Kevin Egan departs beIN SPORTS during challenging times for network

Soccer analyst and presenter Kevin Egan is leaving beIN SPORTS for new opportunities in Atlanta.

Speaking exclusively to World Soccer Talk, Egan revealed: “While it’s true that my time in Miami has come to an end, beIN Sports and I have left the door open so that we may work together again. I’ve enjoyed nearly four full seasons with phenomenal competitions and colleagues, and I’m so grateful for my time there.

“My family and I will be relocating to Atlanta for personal and professional reasons. I’ve fallen in love with the city of Atlanta, which is now a hotbed for soccer, as well as TV Sports and Entertainment. I’ve recently signed a new deal with Atlanta United, and with some other work of mine in Atlanta too, it’s a move that makes complete sense.

“On a personal front, it brings our young family a lot closer to my wife’s parents, which we’re excited about.”

According to a beIN SPORTS spokesperson, Egan may be available in the future to appear on special coverage that airs on the channel.

“We would like to thank Kevin Egan and Terri Leigh for their stellar work with us here at beIN SPORTS and wish them nothing but success in their new endeavors,” said Antonio Briceno, beIN SPORTS’ Deputy Managing Director for the U.S. and Canada. “We are forever grateful for the time each of them spent with us and we welcome them with open arms for future opportunities to collaborate.”

Egan’s departure from beIN SPORTS is the second in a week after presenter Terri Leigh announced she’s returning to Canada to pursue new opportunities there.

Both Egan and Leigh have been consummate professionals in their careers. While Leigh transitioned into specializing on motor sports as well as continuing to do soccer from time to time, Egan has grown into his role as presenter and analyst at beIN SPORTS. His positivity as well as superb on-air presence have made him a fan-favorite at the channel. Together, in their separate roles for the broadcaster, Leigh and Egan have been shining stars in beIN SPORTS’ coverage.

Seeing two of the top presenters at beIN SPORTS exit the channel, however, is a worrying sign for the future of the Miami-based broadcaster. After losing distribution deals last summer with DIRECTV and Comcast Xfinity, World Soccer Talk understands that beIN SPORTS has been deploying cost-cutting measures and having talent become independent contractors instead of contracted employees.

World Soccer Talk reached out to beIN SPORTS for comment. “As the entertainment market in both distribution and content has become highly concentrated, independent voices from diverse political, demographic, and non-conglomerate sources increasingly struggle to reach American audiences,” said a beIN SPORTS spokesperson.

“The entire model of our business, namely the cable TV and multi-platform paid channel industries, are facing global threats with fewer customers willing to pay for content, piracy efforts aimed at stealing intellectual property rights, and the vertical integration of media companies and mergers of competitors. Despite these market realities, beIN SPORTS remains committed to making our world-class sports content accessible to our loyal fans, complete with the most talented sports journalists and analysis that our viewers have come to expect.”

beIN SPORTS recently acquired the English- and Spanish-language rights to Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, as well as continuing to be the home to the exclusive rights to LaLiga, Ligue 1 as well as other leagues and competitions.
