Why The LA Galaxy Are Not Contenders… Yet

The Los Angeles Galaxy’s come-from-behind 3-2 win at Rio Tinto Stadium this week sent the MLS crowd into a frenzy, proclaiming “The Galaxy are back!” and “they are who we thought they were!”.  To be honest, some of this was occurring as early as last Sunday on the heels of LA’s win over a struggling Portland team.  With maximum points from their last two contests, it looks like the preseason favorites could be building what we call a winning streak and beginning to assert themselves in the playoff race.  Ever the contrarian, however, I want to provide another perspective to ... Sporting KC Gets Statement Win Over Galaxy 1-0

The game was called the biggest matchup of the early season by ESPN’s Adrian Healey in the pregame. While this may have been an overstatement, yesterday’s match featured two teams that during the preseason many had as the best in their respective conferences.  After 90 minutes, only one looked like an MLS Cup contender. Sporting KC behind a raucous crowd of 19,000 plus rolled to a 1-0 victory over the LA Galaxy.  The Galaxy came into the game without designated player David Beckham but did return Landon Donovan to the line-up.  Beckham’s absence, however, was noticeable in a game where ... Three Offseason Questions for the Defending Champs: LA Galaxy

Today we wrap up our “Three Questions” series with the defending MLS champions, the Los Angeles Galaxy.  By any definition, they were the best team in MLS last season: they convincingly led the Supporters Shield’s race most of the season, looked like the best team in the playoffs, and won the MLS Cup.  They did it with glitz and glamour (the three designated players) as well as grit and determination (best defense in MLS, good midfield play).  In the end, they were possibly the most complete and dominant team in “modern” MLS history. But the page on the calendar has turned and the team ... Read more

Twelve U.S. Soccer Predictions for 2012

This past season in U.S. soccer was certainly an interesting one.  In MLS, two new teams were promoted and the soccer world fell in love with them and their passionate fans.  Coaches were hired and fired, players finally fulfilled their potential, and others failed to inspire.  One MLS team had a chance to make history and win the CONCACAF Champions League, but fell short in a heart-breaking fashion.  During the season, the team that dominated from First Kick forward hoisted the trophy at the end of the season.  Internationally, the U.S. women took Germany by storm but in the end ... Goats No More, Or A Bit Longer? Three Questions for Chivas USA

Chivas USA had a new head coach and a new system last season, but after a slow start the team looked to be set in neutral in the competitive Western Conference.  However, the acquisition of Juan Pablo Angel and a too late run at a playoff spot gave this team a bit of life and fans a reason for optimism.  As the club watched cross-town rivals the Galaxy celebrate with the MLS Cup in their stadium, the future looks mixed for the franchise. Next up in our 3 Questions series is Chivas USA, a team who has not qualified for ... Read more

MLS Finals Set as LA, Houston Cruise to Victory

The 2011 MLS Cup will truly be a David v. Goliath affair.  In this corner, you have the regular season’s best team with the most star power and biggest names who, by the way, will be playing at home.  In this corner, you have a team that fought all season for a playoff spot then beat some quality Eastern Conference sides while losing their MVP candidate to injury.  Such will be the storyline as the Los Angeles Galaxy face the Houston Dynamo on November 20 at 9 PM ET at the Home Depot Center. With an international break providing a ... Read more

Galaxy Go After the Big Name, Sign Robbie Keane

Photo by Fergal of Claddagh The Los Angeles Galaxy, looking at its rivals for the MLS Cup and seeing them focus more on acquiring American players overseas and trading amongst themselves, decided to make the big-named signing by acquiring Irish international Robbie Keane from Tottenham.  The cost of the contract is huge, rumored to be roughly $9.75 million over two years with the Galaxy sending about £3.5 million in transfer fees.  Obviously, this means Keane will be a designated player, which I will discuss below. Keane’s resume is spectacular, and I would encourage all Barclay’s Premier League rookies to take ... Read more
