Olsen’s Tactics Carry the Day: DCU 3, Montreal 0

Tonight’s DC United and Montreal game saw an occurrence that is become more common in MLS – both teams coached by two long-time MLS players. For the home team, that coach is legendary player Ben Olsen, who as a player was known for his passion, his on-the-field smarts, and his desire for the game. Everyone knew that Olsen would make DC a more physical team that evoked past championship sides. But well into his second year as DCU head coach, he has also become one of the best tacticians in MLS. Tonight’s game was an intriguing match-up, as DC came ... Read more

New Coaches and Same Results for MLS Teams

For Toronto and Philadelphia, the “international break” was an opportunity for renewal and revival.  Both teams had miserable starts to the season but both still were in shouting distance of fifth place in the Eastern Conference.  For the Union, the Nowak era was loudly coming to an end as popular players were slowly being shipped off as the head coach kept trying to remake the team in his image (see Earl’s analysis here).  Toronto’s woes were even more embarrassing: a year after beginning the implementation of the Total Football style Canadian edition, the Reds set a record for most losses to ... DC Inching Closer to New Stadium and Funding

www.innercirclesports.com Longtime MLS watchers and DC sports fans know that every year a hot rumor about DC United’s stadium situation begins to make the rounds, only for that rumor to fall apart and the team move ever closer to leaving the nation’s capital.  Last year, it was Upper Marlboro and the University of Maryland that seemingly were landing places for DC’s stadium, with Baltimore lurking in the background to pick up the pieces.  And who can forget the ill-fated stadium in Poplar Point that never came about.  At this point, it is reasonable to be skeptical about any reported progress ... DC United Moves Into First With 3-2 Win Over Revs

For at least the next three weeks, a new team will be sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference, as DC United took down the New England Revolution 3-2 tonight at RFK Stadium.  The win moves DC a point ahead of New York and, with MLS taking a break until June 16, DC fans will have the chance to enjoy reading the standings for the time being. The game started well for the home team as they dictated the pace of the game and took advantage of their opportunities.  DC clamped down on New England in the midfield in ... Read more

DC United Holds Seattle to a Scoreless Draw

Over 15,000 vocal fans packed RFK Stadium yesterday to see an inter-coastal rivalry renewed for the only time this year, and both sets of supporters walked away satisfied as on the pitch the two teams battled to a 0-0 draw.  Despite the lack of scoring, the game was an up-tempo one that either team could have taken all three points but lacked the finishing touch to do so.  The best chance of all may have been from a former DCU player, who missed the opportunity to take a little revenge on his previous team. The first half saw both teams threaten but ... Read more

DC United Notches First Win, 4-1 Over Dallas

The atmosphere was charged in historic RFK Stadium as two teams on opposite sides of the standings faced off in front of a national TV audience.  DC United was winless in their first three matches and had scored one goal; the Black and Red were looking for an elusive home win to set their season straight.  FC Dallas saw an up-and-down start to their season but with Brek Shea returning from international duty, the team looked to steal at least a point from the night and keep up with the leaders in the West. The stadium and fans were electric ... Read more
