Arsenal players Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Per Mertesacker and Jack Wilshere have taken part in a mockumentary video which sees actors – including Ewen Macintosh of The Office – take on the roles of their fictional relatives.

The four-minute video, entitled ‘Face to Face with the Arsenal Family’, introduces larger-than-life ‘family’ members of each of the featured players, telling the story of their journey to matchday at the club’s Emirates Stadium in tandem with using vehicles from Europcar, a club sponsor.

The characters – champion baker ‘Trudy Mertesacker’, ‘Uncle Kenny Wilshere’, a former schoolboy footballer who now works as a plumber and is also a keen poet, and plane spotter ‘Darren Oxlade-Chamberlain’ – are all reflected on by the players in a light-hearted way.

MacIntosh’s part sees the Welsh actor and comedian, who played Keith Bishop in The Office television series, appear as Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fictional cousin, talking about his hobby and being affectionately known as ‘The Shrub’ because he can stand still for long periods of time.

Like all of the Arsenal players, Oxlade-Chamberlain, who scored for England in the 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday night, found it fun taking part in the promotion, which saw their facial features digitally superimposed on the actors to help create a family resemblance.

He said: “I enjoyed the chance to do a bit of acting in the video. I did drama at school and had to drop acting for football so quite enjoyed the chance to relive my past.”

Actor Grant Davis played the part of Kenny Wilshere, with Lillian Schiffer as Trudy Mertesacker.
