<h5>Nashville SC History</h5>



<p>Of all the teams in MLS, Nashville’s origins go the furthest down on the US pyramid. In 2014, a NPSL (amateur, de facto level four on the pyramid) club called Nashville FC was formed by local fans, with the intent to be a fan-owned outfit.</p>



<p>But in 2016, USL awarded an unrelated franchise to Nashville. In exchange for a one percent stake in team equity, the USL club acquired the colors, logo, and name of the NPSL team. Shortly after, the logo and name were changed slightly, to Nashville SC.</p>



<p>Before the club even kicked off in USL, however, they were purchased by the investors behind an MLS bid in the city, and in late 2017 Nashville was officially awarded a franchise. The USL side first played in 2018, making the playoffs in both its campaigns and finishing third overall in 2019.</p>



<p>Nashville would begin MLS play in 2020, opening at Nissan Stadium in front of nearly 60,000 fans. However just two weeks into the season, MLS shut down due to COVID-19. Due to cases on the team, they were unable to participate in the “MLS Is Back” bubble tournament in Orlando that summer. </p>



<p>They did, however, qualify for that season’s playoffs when play resumed. Nashville met fellow league debutants Inter Miami in the play-in round, winning 3-0. They made it to the MLS Cup quarterfinals before bowing out.</p>



<p>Fast forward three seasons and they’d have another dance with their expansion cousins Miami, this time in the 2023 Leagues Cup Final. But they were powerless to Messi Mania, as Miami completed their unbeaten run in the competition to win the title.</p>



<p>Nashville moved into Geodis Park in 2022, after playing two seasons in the NFL venue Nissan Stadium. The 30,000-seat stadium has also hosted the US men’s and women’s national teams in 2023.</p>

<p>Lionel Messi and Inter Miami defeated Nashville SC with penalties to win the Leagues Cup Final on Saturday night. The Argentine scored a stunner, but Miami could not hold off the pushback from Nashville. Even though Fafa Picault sent the game to penalties with a second-half goal, Miami persevered. The shootout reached the 11th round, where Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender not only scored his penalty but saved the spot kick of Nashville shot-stopper Elliot Panicco.</p>



<p>This revamped <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> competition drew headlines from across the globe. Much of that was because of Lionel Messi, who only <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/messi-free-kick-highlights-miamis-win-against-cruz-azul-20230722-WST-444734.html">played his first game for Inter Miami</a> less than a month ago. However, his scintillating form with the south Florida club carried one of the worst teams in MLS to its first trophy. Nine goals in six Leagues Cup games entering this competition made the Argentine, unsurprisingly, the top scorer in the competition.</p>



<p>Therefore, Messi’s opening goal in the first half was to be expected. Still, the quality of the goal may be Messi’s best since switching over to Inter Miami. Nashville kept Messi bottled up for the first 22 minutes. In his first real opportunity on the ball, Messi dribbled past Walker Zimmerman. With three more Nashville defenders converging, Messi unleashed a wicked left-footed shot into the top-left corner of Panicco’s goal. </p>

<p>It was Messi’s 10th goal of the tournament, three more than Bongokuhle Hlongwane of Minnesota United.</p>



<h5>Nashville pulls level with strong second half</h5>



<p>Even if all the eyes of the expensive tickets at Geodis Park were on Messi, it was the hosts to come out stronger in the second half. After 12 minutes, Nashville earned a corner. Fafa Picault touched a fairly tame effort toward goal. Miami’s Benjamin Cremaschi diverted the ball away. However, Drake Callender, attempting to come back to his goal line, deflected the ball in.</p>

<p>Both sides had strong chances in the remainder of the game. For example, Messi <a href="https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1693091955826200602" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hit the post</a> from outside the box with a shot across the face of goal. Yet, the biggest chance came moments before the full-time whistle. Sergio Busquets lofted a ball up to Leonardo Campana. Campana won a 50/50 against the Nashville defense, and he found himself through on goal against Panicco. After Campana dinked the ball over the goalkeeper, he could not get around his attempt. His final sliding shot <a href="https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1693097350758023549" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clanked off the post</a> and went out for a goal kick.</p>



<h2>Miami wins Leagues Cup Final with 11-round shootout</h2>



<p>With the Leagues Cup skipping a 30-minute extra time period, the final dove straight into penalties. Messi and Nashville’s Hany Mukhtar converted their penalties to get things started. However, Miami took a lead after Sergio Busquets scored and Callender saved Randall Leal’s shot. In the fifth round and with the game on the line. Panicco saved Victor Ulloa’s shot.</p>



<p>Over the next five rounds, each of the 10 players scored. On most occasions, the shooters tucked the balls away with venom. Eventually, the goalkeepers needed to step up. Callender roofed his shot with power. On the other hand, Panicco was not so fortunate. At a comfortable height for Callender, the American goalkeeper parried the ball away to ensure a Miami victory.</p>

<p>Inter Miami’s qualification into the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> Final against Nashville has not been kind to ticket prices. Although the World Cup winner’s appearance in the game is expected to drive up prices, they are too high. Pricing out the fans in Nashville continues the ‘pay-to-play’ nature that has plagued American soccer.</p>



<p>Understandably, it is a final. Already, that will make tickets more expensive. However, this is still an MLS game, just a cup final. It has no business being more expensive than the UEFA Champions League Final from this past season. Prices for the final between Manchester City and Inter Milan started at $75.</p>



<p>The lowest ticket available for the Leagues Cup final is $485 according to the official Leagues Cup seller Ticketmaster. That absurd price gets a middle-of-the-section ticket in the corner of the stadium. </p>

<p>For comparison, the most expensive standard admission ticket on Ticketmaster is just shy of $1,500. That’s not from a reseller, who is trying to take advantage of the Messi craze to turn his or her ticket into a profit. That’s a standard admission ticket price that’s set by Ticketmaster and MLS.</p>



<p>With the resale tickets, some of them are less expensive than what Ticketmaster is charging for standard admission. For instance, on <a href="https://vivid-seats.pxf.io/c/330866/952533/12730?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vividseats.com%2Fnashville-sc-tickets-geodis-park-8-19-2023--sports-mls%2Fproduction%2F4552465" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vivid Seats</a> (one of our advertisers), prices for one ticket start at $396.</p>



<p>Still, prior to Messi’s visit to Subaru Park in Philadelphia this week, a Leagues Cup spokesperson said these official ticket prices come based on demand and comparisons to other major sports.</p>



<p>“The prices reflect the market demand for tickets similar to playoff pricing in all major sports events,” Leagues Cup spokesperson Felipe Martinez Amaral told the <em><a href="https://www.inquirer.com/soccer/messi-union-leagues-cup-prices-tickets-mls-soccer-20230814.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Philadelphia Inquirer</a></em>. </p>



<p>Even if it is likely these clubs sell the tickets, they are making it impossible for the average fan. Paying $500 for one game is ridiculous.</p>

<p>Compare that to this past season’s UEFA Champions League Final in Istanbul between Manchester City and Inter Milan. The lowest official ticket price for that game was just $75. Of course, resellers did shoot those ticket prices up in the long run to prices comparable with this Leagues Cup Final. However, the $75 is for a similar style of ticket to the aforementioned $450 ticket at the Leagues Cup game, which is tucked away in the corner of the stadium.</p>



<p>Worse off, Leagues Cup tickets are not generally included in the clubs’ season ticket passes. These season ticket holders did have the first selection on tickets, which has already passed. </p>

<h5>Nashville fans priced out of a home game</h5>



<p>The worst part about the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/inter-miami-and-nashville-advance-to-leagues-cup-final-20230816-WST-450403.html">Nashville game against Inter Miami</a> is that there is an abundance of tickets still available. Looking at ticket-purchasing websites, some sections are still half empty. Compare a section in the lower bowl in the Leagues Cup Final to a regular season MLS match. To see Messi and Inter Miami, Nashville fans would have to pay just shy of <a href="https://www.ticketmaster.com/leagues-cup-nashville-sc-v-inter-nashville-tennessee-08-19-2023/event/1B005F0EB07E8955" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$861 per ticket in row X</a>. Again, that is official admission, not a reseller. On Saturday, Sep. 2, which is the club’s next home game against Charlotte FC, a ticket in row R of the same section is a cool <a href="https://vivid-seats.pxf.io/c/330866/952533/12730?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vividseats.com%2Fnashville-sc-tickets-geodis-park-9-2-2023--sports-soccer%2Fproduction%2F4245786" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$27 on Vivid Seats</a>.</p>



<p>MLS may be trying to cash in on Messi’s popularity to make more money. In doing so, it is making it impossible for average soccer fans to add to the atmosphere of the first final of what MLS calls ‘<a href="https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/leagues-cup-2023-dates-and-structure-announced" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">historic</a>.’ Unfortunately, the main part of history for many of these fans is their inability to watch in person with exorbitant entry fees.</p>

Outrageous Leagues Cup final ticket prices are bad look for MLS

Inter Miami's qualification in to the Leagues Cup final against Nashville has not been kind to ticket prices or fans in Nashville.


<p>Inter Miami continued its impressive run in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> by beating Philadelphia Union 4-1 on Tuesday. Lionel Messi was once again the star of the show, as he scored in his sixth consecutive game with his new club. The Argentine now has an incredible nine goals in those six matches. Miami’s victory takes the team to the Leagues Cup final against fellow <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">Major League Soccer</a> opposition.</p>



<h5>Visitors set the tone early with a goal inside three minutes</h5>



<p>Striker Josef Martinez put the <a href="https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1691589774841205057" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visitors ahead early in the game</a> with a goal in the third minute. With the Union defense backing off, defender Sergii Kryvtsov played a long ball over the top toward Martinez. The striker collected the ball and sent a low strike into the bottom corner of the net.</p>



<p>Miami would then double its lead in the 20th minute with a goal from Messi. The superstar picked up possession near midfield, raced toward the box, and hit a shot from distance to beat a diving Andre Blake in goal. Blake will be disappointed to be beaten from such range, but the ball was perfectly placed into the far corner.</p>

<p>The visitors grabbed a third goal just before the halftime break. Robert Taylor played a beautiful through ball toward Jordi Alba. With just the keeper to beat, Alba fired a shot beyond Blake to extend Miami’s lead. The hosts would eventually score in the 73rd minute to make the match interesting. However, Miami <a href="https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1691615407755432246" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">added a fourth</a> with just six minutes remaining on the clock to put the game to bed.</p>



<h2>Nashville holds off Monterrey to set up Miami clash in Leagues Cup Final</h2>



<p>Miami will face Nashville in the Leagues Cup final after the MLS side took care of Monterrey in the other semifinal matchup. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/liga-mx-tv-schedule/">Liga MX</a> side had significantly more possession and total shots on the night, but couldn’t break down the stingy Nashville defense. </p>



<p>Weathering the storm, the hosts finally went ahead in the 67th minute of the match. Hany Mukhtar picked up a loose ball on a counterattack and played Sam Surridge inside the box. The striker coolly beat the Monterrey goalkeeper with a neat low shot into the bottom of the net.</p>

<p>Nashville would put the finishing touches on the game with a <a href="https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1691655824966390028" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">goal late in added time</a>. The goal was fairly similar to the opening strike, as Nashville won the ball back thanks to a solid header in defense. Surridge then headed a pass toward Fafa Picault deep in Monterrey territory. The winger beat his marker and sent a shot over the keeper to double his team’s lead.</p>



<p>The Leagues Cup final matchup will feature two teams in drastic places in the MLS Eastern Conference table. Miami is currently bottom of the division, while Nashville sits fourth. Nevertheless, Miami’s recent additions have completely transformed the squad. The final is set for Saturday, Aug. 19 at Geodis Park in Nashville. </p>

Inter Miami and Nashville set up an all-MLS Leagues Cup final after advancing to the title match on Tuesday night.


<p>Basketball superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is leading an investment group that has bought a minority stake in Nashville SC. The two-time National Basketball Association MVP and 2021 champion has teamed up with hockey’s Filip Forsberg in the move. Antetokounmpo’s brothers Thanasis, Kostas and Alex are also part of the group as well.</p>



<p>“My father was a professional soccer player and it was the first sport I fell in love with,” <a href="https://www.nashvillesc.com/news/filip-forsberg-giannis-antetokounmpo-join-nashville-soccer-club-ownership-group" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Giannis. “I’ve always had the dream of owning a soccer team. When my brothers and I explored Nashville SC, we knew it was a team and a city that we wanted to get involved with. I couldn’t be more excited to join the Boys in Gold, and can’t wait to come to a match at GEODIS Park soon!”</p>



<p>Charles, the father of the Antetokounmpo brothers, played soccer professionally in Nigeria and Germany.</p>

<p>Forsberg is quite familiar with Nashville, as he has spent his entire National Hockey League career with the Predators. The Swede is also the team’s leading scorer in franchise history. “Nashville is the best sports city in the country, and I am extremely blessed to now be involved with two of our pro teams,” <a href="https://www.nashvillesc.com/news/filip-forsberg-giannis-antetokounmpo-join-nashville-soccer-club-ownership-group" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Forsberg. </p>



<p>“Our city is one big family and fanbase, and we support each other on and off the field. Nashville SC has been such a great addition to our sports culture, and joining the ownership group was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up. I grew up a Liverpool FC fan in Sweden and after today I am happy to add a second set of colors to cheer for!”</p>



<h2>Antetokounmpo join list of famous investors at Nashville SC</h2>



<p>Majority owner John Ingram has been welcoming investors since establishing the team in 2017. Minnesota Vikings owners, the Wilf family, previously joined the team as minority investors as well. Actress Reese Witherspoon, her husband Jim Toth, and football star Derrick Henry have also become part-owners in recent years.</p>



<p>Nashville was initially awarded a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">Major League Soccer</a> expansion franchise in 2017. The club then officially joined the top flight league three years later and has had success since.</p>
