Analyzing The MLS Playoff Race In Detail

There’s about a month to go in the MLS season, which will wrap up at the end of October. That means playoff races are reaching their apex, as the field is set for the November tournament that is the best of what the league has to offer. MLS doesn’t have promotion and relegation – and no, it’s almost certainly not happening in your lifetime – the playoffs function as the alternative drama to the race against the drop. Some would say it’s better drama. David Villa marveled at the playoff system, saying at the MLS NEXT launch in New York ... Read more

MLS ’13 – The End of the Western Conference’s Dominance

For the past three years, the gulf between the two MLS conferences has seemingly been as deep as the Grand Canyon.  In 2011 and 2012, the East’s representative in MLS Cup was Houston, a convert from the West.  The last time MLS Cup featured an original Eastern Conference team was 2008 when two teams from the East played for the championship (those silly meaningless geography days).  In discussions of the best teams in MLS, the conversation has naturally gravitated from who would come out of the West. The dominance makes sense in a number of ways.  Los Angeles has taken utmost ... Read more

R-E-S-P-E-C-T As NBC’s Pro Soccer Talk noted this weekend, last year home teams’ gained at least one point in 78% of matches last season, making this weekend’s upsets unusual to say ... Read more

MLS ’12 Preview – Colorado Rapids

Team: Colorado Rapids Coach: Oscar Pareja Last Season: 12-9-13, 5th West, 6th Overall Twitter Hashtag: #Rapids From MLS champions to gutted in the past season, the Colorado Rapids enter the season wondering “what if”.  A new front office and new coach will try to repeat the incredible playoff run of two years ago with an older and more injury-prone group of players and a philosophy seeking to play more up-tempo. But what a group of players they are.  When healthy, the Colorado starting XI could conceivably match up with any team in MLS.  How these players handle a new philosophy will go a long ... Read more

Why the New Format Will Save the US Open Cup

The U.S. Soccer Federation yesterday announced an expanded Open Cup format and schedule, one that will incorporate all MLS and lower division teams in a newly and hopefully more condensed way.  In essence, the changes allow the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to mirror the English FA Cup, where lower division and semi-pro teams have a chance to play against the top level of the country’s soccer hierarchy. The Open Cup in 2012 will expand from 40 to 64 teams, which means all 16 U.S. MLS teams, 10 USL Pro, and 6 NASL teams will be included in the tournament. ... Read more

Navigating the Rapids: Three Questions for Colorado

Defending champions in all sports have had down subsequent seasons, but few have imploded quite like Colorado.  Despite qualifying for the playoffs, the Rapids’ season was a roller coaster.  Struggling with injuries and added games the entire season, the team constantly rotated players and tried to field a healthy eleven, ending the season with third-string players trying to stave off elimination.  In the interim, their head coach and management held a power struggle over who controlled the purse strings and player movements, with the ultimate symbol of the weirdness being the head coach staying behind during a CONCACAF Champions League ... Cunningham Milestone Goal Highlights Intense Night of MLS Action

MLS fans were treated to four games last night instead of the usual one or two, as the schedule makers begin to crowd in a few more league games in anticipation of international friendlies and late-season CONCACAF Champions League matches.  In a cool twist, all four had some playoff implications as the results had a definite impact on positioning for the playoffs and may prove critical down the stretch (although with ten teams making the playoffs that is an easy statement to make). For those watching So You Think You Can Dance or enjoying an evening free of television, here ... Read more
