Atletico Madrid have rejected reports linking the La Liga side with the summer signing of Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, according to club sources.

Earlier today, the French daily L’Equipe reported Atletico manager Diego Simeone had requested the club sign the Uruguayan forward as a stipulation for renewing his contract with the La Liga side.

The publication went on to claim contact had been made between the player and Simeone, and Atletico were preparing to sell off a number of their players in order to finance the deal.

But the Spanish publication AS has spoken to club sources who have blasted the reports as “false” and have emphatically stated the players named in the story – Mario Mandzukic, Arda Turan and Koke – are not for sale.

The same sources also pointed out that Cavani is “out of Atletico’s potential market” given the need for the La Liga club to balance its books.

Any deal for the Uruguayan striker would break the economic control the club works under as part of the LFP (Spanish football).
