USA vs Colombia Preview: London Calling

Since taking over as head coach for the USMNT in July of 2011, Jurgen Klinsmann has made a point of scheduling tough opponents for international friendlies. He’s scheduled Italy in Genoa, France in Paris, Mexico at Azteca, Belgium in Brussels and Cleveland, and Brazil and Germany in Washington DC. Friday is no different as the USA takes on Colombia, currently ranked 3rd in the FIFA rankings and coming off a run to the quarter-finals at the World Cup this summer. The release of the USA roster on Monday revealed a few interesting names from Miguel Ibarra of Minnesota United, to Jordan ... Read more

Be Bold Jurgen: Pick These Players for the US Men’s National Team

Tomorrow Jurgen Klinsmann will announce the roster invitations for the U.S. national team camp.  These players will make up the eligible roster for selection for the January 29 friendly against Canada as well as possibly the February 6 World Cup qualifier in Honduras.  Usually, the January camp (loving referred to as “Camp Cupcake”) is a time for the national team to experiment with fringe players; it gives the coaches a chance to see young players who could one day work up significant playing time or older players who have earned a last chance at a cap.  With the camp occurring ... Klinsmann Unveils His First USMNT Roster

The U.S. v. Mexico rematch friendly is less than a week away, and today Jurgen Klinsmann unveiled his first list of call-ups as the head coach for the national team.  The Mexico friendly comes at a tricky time for the U.S., as the bigger European leagues are kicking off this month and Klinsmann might have hesitated to call-up players overseas in these leagues.  Mexico will also be missing key players, and with their national team having played in both the Gold Cup and Copa America this summer, they may use the opportunity to rotate eligible players. Nevertheless, the roster has ... Read more

Will Wondolowski Get a Call Up to the National Team?

Chris Wondolowski has had a dream season.  He finally broke out this year with a league-leading 18 goals and almost single-handedly led San Jose to the playoffs, where they will try and pull out a win at New York tonight.  He has shown the ability to score and lead a team, and with the national team gearing up for a friendly in South Africa later this month, should Wondo be included on that team? Bob Bradley recently has looked at MLS play as an indicator of who he should call-up for the team.  As we all know, Edson Buddle and ... Read more

Bob Bradley Signs to Coach USMNT Through 2014 World Cup

Reports have come out this evening confirming that Bob Bradley will stay as coach of the US Mens National Team for another four years.  Just as speculation was growing that Bradley would be out, Jurgen Klinsmann would be in, and US Soccer was going to make some significant changes before the next World Cup, it seems that everyone has chosen stability over transformation.  There are several different ways to look at this: This was the right move Bradley may not be the most charismatic character of all time, but he did well.  Under his stewardship, the US won the Gold ... Why the US is a Lock to Host the 2022 World Cup (or Maybe 2018)

There is some real drama about which European country will host the next World Cup.  Both England and Russia have submitted solid bids, and FIFA is going to have to think very deeply about which country will get to host this prestigious event.  However, FIFA is awarding both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups this December, and although several countries, including South Korea, Australia and Qatar are bidding for the other slot, the US is almost a guaranteed winner.  There are several factors in the US’s favor, but as with most things about FIFA, they come down to money. Nobody ... Read more

Landon Donovan is Going to Europe. It’s About Time.

In a post-game interview after last night’s All-Star game, Landon Donovan said “We have had transfer interest and we will have some time to think about it and see where it goes.  There is interest from a number of teams.” To be explicit, what Donovan said he is going to Europe, and it is not a matter of when (next month) but of who (Everton, Man City, Serie A or somewhere else) and at what price. Landon Donovan is, simply said, the best American soccer player of all time.  He has speed, ball skills, game vision, and a scoring touch ... Read more

It Is Time for the US to Win a World Cup Game

June 17 2002.  Mexico 0 – US 2.  That is the last time the US won a game in the World Cup.  It is time to do it again. Since that day eight years ago, the US has had a courageous defeat (Germany in 2002), several heroic fight backs (Italy in 2006 and England and Slovenia in 2010) and a couple of pathetic collapses (Czech Republic and Ghana in 2006).  It is time to put a W up on the scoreboard. For the US to advance into the knockout round next week, they need to beat Algeria.  There may ... Read more
