Houston Machine Steamrolls DC to Take Eastern Conference

In retrospect, it was obvious.  Houston is so good playing with an aggregate lead in the playoffs and with DC missing Chris Pontius and a fully healthy Dwayne De Rosario, the task really was impossible.  But it didn’t feel that way at RFK Stadium Sunday afternoon, as a crowd of over 20,000 (including 350 standing room attendees) rocked the stands at kickoff, trying to inspire the home team to victory.  Despite the crowd and emotional return of the home team’s captain, the end result was a 1-1 draw and a 4-2 Dynamo win on aggregate. DC adjusted its lineup without ... Read more

DC Dominates in 4-2 Win Over Fire

What do the Michigan Bucks and DC United have in common? They are the only two teams to score more than two goals against the Chicago Fire in 2012, but last night the Fire could only blame themselves (and not dodgy turf or a backup XI) for an embarrassing loss.  With a loud but small home town crowd, DC United used speed and an unconventional line-up (for them) to tear apart one of the best defenses in the league and firmly insert themselves back into the hunt for a top three spot in the Eastern Conference with a 4-2 win. DC United ... Read more

DC Inching Closer to New Stadium and Funding

www.innercirclesports.com Longtime MLS watchers and DC sports fans know that every year a hot rumor about DC United’s stadium situation begins to make the rounds, only for that rumor to fall apart and the team move ever closer to leaving the nation’s capital.  Last year, it was Upper Marlboro and the University of Maryland that seemingly were landing places for DC’s stadium, with Baltimore lurking in the background to pick up the pieces.  And who can forget the ill-fated stadium in Poplar Point that never came about.  At this point, it is reasonable to be skeptical about any reported progress ... Streaks Continue for Two MLS Teams on Wednesday Night

There were only two Wednesday MLS games this week and they seemingly had little in common.  The results, however, were all about streaks that were on the line in the games.  Both streaks are amazing in their own way and both are continuing at least through the weekend. The early game saw the Montreal Impact earn their first MLS road point as they held DC United to a 1-1 draw at RFK.  While the point was a cause of celebration for Montreal, it was a source of discomfort for the home team.  DC United has now gone 87 games without ... Everton Wraps Up U.S. Tour With 3-1 Win Over DC United

EPL fans showed up for the DC United v. Everton friendly Everton finished its U.S. preseason tour tonight with a definitive 3-1 win over DC United on a very hot night in front of almost 13,000 fans.  Those in attendance (about half of whom were Everton faithfuls) got to see some of the EPL team’s biggest names on the pitch, including Phil Neville, Leighton Baines, and Tim Cahill.  Both teams were coming off disappointing and draining losses on Wednesday, the Toffees to Philadelphia and DC United to New England. The big story coming into the match was the absence of ... Read more

Bob, Robert, and Omar: The Week in Review May 9-13, 2011

After a midweek tease, the MLS slate is full this weekend with all but two teams playing on Saturday.  For those looking forward to a little Friday night soccer, there will be none so you’ll just have to wait for Saturday night’s glamorous TV lineup, which includes the renewal of the U.S. leg of the Cascadia Cup rivalry. Now for the other stories catching our attention this week: Marcos Mondaini received a four game suspension and a $1,500 fine for his aggressive tackle on Real Salt Lake’s Javier Morales.  The suspension is much less than Brian Mullan’s, but the league ... How Legit are the Columbus Crew?

Photo by Greg Hickman On March 19, the Columbus Crew dejectedly walked out of RFK Stadium in Washington on the wrong side of a 3-1 game.  The team allowed two Charlie Davies goals (one a penalty kick) and looked outclassed, out played, and in for a long season.  The result came after they were shown the door from the CONCACAF Champions League by losing 4-1 to Real Salt Lake.  After an offseason where the team jettisoned many of its bigger named players to make room in the salary cap and committed to a rebuilding effort, the team looked destined for ... DC United Lines Up Quality Friendlies

Photo by Mikey loves Barcelona I will be the first to admit that my proximity to RFK Stadium may color my biases a little bit.  But after seeing DC United’s press release on their latest friendly, I have to be impressed with this club.  Despite playing in less than stellar facilities and finishing last in MLS last season, the club continues to line up some of the biggest name clubs in the world for friendlies. Yesterday the club announced that it will host the EPL’s Everton on July 23 at RFK.  Everton, for those not fans of the English game, ... Read more
