Sportsnet acquires Bundesliga TV rights in Canada

Canadian media company Sportsnet has acquired the rights to broadcast the Bundesliga in Canada for the next 5 years.

In 2013, FOX Sports acquired the 2015-2020 Bundesliga TV rights for the USA and Canada. Since FOX doesn’t have a presence in Canada, FOX Sports decided to sub-license the Canadian rights to Sportsnet, who will launch their coverage of the league in August for seasons 2015/16 through 2019/20.

The agreement includes rights to the German Super Cup.

All matches will be available via Sportsnet World Now, which is their digital streaming product. Select Bundesliga matches will also be shown across SN1 and regional channels, as well as Sportsnet World.

For the first two months of the season, there will be an average of 3-4 Bundesliga games on television per week.

For more information, see Sportsnet’s TV schedule for Bundesliga matches.

Meanwhile, in the US, FOX Sports remained silent regarding its Bundesliga TV coverage plans.

From August 14th to September 27th, there will be 4 games on main channels (SN regional), 8 games on SN1, approximately 21 games on Sportsnet World and the rest Online.

I think SN main channels are equal to FS1, SN1 = FS2 and SNworld = FSoccer plus

We can buy SNworld online without TV subscription.

Say I use a VPN, would I be able to subscribe to the online only package for Bundesliga once it is advertised? Even though my billing statement would show I don’t live in Canada? I’ve often wondered if someone has already figured out how to do this with other world sports channels, regardless of where they live.

hmmm, not quite sure how it would work but I read somewhere before people from Canada are using VPN to access US channels.

You’ll have to see if it’s even worth it? SNworld does not have UEFA champions league games and it costs around 25 CAD plus TAX. SNworld has to update their site and maybe add Bundesliga package or reduce the price since they lost UEFA rights.

But mates, is VPN technically legal or not?

Will they be burying the league on obscure channels that most cable customers can’t get at any price the way like Fox?

Perhaps. Fox is an expert on that, though, in order to keep its Nascar Boogity Boogity crowd happy.

Actually it seems Sportsnet are treating the league better than FOX with a few games being shown on their main network (the regional channels) & others on their secondary national channel (SN1) or their equivalent of Fox Soccer Plus – Sportsnet World.
