Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has dominated the vast majority of competition he has faced across the globe. But there is one place where the Argentine has had a particularly difficult time finding the back of the net – England.

Messi has played a total of ten games on English soil, scoring only twice.

The Barcelona star man made his debut in the country back in 2006 against Chelsea and was held scoreless over two legs by Jose Mourinho’s side. The following season. the Catalan club were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Liverpool on away goals, with Messi once again failing to score when the team traveled to Anfield.

The Argentine forward’s scoring duck continued as Barcelona were once again knocked out of the European competition by Manchester United in 2008.

Although Barcelona would controversially sneak past Chelsea in the semi-finals of the tournament in 2009, Messi once again was held without a goal by Mourinho’s men.

During the 2010-11 Champions League campaign, Barcelona would face Arsenal twice – once in the group stages and again in the knockout portion of the competition. Despite easing past Arsene Wenger’s side, Messi’s struggles on English soil continued as the forward failed to score in two appearances at the Emirates.

That season, the four-time Ballon d’Or winner would eventually make his breakthrough on England’s biggest stage, Wembley Stadium, during the Champions League final against Manchester United.

Messi’s goal in the 54th minute broke the deadlock between the two European giants and lifted a huge weight of the diminutive Argentine’s shoulders. Barcelona would go on to win the contest 3-1, with Messi named as the UEFA Man of the Match.

But the following season, the Barcelona forward’s scoring jinx resurfaced at Stamford Bridge as the Spanish club were stunned by Roberto Di Matteo’s side over two legs – losing 3-2 on aggregate.

The good news for Messi, as well as Barcelona supporters, is that the forward is returning to fertile hunting ground when he arrives in Manchester later today. While the Argentine has failed to score at Old Trafford, Messi scored in his first appearance at the Etihad last season.

The Barcelona man eased a penalty past Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart to give his side a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute during the first leg. The La Liga club would go on to win the match 2-0, and follow that victory up with another at the Camp Nou (2-1, with Messi scoring again.).

So while the Barcelona forward’s scoring history on English soil makes for rough reading, fans can comfort in the fact that the Argentine has had recent success when he’s traveled to England.

Also, outside of this weekend’s results, Messi has been playing some of the best football of his career since the turn of the New Year.
