronald Koeman, and Dennis Bergkamp are planning to buy a club in England. They were unsuccessful in their 2019 effort to acquire Wycombe Wanderers.</p>



<p>However, they have returned with an all-encompassing strategy, this time with a fresh emphasis on clubs in the Manchester and Birmingham areas. This ambitious group isn’t content to just acquire a club; their goal is to completely revamp it, taking charge of everything from training to merchandise.</p>



<p>With their extensive backgrounds and distinct skill sets, every member of this A-list squad contributes significantly. Henrik Larsson is about to become head coach and hopes to bring his team-oriented, high-scoring mentality.</p>



<p>Known for his technical brilliance, Dennis Bergkamp intends to manage the institution and cultivate future stars. A key figure in the club’s administration will also be Ronald Koeman and his experience in management. Together, on-field performance and off-field sustainability will shape the selected club in a whole new way, according to their strategy.</p>



<h2>What did agent Rob Jansen reveal?</h2>



<p>In an interview with the KieftJansenEgmondGijp Podcast (via <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13133635/Arsenal-legend-joins-forces-former-Liverpool-forward-bid-buy-English-football-club-Celtic-icon-installed-manager-takeover-succeeds.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daily Mail</a>), soccer agent Rob Jansen said: “We are in the process of buying a club in England. I’m not allowed to say which club yet. I can say which group we will do it with. Ronald Koeman, Dennis Bergkamp, ​​Henrik Larsson and Dirk Kuyt.</p>

<p>“We are now looking at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/english-league-two-tv-schedule/">League Two</a> or <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/english-league-one-tv-schedule/">League One</a>. We do this with some people around us and we also have the financiers. It doesn’t have to be in London. The plan is to manage the football club in the broadest sense of the word.</p>



<p>“So, the way we think it should be. Training, hospitality, merchandising, marketing, everything. We have a group, and maybe one or two more will join. The names I mention will also do a certain job within the club. Henrik Larsson would like to become a head coach. Bergkamp will set up the academy. And Koeman also comes over to do his things.”</p>



<h2>How trio could shape English lower-tier clubs</h2>



<p>The worldwide appeal and distinctive fan experience of English soccer led the business to decide to focus on that market. Their strategy is to target northern English teams in the Manchester and Birmingham areas in particular, where there is a strong soccer culture and a dedicated fan base.</p>

<p>FOX Deportes, the Spanish-language sports channel from FOX, picked up the English-language TV rights to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/mexico-national-team-tv-schedule/">Mexico</a> national team. Yes, the Spanish-language channel is going to broadcast games in English. Currently, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/univision/">Univision</a> broadcasts the Mexico international games, such as friendlies, to Spanish-language audiences in the United States. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/fox-deportes/">FOX Deportes</a> will be the home for English-language audiences. </p>



<p>This deal starts with both of the friendlies Mexico is playing in during the October international break. On Saturday, Oct. 14, Mexico faces Ghana in Charlotte, North Carolina. Three days later on Tuesday, Oct. 17, Mexico is in action against four-time World Cup champions Germany. English-language audiences can watch both games on FOX Deportes. </p>



<p>Rodolfo Landeros will be the play-by-play voice on FOX Deportes alongside Mariano Trujillo on Saturday. On Tuesday, Trujillo is the analyst with Adrian Garcia-Marquez on play-by-play duty.</p>



<p>Carlos Sanchez, the executive vice president and general manager of FOX Deportes, says acquiring the English-language rights allows FOX to target those who speak both English and Spanish in the United States.</p>



<p>“The Mexico National Team inspires true passion and excitement across our audience,” Sanchez said. “Presenting these highly anticipated matches in English offers an exciting alternative for “El Tri’s” largely bilingual fanbase here in the United States.”</p>

<h2>Mexico airing on FOX Deportes in English</h2>



<p>As stated, Univision possesses the rights to the Spanish-language rights of Mexico games. Mexico does have a large following in the United States, and this increases fans’ access to <em>El Tri</em>.</p>



<p>FOX Deportes may have taken advantage of other broadcasters being disinterested in the English-language rights to the Mexico national team. A low fee would be a low-risk move for FOX Deportes to capture some viewers. Also, Mexico’s games during the international break are against World Cup-caliber opponents. Both games will have pregame and postgame coverage available on FOX Deportes.</p>



<p>Each match is also available on the FOX Sports app, but they require an authenticated login with a TV provider to ensure you get FOX Deportes.</p>

Peacock serves a crucial role for fans of the Premier League. There, Premier League viewers can watch <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/how-to-watch-majority-of-premier-league-games-for-4-99-month-20230403-WST-426572.html">most of the league’s games each weekend</a> during the season. Plus, those are English-language broadcasts.</p>



<p>NBCUniversal, which oversees both <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/peacock-soccer-schedule/">Peacock</a> and Telemundo’s operations, has the rights to World Cup games. As an added bonus for fans in the United States, NBC puts <em>all </em>of these games on Peacock. Reminder, Peacock is just $4.99 per month, making it among the cheaper streaming options in the United States.</p>



<h2>Does Peacock have English Women’s World Cup games?</h2>



<p>However, Women’s World Cup games on Peacock are available <em><strong>exclusively in Spanish</strong></em>. The English- and Spanish-language rights go into different contracts with FIFA. NBCUniversal’s branch with Telemundo has the Spanish rights. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/fox-announces-full-womens-world-cup-broadcast-schedule-20230425-WST-430009.html">English rights belong to FOX</a>, as they have since the 2015 Women’s World Cup.</p>



<p>Keep in mind that these Spanish games on Peacock are not exclusive to the streaming service. Just as in the men’s World Cup in 2022, Telemundo and Universo are broadcasting games during the competition. Peacock just provides an alternative way to watch at an affordable rate.</p>

<h5>Peacock remains a useful tool</h5>



<p>Americans looking to watch the Women’s World Cup in 2023 should not shy away from Peacock even though games are not in English. Peacock’s price point provides one of the cheapest options to watch the tournament. While both Telemundo (Spanish) and FOX (English) are available as OTA channels requiring just an antenna, Universo and FS1 would require some kind of pay-TV package.</p>



<p>Peacock is far cheaper than those. Plus, watching the Spanish-language broadcasts arguably captures the emotion of the game better than the English. Telemundo and Universo always have a talented crew working both the men’s and Women’s World Cup.</p>

<p>ESPN+ is a must-have for many soccer fans in the United States. ESPN’s acquisition of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/07/17/espn-faq-for-la-liga-everything-you-need-to-know/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">U.S. rights to LaLiga</a> was built on the development of streaming services for sports coverage.</p>
<p>Not only does <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/mWebq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the service</a> stream matches in English, but they also air every LaLiga game in Spanish. The decision to stream in both languages was frankly essential for the company and viewers.</p>
<p>Prior to LaLiga’s agreement with ESPN, beIN SPORTS held the television rights for the Spanish league in the United States.</p>
<p>During the last five seasons, beIN SPORTS en Español pulled nearly three times the amount of viewers than their English-language beIN SPORTS channel for LaLiga matches. ESPN, clearly aware of these numbers, made the wise decision to stream LaLiga games in both English and Spanish.</p>
<p>With the prominence of Spanish-language broadcasts, ESPN gave the language special attention. ESPN+ General Manager Russell Wolff spoke on the platform’s growth in both languages.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“We’ve seen steady subscriber growth overall on ESPN+ and have seen the Hispanic fan base grow as well,”</em> claimed Wolff in early 2020. <em>“Digital usage is up as well across the board, including on ESPN Deportes.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Additionally, Wolff mentioned the doors opened through the service’s multiple-language broadcasts. The boost in eyes watching the service means a consequential boost in possible advertisers.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“More content should equal more usage, which should also lead to more attention from advertisers,”</em> Wolff said.</p>
<p><em>“With Spanish-language broadcasts, we have more opportunities to offer partners the chance to speak directly to Spanish language subscribers, which is a desirable audience that is hard to reach.”</em></p></blockquote>
<h3>ESPN+ Spanish-language experience</h3>
<p>Undeniably, it is a positive to have the Spanish-language broadcasts through ESPN+. However, the user experience for Spanish-speakers is disappointing to say the least.</p>

<p>Yes, LaLiga matches and other viewing content can be streamed in Spanish. But, the actual navigation and commands in the app are in English no matter what subscribers watch. </p>
<p>ESPN+ does offer a <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/XxNNra" rel="noopener" target="_blank">sign-up process in Spanish</a>, but after you register for the app itself, it’s an all-English language experience.</p>
<p>A major factor for ESPN acquiring LaLiga rights in the U.S. was clearly to attract Spanish-language speakers. However, it appears as if ESPN could be doing more to help their target audience inside the actual app. It remains to be seen if the company currently has plans to make the necessary adjustments.</p>
<p>Yes, ESPN+ this week added a new section to the app entitled <a href="https:\/\/espnpressroom.com/us/press-releases/2021/09/espn-introduces-espn-mas-a-year-round-curated-collection-of-streaming-sports-content-for-and-about-hispanic-and-latinx-athletes-fans-and-communities/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">ESPN+ MÁS</a> that focuses on Spanish-language content, but it isn’t enough. All of the navigation on the ESPN+ app is still in English.</p>
<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/08/05/messi-to-leave-barcelona-as-contract-talks-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lionel Messi’s departure</a> from Barcelona to Ligue Un surely disappointed ESPN. Although the Spanish league will still remain one of the top divisions in European soccer, Messi’s departure certainly put a dent in ESPN’s projected subscriber growth.</p>


ESPN+ now broadcasts LaLiga coverage in the United States. Good news, they have English and Spanish. Bad news, the Spanish-language experience is subpar.

<p>As it’s World Cup draw week, I thought I’d share one of my favourite football stories with you, about the first ever World Cup, though it was only for domestic sides at the time.I heard this story for the first time when I was nine, due to it being made in to a television drama in 1981, called <a href="http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk/World-Cup-Captains-Tale-VHS/dp/B00004D2XM" target="_blank">a Captain’s Tale.</a> It made a real impression on me, because it seemed so far fetched, yet was true and here’s how it happened.</p>
<p>After the success of the first Olympic football tournament at the London Olympics of 1908, a gentleman by the name of Sir Thomas Lipton had an idea to have a World Cup. Whilst the Olympic tournament had been for amateur players only, Lipton wanted the best professional club sides in the world to compete for a trophy, which would be called the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. He approached the English F.A. who refused to have anything to do with such a nonsense.</p>

<p>It was sad to say, but in those days, the English F.A. tended to look down at most countries in the world and upheld it’s insular and rather outdated opinions for far too long. Suffice to say, they refused to play in the first 3 official world cups, as of course, England believed they were the best in the world and had no need to prove it by playing horrible little foreign teams. Maybe in those first 3 World Cups, England could have added another trophy to the meagre one World Cup win in the last 80 years, we’ll never know but it wouldn’t have hurt to have a go.</p>
<p>So, rebuffed by the English F.A., an employee of Sir Thomas Lipton suggested an amateur side be chosen, as the F.A couldn’t interfere and a request went out to the teams in <a href="http:\/\/www.northernleague.org/view_div1_tables.php">the Northern League</a>, which is still functioning and is part of the English non league pyramid system. The only side that came back with interest were West Auckland F.C., a side made up of coal miners from Durham. So, Lipton accepted them as England’s representatives and the team had to travel to Turin.</p>

<p>Now, somehow, this little team of coalminers managed to raise the majority of the funds required to travel all the way to Turin, most of them pawning personal possessions to enable them to reach their destination but it proved a sacrifice worth making. Drawn against top German side, Stuttgarter Sportfruende, in the semi final,&nbsp; Auckland ran out 2-0 winners and amazingly went on to beat F.C. Winterthur 2-0 too to become the first winners of the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy.</p>
<p>Returning to Durham as heroes, the club were once again invited to defend the trophy in 1911, but this time the opposition were a little more familiar. Facing the defending champions in the semi-finals were F.C. Zurich, but once again the amateurs would not buckle to the better equipped side and once again triumphed 2-0. This then set up a mesmerising final against the home side, Italian giants Juventus but amazingly West Auckland thrashed them 6-1.</p>

<p>Under the rules of the tournament, West Auckland were allowed to keep the trophy, but this is were the tale takes a sad turn. Almost bankrupted in no small part due to the travelling to Italy twice in two years, the team had to pawn the trophy to their landlady to cover debts but the side still went under in 1912.The club reformed in 1914 as <a href="http:\/\/www.westaucklandtownfc.co.uk/" target="_blank">West Auckland Town</a> and returned to the Northern League where they still remain to this day.</p>
<p>As for the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, it remained in the landlady’s family until 1960, when an appeal by the village of West Auckland saw them buy it back. Yet tragedy struck the club once more, when it was stolen in 1994 and has never been found since. A replica was commissioned and that now stands in the clubhouse, securely held a safe cabinet. This year also saw the club play Juventus in a friendly to <a href="http:\/\/www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/West-Auckland-village-football-team-take-on-Juventus-to-celebrate-winning-the-first-World-Cup-1909-article27070.html" target="_blank">celebrate the centenary of that first win</a>, which they lost 7-1, but fair play on Juventus for enabling the club to celebrate what must go down as one of the strangest stories in English football.</p>

<p><em>The Damned United</em> will be making its cinematic debut in the United States on a limited release this September 25, 2009 in New York City and Los Angeles.</p>
<p>And now Sony Pictures has officially launched the movie trailer for the film. It’s quite a bit different than the UK version. The US version focuses more on the dynamic of Brian Clough’s battle to unseat Don Revie from the power of being the best and most successful manager in English football at that time.</p>
<p>Sony Pictures has also launched a website to coincide with the upcoming launch of the film in the United States at <a href="http:\/\/www.sonyclassics.com/thedamnedunited/" target="_blank">http:\/\/www.sonyclassics.com/thedamnedunited/</a> The number of features is extremely limited right now, but I’m sure more information will be added in the next few weeks.</p>
