What Your Team Needs to do to Win MLS Cup 2012

Tonight the road to MLS Cup 2012 begins with Chicago hosting Houston in the Eastern Conference 4/5 game.  Over the next month ten teams will battle to determine who is the best team in MLS this season (at least, the best playoff team) and based on the regular season all of these games are must-see TV.  While match-ups do matter in the playoffs almost as much as talent – playing the right team at the right time really helps – every one of the following teams has a goal they need to achieve to advance to the trophy.  If your ... DC United Swaps Dax McCarty for Dwayne DeRosario

Photo by Sam Teigen Earlier this month DC United let midfielder Fred leave for Australia as a free transfer, signaling to the league that they would be in the market for a creative, play-making midfielder.  Today they got their man.  In a shocking move, DC sent midfielder and former captain Dax McCarty to New York for five-time All Star Dwayne De Rosario.  Straight up. Weirdly enough this is the second time both players have been traded this season.  McCarty was acquired for DC in the offseason during the Expansion Draft in a trade widely hailed as a steal for DC. ... Crew Stun RSL To Move Into Top Three

The Columbus Crew have a knack for late game heroics recently.  This past weekend it was Rich Blachan grabbing a goal late in stoppage time to salvage a tie with the Red Bulls.  Last night it was a furious second half rally full of controversy that saw home fans booing the game-tying goal and Will Hesmer playing the hero late in stoppage time.  The 2-1 win by the Crew moves them into third in the Eastern Conference, while the loss casts doubt on Real Salt Lake’s place in the MLS Cup race. This was the first match between the two ... Read more

Knock Knock It’s FIFA: Week in Review May 23-27, 2011

Photo by FIFA Habbo It was an incredibly busy week in American soccer.  Between the US national team, MLS midweek matches, and all sorts of FIFA controversies, there was a wealth of story lines for fans of the beautiful game.  Below are some of the ones we were following this week that we did not have time to post on the site: In midweek MLS action, New York and Colorado played to a 2-2 draw, Dallas got three points on the road with a 1-0 win over Seattle, and the Galaxy grabbed an early goal to edge Houston 1-0. The ... Read more

The Week in Review: April 25-29, 2011

Photo by nicksarebi Quite possibly this has been one of the darkest weeks in MLS in a long time.  David Ferreira is gone for a while, Steve Zakuani’s situation is even worse, the league handed out the longest suspension in its history, Seattle is suffering even more with O’Brian White’s surgery, and RSL suffered a gut-punch defeat.  All of this overshadowed a good weekend of action and threatens to overshadow what is a good slate of games this weekend. Fortunately not all is dark and gloomy in American soccer; here are some of the more up-beat stories not covered this ... Read more

Week in Review April 11 – 15, 2011

Because of the number of games played during the week, this weekend’s schedule is evenly distributed between Saturday and Sunday.  The Saturday evening spotlight match is DC United visiting BMO Field and Toronto FC, as seen on Fox Soccer Channel.  The Sunday game on Telefutura is Chicago hosting the Beckham- and Donovan-less Los Angeles Galaxy.  Although there isn’t that BIG match this weekend (that was Wednesday’s lineup) there are some intriguing match-ups that will make for some good matches. Now for what else happened this week: The Washington Post broke the story that the New York Red Bulls have been ... Read more

MLS Week Three Open Thread

Will New England be in the top three of the Eastern Conference with a win over visiting Portland? Is Houston a playoff contender and can they trouble the Red Bulls at home? Once again, for those without Direct Kick, share your thoughts on your favorite team’s match.  Who played well, who ... Read more

Week in Review, March 21-25 2011

Photo by compscigrad After the shine of the first weekend has worn off, MLS gets into the grind with some of its biggest names missing for international duty.  Some teams have a second chance to show they’ve improved, while some have another chance to prove they aren’t bottom feeders.  Make sure you vote in our poll below for your most interesting match of the week: Congrats to RSL coach Jason Kreis.  The team announced that in addition to retiring his number 9 this summer it has extended his contract through the 2013 season.  Kreis is the youngest MLS head coach ...
