The new Premier League season is dawning on us and many are wondering what to expect and whether it is even worth trying to expect anything from this season. From the wonders (or woes if you’re a Newcastle fan) of last season with Chelsea finding themselves outside of the top four and Leicester City winning the title, it’s anyone’s guess as to what kind of ride we’re in for. But one thing’s for certain: Leicester have created a name for themselves, a legacy. Nothing can surpass what has happened for the club in the past two years – maybe winning the UEFA Champions League, I guess – and this is something that will go down in history. Against all odds, literally, Leicester gained the top prize for English clubs at the domestic level.

So looking ahead to the upcoming season, there are two things that can happen in the Premier League. The first being a move back to the status quo. The soccer elite, also known as the big six, could go back to dominating the Premier League. More than likely, the title will be a toss up between Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. It would make Leicester’s title winning season a blip for the big clubs, essentially a one hit wonder. They’d have the legacy of being the only club to outsmart the rich elite. Leicester’s team, worth only half of what Manchester City paid for Raheem Sterling (a ridiculous £44 million), is something that goes against all theory.

Money, to an extent has been able to buy football, but it couldn’t buy the passion and togetherness that the Leicester team experienced last season, and it was this teamwork, so rare, so unique, that provided the catalyst for a title winning season. This legacy is one that Leicester fans would treasure forever, something they’d always be able to hold against clubs outside the big six.

But there’s an alternative. Leicester’s success in bucking the trend could continue. Now that other clubs know it’s possible, they might have new goals, new ambitions. The Southampton’s and West Ham’s of the world won’t just stand and applaud Leicester’s success. They’ll want to be next.

With the upcoming season being unpredictable, there’s all the chance that this may happen and Leicester shouldn’t feel disheartened at their achievements if it does. It wouldn’t lessen Leicester’s success but strengthen it. The Foxes would become an inspiration to other clubs; they will have changed the nature of football much like Brexit has changed the nature of politics. To be the club that made it possible for anyone to beat anyone, for anyone to challenge for the title, is monumental. It’s the one thing that the Football League currently holds against the Premier League — its competitiveness. It’s imperative for the Premier League to keep adapting to continue to be the best league in the world.

Leicester are now able to attract some of the world’s best footballers, something that wouldn’t have been possible a couple of seasons ago when they were fighting relegation to the Championship and the same can be said to the rest of the clubs in the league. The opening up of the title race, and the ability for more teams to compete makes it even more appealing to the top players. If the likes of Robert Huth and Wes Morgan can have Premier League-winning medals, why can’t others?

So whatever happens next season, the future will always shine brightly on Leicester’s title winning season. It will go down in history. The legacy that Leicester has will always encompass the 2015/16 season. It was a break through the glass ceiling moment and other clubs will surely try to take a leaf out of Leicester’s book.
