Football Stars Collector Cards From 1986 Featuring British Football Legends: Photos

I’m nearing the end of looking through my box of English football collectibles that I found in my garage. I have one or two more items I’ll be sharing with you in the next 48 hours, but in the meantime, I wanted to share with you something different that I found. It’s a collection of beautifully photographed cards from a series called Football Stars, which was made by Fax-Pax and released in 1986.

The box (pictured top right) describes it as “a set of 36 informative picture cards featuring Britain’s football stars of today. Each card includes a full colour picture with career details on the reserve.”

As you can see from the above photo (click on it for a larger view), the series includes stars such as Steve Archibald (Blackburn), Terry Butcher (England), Peter Shilton (England), a young looking Tony Adams (Arsenal), Glenn Hoddle (England), Mark Hughes (Manchester United) and a very old looking Peter Reid (Everton).

I totally forgot about Steve Archibald at Blackburn. It’s probably more accurate to say I didn’t know he played for them.

I totally remember the Peter Reid dye job – it looked absolutely ridiculous.

    • The Gaffer says:

Same here regarding Archibald. I always remembered Archibald for his time at Spurs, Barcelona and Hibs, but totally forgot about his time at Rovers.

gaffer, i wish you werent near the end. ive been loving these posts. they have been so much fun to see players for decades ago including some we still see or hear on at least a weekly basis.

    • The Gaffer says:

Thanks John for the kind words. I have two more posts to go. One today and one tomorrow, and then my box of goodies will have been revealed to all. However, when I get a chance, I’ll see if I have any more collectibles in my garage that are worth sharing. And if so, I’ll be sure to post them on this site.

Was that picture of Shilton when he was at Derby??

  4. DaveG says:

Gaffer, how about a competition to see if anyone can guess the correct names of the players on the stickers.
I’ve got most of the ones you posted but would be a great to see if you could pick out a few tough ones and see if anyone could get them all, perhaps even add the clubs?

    • The Gaffer says:

Good idea Dave. Unfortunately most of the cards have the names of the players on the front, but I’ll be asking readers to see if they can guess who the stars are that will be featured in tomorrow’s post. Some of them will be easy, but there are a couple of tricky ones in there.

Hi love your site, the only thing I would recommend is to make plpoee aware that using the site online on safari is the best solution because I stumbled on the app from cydia and the source didn’t updated I almost gave up hope until I figured out why the app was so slow it must have been a widget off some sort.Another thing that would be nice is allow for a report Broken video button and not just because the video won’t load they have to refresh the page and be 100% certain.finally you guys should think of more ways for plpoee to donate because this site is used mostly by teens I presume and maybe you could allow us pay via phone credit to show our gratitude for such a great site.well that’s pretty much it the only other thing would be to clean up the interface making it more easy to browse around but that’s up to you guys best of luck
