Adam Armstrong was the hero on the day as his 24th-minute strike was the difference between the two sides, helping the Saints to regain Premier League status at the first time of asking.

Often referred to as the “richest game in football,” winning promotion to the Premier League through the Championship playoffs brings in approximately £140 million to £170 million in additional revenue for the victor.

Saints manager Russel Martin was certainly proud of his players, specially the way they defended off the ball and maintained their shape throughout the 90 minutes, denying Leeds any clear-cut opportunities.

The Saints didn’t create much either, but they were effective in possession throughout the campaign.

Barring Daniel James’ 83rd-minute strike that struck the post, the South Coast club never looked threatened by Leeds, who unusually looked far from their best on the day of reckoning.

Saints ecstatic at victory

Following the game, Martin said passionately at a post-match interview, “”I just feel really grateful. I’ve felt that all week really.

I just feel lots of gratitude about what the players have given us, the staff, the supporters. Yes, I feel immense pride in what we’ve achieved, but I feel grateful to the owners who have given me the opportunity in the first place. Jason [Wilcox], who had a good day himself here yesterday and is no longer there. “

He continued, “But I feel like I wasn’t a sexy appointment for Southampton Football Club coming in and they were brave enough to give me the opportunity and hopefully we have repaid them with a day that they’ll remember forever, and it’s given me one of the best days of my career for sure.”

Martin who came to the club in June 2023, has overseen several players leave the club, but his leadership style has changed fortunes and will now lead his troops out in the highest echelons of English football next campaign.

The Premier League will definitely be a huge step up for the players in the squad and the new owners who took over recently will definitely need to invest in the squad to avoid a straight drop back to the Championship.

Back to drawing board for Leeds

For the Yorkshire-based club though, it will mean another season in the Championship, with the focus shifting to their manager, Daniel Farke, and whether he will be given the boot given the pressure of immediate promotion considering the strong squad he was given. Leeds earned a record 90 points this campaign, however they will bear the unwanted history of becoming the second Championship club to have earned those points yet failed to achieve promotion.

Farke said, “I love to work for such an emotional club, but the shirt can be pretty heavy, because of the expectation.” It however remains to be seen if he will be in charge of Leeds next season and if he does, will be under immense scrutiny to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Phil Foden got the hosts off to a perfect start when he superbly drilled in the opening goal from the edge of the box after only 79 seconds.

The English midfielder showed why he was named the Premier League Player of the Year. He dominated the game and was untouchable in the opening first quarter.

The 23-year-old made it 2-0 for City in the 18^th minute finishing off a fine team move and a pinpoint low drilled cross from Jeremy Doku from the left wing.

Erling Haaland had several glorious opportunities to extend the lead, but the Norwegian striker failed to hit the back of the net on each occasion.

West Ham give Etihad a scare

West Ham were thoroughly outplayed throughout the half, but they halved the deficit from Mohammed Kudus’ stunning overhead kick following a corner in the 42^nd minute. City, however, slammed the door shut just on the stroke of the hour with a fine strike from 18 yards out.

Guardiola’s side saw the game out by dominating possession and their usual verve as they created history. Interestingly, only Sir Alex Ferguson, during his reign from 1993 to 2013, has more Premier League trophies than Guardiola at City.

Arsenal did their part on the day as they clawed back from behind to beat Everton 2-1 with a late goal from Kai Havertz. However, it proved to be a little too late as the Gunners ended two points shy of City in what has been an outstanding season for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Elsewhere on an emotional day at Anfield, on Jurgen Klopp’s farewell day as Liverpool manager, the Reds ran out 2-0 winners against Wolves.

Aston Villa, who were already guaranteed of a fourth placed finish were humbled 5-0 by Crystal Palace thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s sumptuous hattrick. The London side who have been in terrific form of late, finished 10^th with 4 wins in their last 5 league games.

Europa league qualification for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur guaranteed a Europa League spot as they beat already relegated Sheffield United 3-0 away from home. The North London side finished with 66 points, three ahead of Chelsea, who beat Bournemouth 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Should Manchester City beat Manchester United next weekend in the FA Cup final, Chelsea will be playing in the Europa League. That will also guarantee European football for Newcastle United who beat Brentford 4-2 and finished seventh, level on 60 points with Manchester United but having a higher goal difference.

United, however, will have fate in their own hands for Europe next season as they take on City in the FA Cup final. Eric ten Hag’s side finished the league season by beating Brighton 2-0 at the Amex Stadium.

Luton Town joined Burnley and Sheffield United back into the Championship as Nottingham Forest beat Burnley 2-1 at the City ground. Forest finished with 32 points; six clear of 18^th placed Luton.

The result means that the defending Champions are just a point adrift of league leaders Arsenal with a game in hand as we approach the business end of the season.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 12^th minute when Josko Gvardiol won a penalty following a late challenge from Rayan Ait-Nouri in the penalty box. Haaland scored from the spot to get his side on the scoreboard, but there was no looking back.

Manchester City dominate possession

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated possession all over the pitch as Wolves, with their manager Gary O’Neil suspended and looking on from the box.

Ten minutes before halftime, Haaland made it two with a thumping header from Rodri’s lovely, weighted cross from the right wing.

Right on the stroke of half time, it was more misery for the visitors when City won their second penalty on the day.

After a long VAR check, it was deemed that Nelson Semedo had fouled Haaland after the Norwegian was through on goal and was about to shoot from inside the box. The striker stepped up and made no mistake again to make it 3-0 for the hosts before the break.

Wolves got a goal back in the 53^rd minute when Hwang Hee-chan finished from close range and put the ball into an empty net following a poor judgment from Ederson who failed to track the flight of the ball from a cross from the right wing.

Haaland destroys comeback hopes

However, any hopes of a Wolves comeback was completely squashed just seconds later when Haaland scored with a world-class curling effort after bringing the ball down brilliantly from Phil Foden’s cross-field pass.

The 23-year-old almost got his fifth right at the hour mark but Jose Sa made a brilliant stop to tip the ball over the bar following a right-footed effort.

It was Julian Alvarez who made it 5-1 in the 85th minute for City coming on for Haaland to cap off a memorable day for Guardiola’s side.

With three games remaining for City, the defending Champions will feel confident to retain their title with three games left and one in hand, and a point behind Arsenal.

City will take on Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur in two crucial away games in the coming ten days before rounding the season off at home against West Ham. Arsenal, meanwhile, will take on Manchester United next week, a fixture that could decide the fate of the Premier League title.

Earlier on the day, Mikel Arteta’s side beat Bournemouth 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium to go four points clear at the top.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring from the spot right on the stroke of halftime to make it 1-0 for the London side. Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice each scored in the second half to cap off a comfortable 3-0 win while VAR ruled out a Bournemouth goal that will certainly raise eyebrows.

Earlier in the day at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu, the visitors got off to the perfect start when Andreas Christensen rose highest at the far post to head home into an empty net from Raphinha’s corner. Real weren’t behind for long as they won a penalty in the 18th minute when Lucas Vasquez fell over in the box following Pau Cubarsi’s challenge. Vinicius Jr stepped up confidently to restore parity, however there was controversy just minutes later.

Lamine Yamal’s flick from a corner looked to have crossed the line but with the unavailability of goal-line technology, the goal couldn’t be given much to Barcelona’s dismay. VAR intervened to claim that Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made the save before the ball had crossed the line. After the break, Barcelona finally managed to get their noses in front when Lunin’s clearance conceded possession for the hosts and it was Fermin Lopez who scored from close range to give Xavi’s side the lead in the 69th minute.

Barcelona’s joy was short-lived

Barcelona’s joy was short-lived as Real were level just four minutes later. Vinicius Jr put a brilliant whipped cross for Vasquez who slid in to slot home. With the match heading towards a draw, Bellingham was once again the hero in stoppage time, like in October in the reverse fixture. The English midfielder arrived late in the box and after Joselu missed Brahim Diaz’s cross, the 20-year-old smashed home to give his side a huge win once again over their arch-rivals. To make matters worse for Barcelona, Frenkie de Jong left the game on a stretcher shortly before halftime, and it is unknown for how long the Dutch midfielder will be ruled out of action.

The result means that Carlo Ancelotti’s side have had a brilliant week and are now 11 points clear at the top of the La Liga standings with 6 games left and already have one hand on the title. Moreover, the Spanish giants are also in the Champions League semi-final, after being pedestrian throughout the second leg against Manchester City.

Following the loss, Xavi said, “The league that we consider to be the best league in the world does not have goal-line technology! Everyone saw it, the ball went in. Since the beginning of the season in Getafe, I said that I do not like what is happening and that everything is hurting us, and today was the end of this story. Well, I’m proud of the team.”

Goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen was visibly upset as the German said, “I have no words to explain what happened on the goal line. It’s a shame for world football. This world moves a lot of money but not for the important things”.

It seemed that the newly crowned Bundesliga winners would suffer their first defeat of the campaign when Niclas Fullkrug struck in the 81^st minute to give Dortmund the lead but Stanisic’s header prevented the hosts from taking three points in front of their vociferous home faithful.

Keeping the dream of an unbeaten season alive.

After having won the Bundesliga last week and then dispatching off West Ham in the Europa League in midweek to reach the semifinals, Xabi Alonso’s side looked tired throughout the course of 90 minutes.

Leverkusen dominate first half without return

Leverkusen dominated possession in the first half, but the hosts came closest to opening the scoring.

Marcel Sabitzer, who inspired Dortmund to beat Atletico Madrid in midweek and reach the Champions League semi-final, saw his effort saved by Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky.

Nathan Tella should have given his side the leader but Gregor Kobel saved from close range to keep the scores level.

Jeremy Frimpong then wasted a glorious opportunity early in the second half before Alex Grimaldo tested Kobel again with a dipping free kick just round the hour mark.

Alonso’s side showed their impetus as the second half continued but it was Dortmund who took the lead with nine left.

A quick throw in saw Sabitzer’s cross well volleyed in by Fullkrug as the hosts got their noses in front. Leverkusen did look to hit back but failed to create any sort of clear-cut chances after they went behind.

Victor Boniface was sent off for grabbing an opponent by the neck, but VAR intervened to chalk off the red as the Leverkusen player received a yellow for his troubles.

Unbeaten run continues

At the death it was Stanisic who flicked a wonderful header home from Florian Wirtz’s corner to keep his side’s unbeaten run in what has been a fairytale campaign. Leverkusen are now unbeaten in 45 games.

Following the game, Alondo, who was visibly thrilled, said, “We just don’t want to lose. The goal was very emotional, and celebrating with the fans was very nice, it means a lot to all of us”.

Interestingly Dortmund remains the only current Bundesliga team Alonso’s side hasn’t beaten in the Bundesliga having faced each other thrice since the Spaniard took over as manager.

The result means that Dortmund stay in fifth with 57 points, two behind RB Leipzig in fourth. The two sides square off against each other next week in what will be a huge clash for a fourth-placed finish, the last spot for a Champions League berth.

It remains to be seen how manager Edin Terzic keeps his team fresh as they play an in-form Paris St Germain in the semifinals of the Champions League while also pushing to finish as high as possible come at the end of the season.

The hosts, however, will take the result as the Bundesliga is now likely to get five spots in next season’s Champions League.

United cruised to a 3-0 lead at just the hour mark, but Coventry produced a sensational last twenty minutes to score thrice and drag the game to extra time.

The result means that Eric ten Hag’s side will face cross-city rivals and holders Manchester City in the final later next month.

United race to three-goal lead

United started the game better of the two sides and should have taken the lead in the seventh minute but winger Alejandro Garnacho failed to take keep his shot on target with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Marcus Rashford, too, inexplicably shot wide from close range as Coventry looked to settle down in the game. United did get the go-away goal in the 23^rd minute when Scott McTominay scored in the 23^rd minute following Diogo Dalot’s low cross.

Just on the stroke of half time, it was Harry Maguire who made it 2-0 for the Red Devils when the English center-back rose highest from Bruno Fernandes’ wonderful cross.

Coventry struggled to match United’s intensity at the start of the second half as they looked superior all across the pitch. It was 3-0 for United just on the stroke of the hour when Fernandes’ strike took a deflection off Bobby Thomas to beat Bradley Collins in the Coventry goal.

Simms sparks epic comeback

It looked like a comfortable victory for ten Hag’s side till Ellis Simms pulled one back for the Championship side in the 71^st minute. Just eight minutes later, Callum O’Hare’s strike took a deflection off Aaron Wan-Bissaka to hit the back of the net with Andre Onana rooted to the spot in the United goal.

Coventry pulled off the miraculous comeback as they were awarded a penalty right at the death when Luis Bink’s strike struck Wan-Bissaka’s arm. Haji Wright calmly placed his pot kick past Onana as the game dragged on to extra time.

Mark Robins’ side were definitely buoyed by the terrific comeback and rode their luck when Fernandes’ strike cannoned off the post in the 93^rd minute.

Ellis Simms then struck the post with just three minutes left as United looked tired and weary as the game progressed.

Coventry thought they had won the game in the final minute of extra time when Victor Torp poked in Haji Wright’s cross but VAR intervened to chalk the goal off as Wright was adjusted to be offside by the slightest of margins in the buildup.

United started the penalty shootout terribly when Casemiro missed the opening spot kick but Ben Sheaf and Callum O’Hare both missed as Rasmus Hojlund scored the winning penalty to take his side to the final.

Robins’ side would be proud of their fairytale FA Cup run and hardly deserved to lose given their display over the course of 120 minutes.

Harry Maguire later said after the game, “We started the game really well,” he says, “Really professional… The penalty was so harsh, but all credit to Coventry.”

The result means that Arsenal lead the standings over Liverpool on goal difference, while reigning Champions Manchester City are just one point behind with seven games left.

In what was a fast start from both sides, the hosts had the ball in the back of the net after just over a minute when Alejandro Garnacho rounded Caoimhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal.

However, it was ruled out as the Argentine winger had strayed offside by a few yards making his initial run. Just seconds later, Andre Onana made a brilliant stop to deny Dominik Szoboszlai with the Hungarian placing his shot from inside the box.

Liverpool spurs golden chances

Both Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez had two brilliant opportunities to open the scoring as Liverpool dominated proceedings, taking advantage of a sloppy United midfield. The visitors finally drew first blood in the 23^rd minute when Luis Diaz acrobatically scored from Nunez’s header from the near post.

It was nothing short of what Jurgen Klopp’s deserved and the German manager would surely be furious with his team not having scored two or more as United were outplayed in every blade of the grass.

United restored parity just six minutes after the restart when Jarrel Quansah gave the ball away following a howler. Bruno Fernandes latched on to the loose ball and the Portuguese lobbed Kelleher from long distance with the Liverpool custodian caught in no man’s land.

United did improve in the following stages and took the lead on the day fifteen minutes later. After Casemiro cleared the ball in midfield, Aaron Wan-Bissaka played it to Kobbie Mainoo as the latter spun away to lose his marker and leash an unstoppable right-footed curler into the back of the net.

Eric ten Hag’s side definitely looked comfortable after taking the lead as they restricted Liverpool from getting any clear-cut opportunities in the final third.

Penalty restores parity

However, Wan-Bissaka slid in on Harvey Elliot catching the Liverpool man in the box to give away a penalty, from which Mohamed Salah restored parity.

Neither side could press on for a win as the visitors missed the chance to go to the top of the table.

Liverpool will now focus on Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Atalanta hosting Crystal Palace at home next weekend. United meanwhile will travel to Bournemouth in their next fixture.

Following the game, Klopp said, “We should have won the game, that is clear. We should have had other goals in the first half already. No shots in the first half and 1-0 is the lowest we could expect. Really well done from Bruno.

Then the stadium is coming and we needed a few minutes to settle again and they scored another screamer. We had big chances before and after they scored.

As far as I’m concerned, we have a point more than we did before. They put an extra shift in, that’s how it is. We will face that again against Everton. Fully deserved equaliser.”

“I’m not angry at all with the boys but in the game I’m not just going to let things happen. We dropped too deep. There were plenty of situations where we could have defended the ball. You need to be proactive. We play now at home against Atalanta, a difficult game but at home and then another. We don’t have many home games left. The team who wins the league in the end should deserve it. We are in the race and I’m absolutely fine with it.”

The result means that Jurgen Klopp’s side hold a three-point lead over City and are two above Arsenal with nine games of the season remaining.

In a quiet start at the Etihad as Arsenal came into the game with a clear plan. They would be defensively compact and look to play on the counter using the wingbacks as outlets.

Ake squanders first real chance

The first real chance of the game fell to Nathan Ake who mistimed his header from close range as Arsenal keeper David Raya held on.

The Dutch defender had to be replaced inside the first half an hour as he was unable to continue, fresh from international duty.

City dominated possession with their wide range of passing but uncharacteristically failed to garner any clear-cut openings. Both the visitors’ centre-backs, Gabrial and William Saliba, had brilliant outings, keeping Erling Haaland quiet.

Pep Guardiola had opted for Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, and Mateo Kovacic in the middle of the park to keep the ball.

Despite having the lion’s share of possession, City were slow, hardly playing any penetrating balls up front, with most of the action happening on the wings.

Josko Gvardiol was a bright outlet on the left wing while Ben White had a superb outing. Gabriel Jesus got into a great goalscoring opportunity in the latter stages of the first half but dragged his shot wide that had City keeper Stefan Ortega scampering.

More of same in second half

City came very close to opening the scoring just two minutes after the restart. Kovacic opened his body to curl an effort from outside the box, but his shot just evaded Raya in goal and wide off the right post.

Haaland came close in the dying stages of the game but the City striker failed to get his foot on a flicked header at the far post, which summed up the game, a chance that the Norweigian would have scored on any other day.

Guardiola will certainly be disappointed by the way his side’s intent given what was at stake and their inability to get past a dodged Arsenal performance might cost them the title.

Mikel Arteta, on the other hand, would be happier of the two managers as they snatched a point and kept City goalless, City’s first since their 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace back in October 2021.

After the game, Guardiola claimed Liverpool are now the clear favorites, saying, “Arsenal are the second favorites, we are the third. Whoever is top is the favourite. It was in our hands. Now it’s not.”

While Arsenal host Luton Town next, City square up against Aston Villa in midweek. Liverpool, meanwhile, host Sheffield United before traveling to Manchester United next weekend in what will be a mouthwatering clash, given United dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup just weeks ago in a thrilling encounter.

Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute with a fine shot in the bottom corner. Mats Hummels then dragged his shot just wide, missing the opportunity to give his side a 2-0 lead. Having fallen behind, Bayern did everything possible to get back in the game by dominating possession and looking to garner goal-scoring opportunities.

Harry Kane missed a glorious opportunity in the 23rd minute at the far post but the English striker inexplicably flicked his header wide from just six yards out. Eric Dier then had his effort saved right off the line as Dortmund went into the halftime whistle with their noses in front. 

Dortmund down Bayern in convincing style

Dortmund started confidently after the break and had two decent chances to extend their lead. First Mattias De Light slid in to present Adeyemi his second goal of the day and a minute later, Sven Ulreich made a stunning save to deny Felix Nmecha’s effort from inside the box. Tuchel made three attacking changes at the hour mark bringing on Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, and Mathys Tel. That certainly helped Bayern become more aggressive and stretched Dortmund on the wings. With seven minutes left, Dortmund finally doubled their lead after a period of constant Bayern pressure, as Julian Ryerson scored with a wonderful effort.  

Bayern did have the ball in the back of the net in the 89th minute as Kane headed in, but VAR intervened to chalk the goal off.

A frustrating night for the defending Champions finally came to an end as Dortmund won their first game at the Allianz Arena in almost 10 years, their last being in April 2014. The visitors, courtesy of the win, strengthened their hold in 4th place with 53 points, 3 ahead of RB Leipzig for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Tuchel admits the title race is over

Following the game, Tuchel conceded the Bundesliga title saying, “Congratulations to Leverkusen. After the game today there’s nothing left to say”. The manager who is set to leave his position in the summer admitted that the hopes of retaining the title are over. The German can now hope his side go all the way in the UEFA Champions League. A quarter-final matchup against Arsenal is due in the coming weeks.

This caps off a fine week for Leverkusen as manager Xabi Alonso committed his future to the club till 2025 and earlier on Saturday his side scored twice in the final minutes of the game against Hoffenheim to grab yet another three points. The league leaders were heading towards a first defeat when Maximilian Beier scored in the 33rd minute. However, Robert Andrich scored the equalizer in the 88th minute before Patrick Schick grabbed the winner in the first minute of stoppage time to keep Leverkusen’s brilliant run of form intact.

The result means that Arsenal top the Premier League standings on goal difference, and only a point separates the three teams going into the business end of the season.

In front of a vociferous Anfield, it was Pep Guardiola’s side who started on the front foot.

Man City have best of first half

Kevin De Bruyne just hit his dinked cross a little too hard for the onrushing Phil Foden in the fourth minute before Caoimhin Kelleher kept out the Belgian just minutes later.

The hosts did well to settle into the game past the opening stages and stroked the ball around with aplomb and had a goal disallowed due to offside inside the opening twenty minutes.

John Stones opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, steering off De Bruyne’s corner at the near post. It very well looked like a well-worked set piece from Pep Guardiola’s side straight from the training ground.

After conceding, Liverpool did come out of their shell as they dominated possession, buoyed by the home faithful.

Luis Diaz had a tremendous half causing the City backline all sorts of problems.

The traveling side almost scored their second on the stroke of halftime, but Kyle Walker, having brilliantly run the full length of the pitch, hit his cross a bit too hard before De Bruyne could slide into the empty net at the far post.

Liverpool come back hard in second half

Following the restart, it was all Liverpool. The Reds won a penalty when Ederson took out Darwin Nunez following Nathan Ake’s poor back pass in the 47^th minute.

With the City goalkeeper receiving treatment, Alexis MacAllister made no mistake, restoring parity after a brief delay. The Brazilian was unable to continue and was subbed off minutes later as Stefan Ortega took his position under the sticks.

Jurgen Klopp’s side outplayed City all over the pitch and should have taken the lead in the 72^nd minute.

Andrew Robertson delivered a stunning in-swinging ball from the left corner, but Nunez could only hit it towards Ortega as City survived.

Just seconds later, as Phil Foden aimed to get on the cross of Ake’s brilliant ball, Kelleher came rushing to parry the ball away, but it struck the City attacker to come back off the post.

City substitute Jeremy Doku struck the post with a low drive in the 89th minute before Cody Gakpo just minutes later in stoppage time spurned a glorious opportunity to snatch the game for the Reds.

The match ended in a frenzy as Doku appeared to have kicked MacAliister’s chest in the penalty box but both referee Michael Oliver and VAR waved away claims of a spot kick to the hosts.

At the final whistle, both managers embraced themselves in what has been a riveting rivalry between the modern-day greats.

The result sees City trail by Liverpool by just a point with ten games left. Post the International break, Guardiola’s side take on table toppers Arsenal at home as Liverpool switch focus to Brighton next at home in the Premier League.

Sterling has goal ruled out

Raheem Sterling did have the ball in the back of the net in the 32nd minute but VAR agreed with the on-field line official who flagged Nicolas Jackson offside in the buildup.

Eight minutes later, Cody Gakpo hit the post from a wonderful Andy Robertson cross as both sides went into the half-time whistle, deadlocked.

Klopp fielded several untested youngsters including three teenagers who were on the pitch till in the final whistle, and the result surely counts as one of the German’s landmark achievements in this illustrious reign of the Anfield outfit.

Liverpool were the better of the two sides after the restart and the Reds thought they had gone ahead when Van Dijk scored with a brilliant header following a free kick.

However, VAR intervened to chalk the goal off as Wataru Endo came back from an offside position to block Levi Colwill, the latter who would have been able to challenge Van Dijk for the ball.

As Liverpool looked tired with heavy legs in the last fifteen minutes, Chelsea had several chances to get the go-ahead goal. Fits Connor Gallagher was denied one-on-one by Kelleher before Christopher Nkunku’s close-range effort was brilliantly blocked by Ibrahim Konate. The Chelsea striker had yet another opportunity following a rebound but failed to direct his shot on goal as Liverpool survived to take the game to extra time.

Klopp forced to use academy from bench

Klopp made several changes to bring on several academy graduates as Chelsea shockingly looked lethargic in extra time.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were certainly the more experienced but they hardly looked to take the game to Liverpool.

Dorde Petrovic then made a fine save to deny Elliot’s downward head but three minutes he had no chance as Van Dijk rose highest to expertly flick his header in the far corner to give Liverpool a memorable win.

The Liverpool captain later said, “It means so much. All the young boys on the pitch in extra-time, it’s incredible, I’m so proud of the team. It was an intense game, for both sides. It’s amazing: first trophy as Liverpool captain. It’s all for the fans, so let’s enjoy it.

We never take these things for granted. We’re very blessed. We could have lost today we didn’t – we did the job. I’m so proud to be part of this club, and especially proud of the boys.”

Brahim Diaz gave the hosts the opening goal in the first half, and it looked like it would be enough to secure three points for the league leaders, but Llorente’s header meant Diego Simeone’s side will travel back home with a point from a feisty encounter.

The hosts came into the encounter on the back of six consecutive wins in the league, while Atletico, to their credit, hadn’t been on the wrong side of the scoreline in their last eight meetings against Madrid opposition.

Real started the better of the two sides testing Jan Oblak in goal inside the first five minutes. Much against the run of play, Antoine Griezmann played in Alvaro Morata but the latter saw his effort well saved by Andriy Lunin in the Real goal.

Real take the lead

Twenty minutes in and the hosts were ahead, despite Atletico’s repeated calls for offside. Brahim Diaz started a move to find Jude Bellingham who played in Lucas Vazquez, but the latter’s effort was well prodded out by Koke.

However, the ball fell kindly for Diaz who slotted in past Oblak to give his side the lead on the day as VAR withheld the on-field goal decision.

Three minutes later, Lunin made a terrific save to deny Axel Witsel from equalizing from a header that was destined for the right top corner.

Just seconds later Stefan Savic failed to score from close range as Real survived. From then on, Real took the initiative and created several opportunities to extend their lead but failed to come with the killer ball in the final third.

Atletico have a goal disallowed using VAR

Three minutes into the second half, Savic scored with his head, in a similar fashion build-up from the first half from Griezmann’s cross.

However, VAR intervened to rule the goal out with Saul being in front of Lunin in the build up the goal. VAR was called into action twice in the next six minutes later for two penalty appeals from Real. However, it stuck with the on-field decision on both occasions as it was still 1-0 to the hosts.

Real should have extended their lead in the 67^th minute when Oblak parried Rodrygo’s initial shot, but Federico Valverde failed to knock home the rebound as Atletico survived.

Lunin then once again, made a superb save to deny Griezmann one-on-one as it looked like Carlo Ancelotti’s side will scrape a 1-0 win. However, it was not to be as the Rojiblancos finally restored parity in the 92^nd minute.

After Savic’s long ball was headed in the air by Memphis Depay, it was Llorente who rose highest to head past Nacho with a beautiful looping header to give his side a point.

The result meant Real still lead the league standings with 58 points from 23 games and will now prepare to host Girona in a top-of-the-table clash next weekend, who are just two points behind. Atletico, meanwhile, stay fourth, ten points adrift of their derby rivals.

Bukayo Saka gave the hosts an early lead in the 14^th minute before the visitors rode their luck to equalize just on the stroke of halftime.

In an evenly contested second half, a mix-up between Virgil Van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson gifted the Gunners their second when Gabriel Martinelli slotted home into an empty net.

Ibrahim Konate was sent off in the 88^th minute before substitute Leandro Trossard sealed the victory for Mikel Arteta’s side a couple of minutes into added on time.

Liverpool struggle despite recent form

Liverpool came into this encounter having lost just twice in their last 34 Premier League games as manager Jurgen Klopp made three changes from the side that thrashed Chelsea 4-1 in midweek.

Darwin Nunez started on the bench due to an injury concern, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Conor Bradley missed out.

This meant that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch all started for the visitors in North London. For Arsenal, Gabriel Jesus was ruled out through injury as Kai Havertz came into the starting lineup.

Arsenal started the better of the two sides and should have been ahead in the 11^th minute. After a quick counterattack, Martinelli outpaced Konate on the left wing to deliver an inch-perfect cross for Saka, but the English winger headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Three minutes later, Arsenal opened up the Liverpool defense when Martin Odegaard found Havertz with a through ball but the latter saw his shot saved by Alisson. The rebound fell kindly to Saka who fired into the net to give his side the lead.

Dominant Gunners deserved win

The Gunners were dominant in the first half with quick transitions, not allowing Liverpool to set into their rhythm, and were unlucky to head into the tunnel with the scores level.

As William Saliba intercepted Gravenberch’s flighted pass, Luis Diaz managed to poke the ball that took a deflection off Gabriel’s foot to slide into the net to restore parity.

In an evenly contested second half, Arsenal had a penalty claim waved off in the 63^rd minute by referee Anthony Taylor with VAR sticking to the on-field decision.

Just minutes later, Alisson came out off his line but failed to clear Gabriel’s harmless long ball as Martinelli slotted into an empty net to restore the Gunners’ lead.

Liverpool did make several changes to get back into the game but hardly garnered any clear-cut opportunities.

Konate was then sent off as he received a second yellow for bringing down substitute Reiss Nelson before Trsossard sealed the game in the second minute of stoppage time.

The Belgian did brilliantly to dart into the left wing before his shot took a deflection off Van Dijk to hit the back of the net going in between Alisson’s legs.

The result means Arsenal now have 49 points from 23 games, two behind Liverpool, while reigning Champions are on 46 with two games in hand.

After a goalless first half, Jurgen Klopp’s side showed their superiority on the pitch as they ran our comfortable winners on the day in front of a packed Vitality Stadium.

Earlier on the day, the hosts started on the front foot, pegging back Liverpool with their relentless work rate, limiting any clear-cut opportunities.

The visitors were without two of their most creative players, Mohamed Salah who is at the AFCON representing Egypt while Trent Alexander-Arnold was also sidelined due to injury.

The hosts had a minor scare when Justin Kluivert caught Luis Diaz’s ankles with a clumsy challenge, but VAR deemed that the tackle wasn’t hard enough to be awarded a dismissal.

Ryan Christie brought out a routine save from Alisson in the 39^th minute and just five minutes later, the Cherries had yet another golden opportunity. Both Kluivert and Christie failed to get on the end of a low cross at the near post in what was a certain goalscoring opportunity.

Liverpool take the lead

The Reds took the lead four minutes after the restart following a sublime move. First Ibrahim Konate found Curtis Jones with a switch in play in the left wing, who then found Jota before the Portuguese laid it off for Nunez for a smart first-time finish from the Uruguayan.

Conor Bradley should have then doubled the lead just minutes later after VAR turned away calls for a penalty. But somehow the young defender headed waywardly with the goal at his mercy at the far post.

Liverpool doubled their lead in the 70^th minute when Jota hit a first-time effort past Neto in the Bournemouth goal and the hosts hardly recovered from then on. Liverpool stroked around the ball with enormous ease that would certainly highlight the Reds’ firepower to lay their hands on the title come in May.

Jota gives Liverpool an unassailable lead

Jota then put the game to bed in the 79^th minute after a rebound fell onto his path as he once again finished with ease in what was a sublime away performance.

Nunez made it 4-0 in the 94^th minute as the Reds returned to Merseyside with three points in their bag.

The result means Klopp’s side has now won their last three away games without conceding and moved five points clear of reigning Champions Manchester City, having played an extra game.

For Bournemouth, the result will come as a massive blow, losing successive games after winning three in a row. The Cherries now host Swansea at home in the FA Cup before traveling to London to take on West Ham early last month.

Liverpool, meanwhile, buoyed by the win will look to keep the momentum going as they play Fulham in the Carabao Cup second-leg semifinal, leading the tie 2-1 before hosting Norwich in the FA next weekend and then resuming Premier League action at home when Chelsea come to town.

Watch FIFA’s World Cup game schedule announcement

During the special program, the schedule for all 104 matches will be announced while also revealing the location of the tournament’s opening matches in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The 2026 World Cup will have 16 iconic venues spread across the three countries.

These are reportedly in Atlanta, Boston, Seattle, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Franciso, Monterey, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, and Guadalajara.

Canada will host the showpiece event for the first time in nearly 40 years. In 2015, they played host to one of the most successful FIFA Women’s World Cup. Mexico, meanwhile, will stage the event for the third time since 1970 and 1986, while for the US it’s their first since 1994. The largely successful event still captivates the minds of lifelong soccer fans who witnessed the magic of Romario and Bebeto who led Brazil to their record fourth title.  

It will be interesting to see how the USMNT does in the showpiece event. They had lost to Brazil in 1994 in the knockout stages in front of their home fans while in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, they bowed out with a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands in the round of 16.

World Cup Final awaits

The host city of the much-awaited final is also eagerly anticipated which is scheduled to be held on July 19, 2026. According to a report, the final will be held at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. The Arlington arena has been reckoned as the overwhelming favorite to host the final for quite some time.

The venue will be hosting several 2024 Copa America matches and has also held CONCACAF Gold Cup and National League matches. Moreover, it hosted the El Classico between Barcelona and Real Madrid last year. Texas will also reportedly be FIFA’s home base for the iconic tournament and has the most populous metro area in the southern United States.

While no doubt it’s a state-of-the-art arena, there have been concerns regarding the playing surface. Despite the Dallas Cowboys playing the NFL on artificial turf, natural grass has been laid down, and issues like players’ cleats sticking and causing injuries remain talking points.

New York’s MetLife Stadium was also in the running for the honor of hosting the final. The good news is, we will find out the answer, for sure, on February 4.

Meanwhile, the report from FIFA also states that ticket information will be available on the governing body’s official site while pre-registrations for hospitality packages are also available.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men came into this highly anticipated encounter as firm favorites as they brushed aside the Blaugrana with ease in what was a one-sided final from start to finish.

Ronald Araujo was then sent off in the 71^st minute in what was a disastrous evening for Xavi’s men.

Real Madrid make dream start

It was a dream start for Real as Vinicius opened the scoring in the 3^rd minute. The Brazilian picked up a fine pass from Jude Bellingham, as he was through on goal, before rounding Inaki Pena in the Barcelona goal to Madrid the lead.

Pena then kept out Rodrygo’s thunderous 20-yard effort just 2 minutes later before Vinicius made it 2-0 in the 10^th minute.

The winger slotted home from close range from Rodrygo’s swift low cross from the right wing as the Barcelona defense couldn’t cope with Madrid’s brilliant start. Pedri almost pulled one back just two minutes later as he looped his half-volley onto the crossbar but Robert Lewandowski couldn’t head the ball home as Andriy Lunin kept out the Polish striker’s effort by tipping it over.

Lewandowski did half the deficit in the 33^rd minute with a sumptuous strike from the edge of the box following a swift Barcelona move. It looked like Barcelona would finally claw their way back into the game.

However, Araujo let the game drift away from the Catalans as he brought down Vinicius in the box with the Brazilian ready to pounce at the far post. The Madrid winger stepped up to make no mistake as the Galacticos went into halftime 3-1 up and Barcelona struggling all over the pitch.

Quieter second half sees Madrid secure the trophy

It was a quieter second half as Xavi made several changes to get back into the game but Barcelona hardly created any clear-cut openings to score. Rodrygo then made it 4-1 in the 64^th minute from inside the box to put the game to bed.

It turned bad to worse for Barcelona as Araujo was given his marching orders for a second yellow for yet another cynical challenge on Vinicius. Neither team created any further opportunities in the last fifteen minutes as Madrid strolled to a memorable win in front of a packed crowd.

The result will come as a huge blow for Barcelona who are having a poor season by their standards. The Catalans are in fourth place in the La Liga standings, eight points behind leaders Girona and seven off real who could very well go on and reclaim their crown. Along with Vinicius, Belingham, and Rodrygo looked at the peak of their powers as Real look to build a memorable campaign.

Ancelotti, on the other hand, will be delighted with his team’s effort as they laid down the marker with a dominating performance. The Galacticos are certainly favorites for the La Liga and will also aim to make a deep run in the Champions League this season.

The hosts took an early lead when Rasmus Hojlund rifled into the roof of the net from inside the box for his second successive league goal at home, the last being the winner against Aston Villa in the memorable 3-2 win in late December.

Marcus Rashford came close just minutes later, but his cushioned volley went wide.

Spurs certainly settled down well after falling behind and almost restored parity in the 11^th minute when Rodrigo Bentancur’s header following a corner was cleared off the line by Diogo Dalot.

Spurs equalise from a corner

The North London side earned several corners before finally scoring from one to restore parity in the 19th minute. From Pedro Porro’s in-swinging corner, Richarlison rose highest to flick his header at the far post.

It was end to end as both sides looked to get the go-ahead goal before halftime. Ange Postecoglou’s side certainly came with a game plan as they pressed all over the pitch while maintaining a high defensive back line to cause problems for United.

Erik ten Hag’s side were almost gifted a second when Destiny Udogie’s header from Rashford’s cross hit the post.

Just seconds later, the Red Devils went ahead when Rashford played a one-two with Hojlund before drilling a low shot into the back of the net for his first goal this season at Old Trafford.

Timo Werner came close for the visitors but dragged his left-footed shot wide of target as United went into halftime with their noses in front.

Spurs equalise right after halftime

However, the joy was short-lived for United as Spurs equalized right after the restart. After Cristian Romero’s delightful long ball opened up the United defense, Werner’s cross from the left was fired in by Bentancur.

The visitors dominated from there on, having the lion’s share of possession. They almost went ahead in the 52^nd minute when Richarlison wasted a golden opportunity as he shot straight to Onana in the United goal.

The visitors had almost three-quarters of possession around the hour mark as Ten Hag’s side looked flat and out of ideas on the pitch. Lisandro Martinez returned for the hosts after a lengthy injury layoff, adding defensive solidity in the back four.

Tottenham were at their creative best as they got in behind the United back four multiple times but failed to garner clear-cut opportunities in the final third throughout the second half.

Scott McTominay had a glorious opportunity to steal the three points right at the death but the hosts will be disappointed with their second-half performance failing to have a shot on goal as the game ended two apiece.

The result means that Tottenham stay in fifth, with 40 points from 21 games, five behind league leaders Liverpool while United are seventh, eight points behind the North London outfit. Ten Hag’s side now focus their attention on the FA Cup fourth-round fixture next weekend while Spurs face Manchester City in almost two weeks.

An own goal from Jacub Kiwior gave Liverpool the lead with ten minutes left before Luis Diaz wrapped up the game with a thumping finish in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The result meant that Arsenal suffered their third straight defeat and a fourth in seven games in all competitions.

The hosts started the better of the two sides as they came out with ferocious intensity, but despite creating several clear-cut opportunities, failed to score.

Arsenal miss host of chances

First, Reiss Nelson spurned a glorious opportunity while being through on goal before Martin Odegaard struck the post just minutes later.

Kai Havertz had a couple of great chances, but the German fluffed on both occasions to let Jugen Klopp’s side off the hook.  

Liverpool did settle down after the slow start, but they were second-best throughout the pitch.

The Reds hardly created any opportunities while the hosts failed to make their dominance count. Trent Alexander-Arnold then came close for the visitors on the stroke of halftime when he rifled his shot against the bar.

The Reds however came out the brighter of the two sides right from the restart. Darwin Nunez flashed just wide of the far post in the 54^th minute before Aaron Ramsdale brilliantly saved Diaz’s low drive in the Arsenal goal.

From the resulting corner, it was Diogo Jota who struck the post with a string header as the Merseyside outfit were relentless on their attack.

Liverpool strike late to secure victory

The visitors took the lead in the 80^th minute when Alexander-Arnold’s cross from the right skimmed off Kiwior’s head, nothing short of what Klopp’s men deserved from their second-half showing.

Arteta made several attacking chances after falling behind but the hosts failed to trouble Alisson in the Liverpool goal. Diaz then sealed the win for Liverpool with effectively the last kick of the game with a brilliant finish as Arsenal were caught trying to look for an equalizer.

The result will come yet another blow for Arsenal, who have scored only five goals in their last seven games and managed one clean sheet in the last nine. Liverpool would be buoyed with the result, getting the job done with key players absent including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Following the victory, Trent Alexander-Arnold said, “We’ve got a lot of players missing today so it’s a huge result. We changed things around at half-time and created a lot of chances after that. In the first half there were times when we were a bit naïve; we got caught playing out from the back and they had their chances from our mistakes.”

“We mixed it up more – we want to get players like Harvey on the ball but also find Darwin and Lucho in behind. Darwin went wider and I think his speed, one on one with their full-back, made a real difference. [On the first goal] You just want to hit an area and make it as difficult as possible for them to clear the ball. We hit the woodwork a couple of times so we had our chances as well, and we put them away at the end of the game.”

The Gunners started the game on the front foot when Bukayo Saka slotted in from close range in the fifth minute of the game but it was Fulham all the way ever since. Marco Silva’s side were better throughout the first half and restored parity in the 29^th minute when Raul Jimenez smashed in from Tom Cairney’s brilliant cross from the left wing.

The hosts then got the get-away goal right on the stroke of the hour when Bobby De Cordova-Reid slotted in from point-blank range following a corner. Andreas Pereira’s free-kick struck the post in the last ten minutes as Arsenal failed to create any clear-cut opportunity that gave Fulham the three points on the day.

Arsenal are gunning for their first EPL title in twenty years, and they simply cannot afford to stumble if they want to capture it. They’re neck-and-neck with Liverpool at the top and chased by Aston Villa who are not far behind as the calendar turns to 2024. Failing to get all three points today could be a big moment in the story of this season.

Fulham vs Arsenal live updates

In what was a cagey affair, Juventus came close to taking the lead when Filip Kostic’s goalbound effort was cleared off the line on the stroke of halftime.

The hosts however did take the lead early in the second half as Rabiot scored with a finely taken effort having been played through on goal by Dusan Vlahovic. Federico Chiesa then had a goal ruled out for offside as neither side created any goalscoring opportunities in the last half an hour as Turin side held on for precious three points.

Forest dominated proceedings right from the start but failed to make their dominance count in the opening half hour. United, meanwhile, looked disjointed and out of ideas, failing to garner any sort of momentum on the pitch. The hosts finally went ahead in the 64^th minute when Nicolas Dominguez scored from inside the box to send the home fans to raptures. It looked like a comfortable evening for Forest but goalkeeper Matt Turner gave away the ball needlessly as Marcus Rashford capitalized on the error to restore parity 14 minutes later.

Forest, however, weren’t to be denied the three points as Morgan Gibbs-White’s sumptuous curling effort eight minutes from time helped them to a famous win.

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United Live

It was the visitors who started the better of the two sides as they took the lead in the 4^th minute. Center-back Gabriel Magalhaes rose highest to direct home a header from Martin Odegaard’s freekick before Mikel Arteta’s side were lucky not to concede a penalty midway in the first half. Replays showed that the ball hit Odegaard’s left hand in the box, but VAR waved away the penalty appeal.

Despite falling behind, Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated proceedings and it was Mohamed Salah who smashed in from inside the box in the 29^th minute to restore parity going into the tunnel.

The hosts continued their superiority in the second half and came close to scoring the second when Joe Gomez just curled wide. It was then Trent Alexander-Arnold who struck the post in the 72^nd minute as Arsenal survived a Liverpool onslaught to grab a vital away point.

Despite United missing a chunk of key players and playing on dismal form, Liverpool could not break down the United defense. Arsenal got back to winning ways with a strong win over Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend. Mikel Arteta’s side can take advantage of its lack of a game midweek to pounce on Liverpool. The Reds swatted aside West Ham in the League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old was sacked by Rangers just a couple of months back having joined the Scottish giants in November 2022. Beale won 31 of his 43 games in charge of Rangers. However, he was dismissed in the beginning of October having lost thrice in the first seven league games of the season.

Beale takes over from the much-loved Tony Mowbray, as the club parted ways with the latter following a 1-1 draw at Millwall. That result has seen the club win only once in five games.

Mowbray did lead Sunderland to the playoff semi-final last season. But tensions between him and the club owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus had grown in the past few months. Thus, it came as no surprise when the 60-year-old vacated the position recently.

Sunderland inks former Rangers Manager Beale

Sunderland did speak to several candidates before appointing Beale. And the club feels that they have made the right decision to appoint him at the helm. Will Still, the 31-year-old manager of Reims was thought to be the favorite to replace Mowbray. However, it is believed that Sunderland reached an impasse with the French club regarding concerns with the compensation.

Mike Dodds, who led the club to wins over West Brom and Leeds United, has been named Beale’s deputy. Meanwhile, Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini will continue their respective coaching roles. The new manager has claimed that it’s an honor to take charge of a ‘historic and unique club’. Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman has already described Beale as a ‘progressive coach’.

He said, “We have monitored Michael’s career for some time and are delighted to have reached an agreement. Michael Beale has an excellent and well-founded reputation for developing young players and is an outstanding progressive coach who is aligned with our playing identity and naturally fits well within our structure.”

“We continue to trust in our established process of identifying the right candidates to take us forward at these junctures and although Michael has had a setback, we feel we are getting him at the right time in his coaching journey and our journey as a club.”

Following his appointment, Beale said, “It’s a huge honor to be joining the Sunderland family and I would like to thank Kyril (Louis-Dreyfus), Kristjaan (Speakman), and the rest of the executive team for the faith and responsibility they have placed in me.”

It will be interesting to see how Beale performs in his new role. Especially in the FA Cup third-round fixture that will be the Wear-Tyne derby next month against Newcastle United.

After Emerson Royal had fouled Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish was through on goal. This could have led to the winner, but Hooper pulled it back for a foul. This killed the reigning champions’ hope to score the winner. Several City players were enraged by the decision. They surrounded the referee and vented their anger, with Haaland prominently shouting at the official.

The FA, today, announced that they will be imposing a fine on City. Specifically, this is due to failing to control their players following the game. The case was heard by an independent panel.

£120,000 fine for Man City after referee incident

A written statement from the FA stated, “Manchester City FC have been fined £120,000 after their players surrounded a match official at the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 3 December. Manchester City FC admitted that they failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper way during the 94th minute. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed this sanction following a hearing.”

City manager Pep Guardiola had also sarcastically hit out at fourth official Anthony Taylor when quizzed whether he had been provided an explanation on the controversial decision. The Spaniard had said, “’No, the master of commander Anthony Taylor knows everything in this business and didn’t tell me anything. When you review the image, the referee whistles after saying play on, and then after pass comes the whistle. This is what I don’t understand.”

A potentially costly mistake

Earlier, PMGOL chief Howard Webb had revealed that Hooper was devastated by the incident. He also confirmed that it was the wrong decision as the referee blew his whistle at the wrong time. Webb said, “He had refereed the game really well for 93 minutes but he knows this is going to be the only talking point really close to the end of the game.”

The former referee added, “I understand the disappointment that Manchester City felt on this one because it would have been a wonderful advantage. He just formed the opinion to blow just at the wrong time.”

“It looked like he was ready to play advantage. You never heard him shout advantage. I asked him about the arm, he said he didn’t even realize he was doing it in the moment. Disappointing for Simon, he would have loved to have played advantage to him there. I said to him afterward, “Just hold your hands up”.

“It’s difficult to be annoyed at a remorseful man, show your disappointment in the moment because he was certainly feeling that at the time. We took the learning from it and hopefully, he’ll not do it again.”

City have been in poor form of late having won just once in their last six league games. The Etihad outfit has fallen off the pace and is in fourth spot, trailing leaders Arsenal by 5 points having played 17 games.

Neymar may miss the 2024 Copa America and all games beforehand with a torn ACL from the Uruguay game. Casemiro remains sidelined, which has led to goals pouring in. Gabriel Jesus and Vinicius are also battling injuries. They will not be present for the game against Argentina.

The defending World Cup champions have not had those same injury problems. Prior to the loss at La Bombonera against Uruguay, Argentina was cruising through qualifying. Four wins from its first four games led to no goals against. At the same time, Argentina comfortably defeated its opposition. A win at Brazil would not only reaffirm its spot at the top of the table. It would deal a blow to its biggest rivals, potentially sinking them into a spot that would not automatically qualify.

The visitors opened the scoring late in the first half when Ronald Araujo netted from close range following poor Argentine defending while Darwin Nunez added a second late on to stun the La Albiceleste. Lionel Messi did strike the crossbar with a wonderful freekick in the second half but that was the closest the reigning World Champions came to get on the score sheet.

Tottenham has been one of the most enjoyable clubs to watch this season with Ange Postecoglou’s progressive style of play. Even playing with nine men, Tottenham held a high line against Chelsea to prevent possession just outside of its box. Of course, Chelsea cashed in with a Nicolas Jackson hat trick. However, the intent was there, and Tottenham fans showed that.

Wolveswill see this game as a major opportunity against a strong team that is going through a tough time. Gary O’Neil knocked off Manchester City not long ago to shake up the top half of the table. He could lead Wolves to do it again as Spurs will be without talisman James Maddison.

The result meant that the Old Lady kept their superb form ongoing and are now just two points behind league leaders Inter Milan.

Fiorentina, though, have now lost two home games in a row and are in a mini-slump in form.

The Old Lady came into the encounter with a clean sheet in each of their last five league games. Fiorentina, meanwhile, after a fine start to the season have lost pace recently.

The Viola lost both of their last two league games without scoring but have been unbeaten in their last four games against Juventus, drawing three and winning once.

Visitors make a bright start

The visitors started the game on the front foot, dominating possession and keeping the hosts at bay with fast interplay between them. It didn’t take long for Massimiliano Allegri’s side to break the deadlock as they went ahead in the 10th minute.

After Adrien Rabiot laid it off for Kostic on the left wing, the latter put an inviting low cross for Fabio Miretti who poked it right-footed to give his side the lead.

Fiorentina didn’t let their heads drop after conceding the early goal and were certainly the better side thereafter.

First, Nicolas Gonzalez curled a left-footed effort to test Wojciech Szczesny in Juventus goal before the Argentine once again brought out a brilliant save from the Polish custodian just minutes later with a driving effort. 

Szczesny then came up with another spectacular save just on the stroke of half-time when he denied Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi from a finely taken free kick. Allegri’s side came under immense pressure from the hosts, who certainly were the better team of the half, but went into the tunnel preserving their thin lead. 

Juventus lead at break

Just six minutes after the restart, Juventus had a huge chance to make it 2-0. After the hosts lost possession in their own defensive half, Moise Kean put Federico Chiesa through, but the former Fiorentina forward saw his left-footed effort saved.

A late offside flag saved his blushes as Fiorentina survived a massive scare. The hosts then came close to getting a penalty, but VAR agreed with the on-field referring decision not to award a spot kick right at the hour mark.

Despite being in the ascendancy for most of the game, Fiorentina lacked the final ball up front and didn’t test Szczesny in the second half.

Vincenzo Italiano would certainly be disappointed with his team’s effort in front of the vociferous home crowd as they ran out on the wrong side of the scoreline on the day.

Juventus won’t mind the victory at all though, despite not in full flow, Allegri’s side picked up three crucial points away from home as they moved to 26 points from 11 games, 2 behind Inter. The Old Lady will look to build on this victory next week when they host Cagliari while Fiorentina will look to bounce back against Bologna.

It looked as if the Hatters would hold on for one of the huge Premier League upsets when substitute Tahith Chong scored in the 80^th minute.

Diaz strike saves point

However, Diaz’s late strike spared the blushes for Jurgen Klopp’s side on the day.

The Reds came into this game as firm favorites looking to keep pace with Manchester City and Tottenham at the top of the table.

Klopp’s men are one of the most in-form sides in the league having lost just once in 21 league games.

Luton, meanwhile, have endured a tough start to the season, having failed to keep a clean sheet in the opening ten games of the season and struggling in the bottom three.

The visitors started the game brightly dominating possession with Trent Alexander-Arnold slotting into central midfield and acting as an extra man. Luton, meanwhile, were happy to sit back, absorb the pressure, and looked to counter on the break.

Darwin Nunez had an early opportunity to give his side the lead, but Thomas Kaminski denied the striker by tipping the effort wide. The Uruguayan striker also struck the post in the 13^th minute from a fine Alexander-Arnold pass as the home fans breathed a sigh of relief.

The hosts also packed the box adding an extra pair of legs when out of possession and did well to restrict Liverpool’s possession out wide.

However, Klopp’s side weren’t creating much to bother the home side in search of a lead. Kaminski also played his part in keeping the scores level with brave goalkeeping making a superb save to deny Diogo Jota as both sides headed goalless into the break.  

Barkley and Kabore put in fine display

Luton certainly didn’t sit back in the second half, rather took the game to Liverpool by being brave in midfield. Ross Barkley and Issa Kabore both had a brilliant game in the middle of the park while the back three were always organized to protect their goal.

The hosts squandered a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 65^th minute. After Chiedozie Ogbene did brilliantly in the right wing to pull it back for Carlton Morris, the latter’s shot was brilliantly blocked by Alisson in the Liverpool goal to keep the scores level.

Just minutes later, Darwin Nunez inexplicably missed an open net from point-blank range in what would have been the miss of the season. However, the linesman’s flag was raised in the far corner to spare the striker’s blushes.

The hosts did eventually score ten minutes from time to send the home crowd to elation. After Barkley drove through midfield and with Kabore sending in a superb low cross, Chong slid home to give his side the lead.

A famous win for the hosts was denied when Diaz scored with a header in the back post from Harvey Elliot’s cross as the game ended 1-1. It was an emotional moment for the Colombian winger who unveiled a shirt saying ‘Libertad Para Papa’  meaning ‘Freedom for dad’ after his father was kidnapped in his home country.

The result would hugely buoy Luton and will look to build on the point when they travel to Manchester United next week. Liverpool, meanwhile, would be disappointed in the way they played and will look to bounce back with a win when they host Brentford.

The English striker has now scored a record 15 times in his first 10 Bundesliga appearances.

This result meant ended Dortmund’s unbeaten run and Bayern moved to within two points of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Much was made about Dortmund’s impressive unbeaten run coming into Der Klassiker, but Bayern’s fast start to the game blew the hosts away.

Thomas Tuchel’s side grabbed the early in the 4^th minute. Dayot Upamecano scored from a free header following Leroy Sane’s brilliant delivery cross.

Kingsley Coman could have made it 2-0 just minutes later but the Frenchman saw his shot fly over the bar.

Dortmund were struggling to get out of their own half. Three minutes later, it was indeed 2-0 as Kane scored his first. After his long-range strike a week ago, he instead benefited from a simple tap in.

Leroy Sane’s square pass after a darting run in midfield by Leon Goretzka gave Kane the chance to score.

Dortmund, who were stunned by the initial onslaught from their opponents, had a great opportunity to half the deficit in the 26^th minute.

Julian Brandt volleyed his effort high from a position where he should have at least hit the target. Kane hit the post in the 32^nd minute but the English striker was deemed offside anyway.

Kane gave Bayern Munich the edge over Borussia Dortmund

Tuchel’s side dominated possession for most of the half and continued offering a counterattacking threat.

Dortmund were simply outplayed all over the pitch, having no answer against their opponents.

Donyell Malen had a glorious opportunity right on the stroke of half-time but the Dutch forward fell while trying to get his shot off.

Bayern had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was ruled out due to offside. It was an even contest from there on as Dortmund improved.

The hosts nearly made it 2-1 when Marco Reus did brilliantly to receive a long ball from Mats Hummels. After playing a quick one-two with Niclas Fullkrug, Manuel Neuer made a splendid save. Seconds later, Gregor Kobel came up with an equally world-class save to deny the brilliant Sane.

Bayern Munich bounced back from cup shock

Bayern had yet another goal ruled out for offside in the 70^th minute when Kane squared it off for Musiala to tap in from close range. The Englishman, however, had strode offside in the buildup. Two minutes later, the 30-year-old did get his second of the night with a beautiful finish.

After receiving Coman’s low cross, the former Tottenham Hotspur captain slotted a fine finish in the left bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Kane finally completed his hattrick in the second minute of stoppage time following a one-on-one against the keeper.

The result will come as a huge blow for Dortmund and the manner in which they capitulated against their fierce rivals will be a cause for concern, despite it seeming to happen on an annual basis.

For Bayern Munich though, they will look to keep their momentum going as they chase down Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen.

The visitors had a goal ruled out early in the game before Fulham dominated the second half. However, Fernandes eased the pressure on Erik ten Hag with a superb winner at the death that gave United the three points.

The big news for United coming into the game was the absence of Marcus Rashford. The English forward had been reprimanded by Ten Hag for celebrating his birthday after the loss to Manchester City. The Dutch coach claimed the striker’s behavior was unacceptable.

However, with an apology offered, the reasoning for Rashford’s absence was an injury picked up in training on Friday.

Rasmus Hojlund led the attack in Rashford’s absence while Fernandes, Scott McTominay, and Christian Eriksen were to pull the strings in midfield.

Fulham, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing start to the season. Marco Silva’s side lost two of their last 3 games and their home form has been of concern of late. Despite this, the Portuguese coach has just signed a contract extension, as was confirmed by the club in October.

Erik ten Hag arrived at Craven Cottage under significant pressure

United started better of the two sides and they thought they had the lead in the 8th minute. From a well-worked free-kick, Eriksen picked out Alejandro Garnacho who then crossed for McTominay and the Scot thumped home from close range.

However, after a lengthy VAR check that took close to four minutes, referee John Brooks chalked off the goal. Harry Maguire was deemed to be in an offside position. The English defender was interfering with play trying to get his toe on the ball before Garnacho’s cross, although he was being pushed towards the ball.

Fulham did grow into the game soon after, despite a protest from their fans at rising ticket prices in the 18th minute.

Despite their newfound comfort, Fulham hardly created any opportunities to break the deadlock before the end of the first half. The game looked pedestrian at times with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball long enough to be truly creative in the final third.

Bruno Fernandes saved United

Garnacho had a half chance soon after the restart, but the Argentinian winger hit his shot straight at Bernd Leno.

The hosts, however, were in the ascendancy from there on. First Harry Wilson darted past the United midfield and played in Willian. The Brazilian shot wide from a good position.

Just past the hour mark, Calvin Bassey’s effort met Diogo Dalot on the line, forcing the Portuguese defender to clear. This was before Andre Onana kept out Rodrigo Muniz’s header following a corner. The Fulham striker, however, was unable to continue and walked off the stadium minutes later in tears. Marco Silva later confirmed it was an issue with his knee.

Silva’s side dominated proceedings throughout the second half. Yet, they will leave disappointed at not having made United pay for their sloppiness.  Both sides made several changes in search of the opening goal but the game lacked any real conviction.

The moment of magic came through Fernandes. He grabbed the winner for United in stoppage time with a well-taken curling shot.

Facundo Pellistri’s dilligent work on the right flank put pressure on Fulham’s defense. A fortuitous bounce fell to the Portuguese midfielder, and he showed great composure to create space with a feint before placing his shot into the bottom corner.

What next for Fulham and Manchester United?

Fulham will be hugely upset with the outcome, but the result will come as a huge boost for Ten Hag. Despite yet again struggling to find attacking cohesion, the Reds travel back to Manchester with three points.

The Red Devils now shift their focus to the Champions League as they travel to Denmark to take on Copenhagen. This comes before hosting newly promoted Luton Town next weekend. Fulham, meanwhile, face a tricky away test against high-flying Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Olivier Giroud netted a brace in the opening 31 minutes to put Milan in the driving seat but the hosts refused to give in and scored twice in 12 minutes in the second half to earn a point in front of the vociferous home faithful.

Rudi Garcia’s side finished with ten men when defender Natan was given his marching orders late in the game.

The defending Champions came into this encounter missing their influential striker Victor Osimhen through a hamstring injury while Juan Jesus also missed out in the heart of the defense.

Giacomo Raspadori started up front for the hosts while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Matteo Politano pulled the strings out wide. For Milan, Giroud led the line while Christian Pulisic and Rafa Leao were the main men out wide.

Giroud makes rapid start

Giroud had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the second minute, but his volley was brilliantly blocked by Aamir Rrahmani. Milan were dealt an early blow in the 19^th minute when Pierre Kalulu was forced off due to injury with Marco Pellegrino taking his place on the field.

However, the visitors went ahead just seconds later when Giroud glanced home from an inch-perfect left-footed cross from Pulisic to silence the home crowd.

Eight minutes later, Politano should have restored parity but the Italian inexplicably hit the side netting with the goal at his mercy.

Milan took full advantage of the shocking miss as Giroud once again was in the right place in the penalty box to head home Davide Calabria’s cross from the right wing.

Napoli looked out of sorts and were lucky not to have fallen three behind going to halftime. Theo Hernandez pulled it back for Tijjani Reijnders after being played in by Leao, but the midfielder failed to keep his shot on target.

Napoli start epic comeback

Garcia made several substitutions right at half time and Napoli seemed inspired after the resumption. The Partenopei came out firing all cylinders and played with intent as they looked to mount a comeback.

Politano halved the deficit with a stunning solo effort in the 50^th minute as he hammered his shot past Mike Maignan in the Milan goal to restore hope for the home side.

It was all Napoli, thereafter, and should have been level at the hour mark. As Maignan missed a routine catch, Kvaratskhelia, who was having a fine game, somehow scuffed his effort over the bar from just six yards out.

Raspadori made it 2-2 in the 63^rd minute with a stunning freekick from 20 yards out and it looked like Napoli would go on and snatch a victory.

However, Milan, to their credit, slowed the game down making vital changes from the bench as Napoli too ran out of steam late in the game.

The hosts were then reduced to ten men when Natan received his second yellow as he caught Luka Romero with a late tackle. Milan could have snatched victory right at the end but Calabria put his header just wide from close range.

The result means Napoli stay on fourth with 18 points from 10 games, seven behind league leaders Inter while Milan also stay in third with 22 points.

The result sees Pep Guardiola’s side move to third in the table, two behind league leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

City dominated the game from start to finish as they grabbed yet another win in the Manchester derby, continuing their recent dominance over the Red Devils.

United manager Eric ten Hag opted for Sofyan Amrabat in holding midfield as Casemiro was out injured. Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, and Bruno Fernandes played just behind Rasmus Hojlund, who led the line up-front.

City started with a 4-2-3-1 setup with Erling Haaland as the lone striker, while Jack Grealish and Phil Foden played on the wings. Argentine World Cup winner Julian Alvarez pulled the strings in the number ten role.  

City dominate from the start

The visitors started the game on the front foot playing with their envious passing range as United hardly got any possession to their name.

City should have opened the scoring in the 8^th minute when United keeper Andre Onana parried away Rodri’s header unconvincingly, but Haaland inexplicably failed to convert the rebound from point-blank range as Harry Maguire cleared the ball off the line.

Onana then made a fine save in the 20^th minute as he cleared away Grealish’s deflected right-footed effort.

Manchester City were awarded a penalty in the 24^th minute after referee Paul Tierney consulted the video assistant referee (VAR) to point to the spot.

Replays suggested that Hojlund needlessly obstructed and pulled Rodri down in the box from Alvarez’s free-kick. Haaland stepped up and made no mistake to give Guardiola’s side the lead.

Hojlund almost atoned for his mistake just minutes later when he ran through on goal to beat Ederson in the penalty box, but the Danish striker failed to apply the final touches as the City defense recovered in time.

Deep in stoppage time of the first half, both goalkeepers at either end made world-class saves. First Ederson stopped United from restoring parity from McTominay’s thumping effort before Onana kept the score at 1-0 with a brilliant diving save to keep out Haaland’s header from point-blank range.

Haaland extends lead early in the second half

The Norwegian striker however made no mistake right after halftime when he made it 2-0 from a similar position in the back post as he headed home from Bernardo Silva’s left-wing floated cross.

The Red Devils hardly improved after the break, and they uncharacteristically failed to garner any sort of momentum with their wayward passing.

Right at the hour mark, Grealish came close to making it 3-0 following a wonderful City interplay but the English winger put his effort just wide from inside the box.

Rashford, however, should have halved the deficit in the 70^th minute but the United striker dragged his shot wide following a wonderful cross-field ball from Eriksen. Just two minutes later,

Onana once again made a brilliant save one-on-one from Haaland’s dinked effort that kept the score at 2-0.

City put the game beyond United when Foden tapped into an empty net in the 80^th minute as Onana parried away Rodri’s strike but Haaland reacted quickest to slide across the ball to the goal scorer.

United will be thoroughly disappointed with the performances as they were outclassed at home.

They will, however look to bounce back when they travel to London to face Fulham next weekend before a trip to Newcastle United in midweek in the Carabao Cup. City, meanwhile, will look to keep their momentum going as they Bournemouth.

Despite going a goal behind early on, Los Blancos rescued a 2-1 win in the first Clasico of the season.

Ilkay Gundogan opened his account for Barcelona, before Bellingham’s two strikes stole all three points for the visitors.

Barcelona came into this game with several injury concerns. While Pedri and Frenkie de Jong were sidelined, striker Robert Lewandowski was only deemed fit to start from the bench.

Xavi opted to play Ferran Torres in the number nine role. Ilkay Gundogan, Joao Cancelo, and Gavi stationed in midfield while Joao Cancelo was deployed as a right winger.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat Braga in the Champions League and Los Blancos started Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo. Meanwhile Jude Bellingham played just in behind the front two. Toni Kroos, Aurélien Tchouameni, and Fede Valverde played in midfield for the visitors.

Barcelona outplayed Real Madrid and Bellingham in the first-half of the Clasico

Barcelona started the game better of the two sides and took the lead in the 6^th minute. It was Gundogan who played a quick one-two with Ferran Torres. He then took advantage of a mix-up between Tchouameni and David Alaba.

He then side-footed his effort past Kepa Arrizabalaga to give his side the opening goal. The Germa, has now scored in the Manchester derby, the Der Klassiker, and the Clasico, a unique distinction.

The hosts dominated proceedings with their quick passing and maintaining possession in closed spaces keeping Madrid at bay. Fermin Lopez came close to doubling his side’s lead in the 16^th minute.

However, his strike hit the post as Real survived the onslaught. Ancelotti’s side looked pedestrian for most of the first half. Vinicius and Bellingham struggled to make any sort of impact.

The visitors, however, showed much desire at the beginning of the second half playing with more intent, and were once again lucky not to have fallen two goals behind in the 52^nd minute.

Inigo Martinez struck the post with a diving header following Gundogan’s corner before Ronald Araujo’s rebound was kept out by Kepa.

Cancelo also came close to extending his side’s lead but Camavinga blocked his shot.

Real Madrid vastly improved in the second-half

Marc-Andre ter Stegen brilliantly stopped Tchouameni’s long-range effort in the 67^th minute, but just seconds later was beaten by a ferocious Bellingham strike from 25 yards, that hit the top-left corner. It was the Englishman’s 12^th goal in 13 games for the Los Blancos.

Barcelona made several changes in the final fifteen minutes to get the winning goal, but the visitors were in the ascendancy as they dominated in the proceedings.

Gavi and then substitute Lewandowski did come close for the hosts while Joselu almost snatched it for the visitors deep in stoppage time. Madrid did steal the three points in the 92^nd minute when it was Bellingham who scored from close range.

The Blaugrana would feel hard done by the result and would regret missing their chances when they were 1-0 ahead, while Madrid courtesy of the win, moved to the top of the LaLiga table on goal difference. This placed them ahead of Girona with 28 points, four points clear of Barcelona.

A lively encounter saw both sides have chances early on.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen first denied Inaki Williams’ effort in the fifth minute before Joao Felix was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a brilliant first-time effort that had Unai Simon beaten in goal.

Just minutes later, Simon made a world-class save to deny Fermin Lopez and Barcelona’s opening goal on the night.

Ter Stegen then denied Inaki Williams’ goal-bound effort with an acrobatic save in what was an end-to-end encounter. The Williams brothers caused the hosts all sorts of problems and the visitors would have taken the lead had it not been for Inigo Martínez whose last-ditch block kept the score goalless.

The half’s best opportunity also fell to Bilbao right on the stroke of halftime. Nico Williams’ effort was destined to hit the back of the net, but it was Ter Stegen once again who came up with a remarkable save as both sides headed into the tunnel tied 0-0.

Barcelona create more in second half

Barcelona had the better chances in the second half. First Joao Felix’s right-footed curling effort was denied by Simon before Lopez couldn’t redirect the rebound.

Just seconds later, Lopez was once again guilty of missing another golden opportunity following Ferran Torres’ cutback.

Lamine Yamal then squandered a golden opportunity from Joao Felix’s through ball as the score somehow remained goalless.

Barcelona finally got the getaway in the 80^th minute when 17-year-old substitute Marc Guiu scored with his first touch after coming on.

Joao Felix was once again in the heart of the move as the Portuguese threaded a neat pass for Guiu who slotted past the onrushing Simon to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

Milan came into this high-voltage encounter as the stronger of the two sides having won seven of their eight league games this season.

Pioli named attacking lineup

Manager Stefano Pioli thus opted for an attacking lineup with Christian Pulisic and Rafa Leao pulling the strings on the wings, with Olivier Giroud as the lone striker up front.

The home side’s game plan was clear. Milan would take the game to the opposition and stretch the Juventus back line with fast-attacking football.

Giroud almost gave the hosts the lead in the 14th minute, but his low strike on goal was brilliantly tipped around the post by Wojciech Szczesny in the Juventus goal.

The visitors then came close in the 33^rd minute when Filip Kostic released Adrien Rabiot on the left wing but the French midfielder dragged his shot just wide.

Milan reduced to to ten men

Four minutes later, much against the run of play Milan were reduced to ten men when defender Malick Thiaw cynically brought down Moise Kean when he was through on goal.

Kean then squandered a golden opportunity just before half-time as he failed to hit the target from close range from Rabiot’s brilliant ball at the back post.  

Despite playing with a man down, it was Milan who started the brighter of the two sides after the break.

Leao was a constant threat for the home side on the left as the Portuguese winger tried to take the attack on the Juventus backline on his own.

It was the Old Lady, however, who took the lead in the 63^rd minute when Manuel Locatelli’s 30-yard effort took a huge deflection off Rade Krunic to beat Antonio Mirante in the Milan goal.

The game became cagey, thereafter, as Juventus were happy to sit back and frustrate Milan with their numerical superiority and passing in between the lines.

Substitute Dusan Vlahovic came close to double his side’s lead twice late in the game but Mirante denied the striker on both occasions. Milan couldn’t garner clear-cut opportunities despite changing from the bench as the visitors held on for a huge win.

The result means that Juventus cut the gap on their opponents to just a point, and are now two behind Serie A leaders Inter.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side will look to keep the momentum going when they host Hallas Verona next week while Milan face a huge test away at reigning Champions Napoli.

Manchester City Etihad Stadium Tour

The 75-minute Manchester City guided tour starts with sitting on the blue seats behind one of the goals. The tour guide points out the nearby broadcast booths, as well as the Haaland family’s VIP box where the striker’s father Alf is often seen on matchdays.

Next, the guide takes you to the warmup area and the gym. You get to feel what it’s like to walk down the famous glass players’ tunnel and out onto the pitch After posing for photos in the tunnel, you can make yourself comfortable on Pep Guardiola’s padded seat beside the touchline to get a ‘Pep’s view’ of the stadium from the dugout.

Next, walk to the dressing room where you’ll see individual player lockers and their jerseys and get a feel of what it’s like on game days. You also get to hear interesting stories and anecdotes from an audio-visual show in the dressing room. Next, you wander into the award-winning hospitality suite, and the Tunnel Club, and don’t forget to check out the exhibition space with holographic content.

A surprise remains at the end. After you’re seated in the press conference room, you can field questions with a virtual Guardiola and pose for pictures. Finish the day by grabbing some memorabilia from the club store that will give a 10% discount on all items for the day with the lanyard.

Overall, the Manchester City Etihad Stadium Tour experience is highly recommended, and well worth the money.

The result helped the Reds jump to the top of the Premier League table. Although this was only temporarily before the rest of the weekend games.

It was Everton, however, who started the better of the two sides in the early kickoff at Anfield. Dominic Calvert-Lewin squandered a glorious early opportunity to put his side ahead. He glanced his header straight to Alisson in the Liverpool goal. The hosts then settled into the game. They showed their superiority, playing with intent and looking to mount attacks in the final third.

Salah brace won Merseyside derby for Liverpool

Much of the good work from Sean Dyche’s side was undone in the 37^th minute. Ashley Young received his marching orders. The English wingback had received a yellow card earlier in the half when he fouled Luis Diaz. When he caught the Colombian again with a late sliding tackle, his time was up.

Liverpool came close on several occasions. However, they lacked the edge in the final third as Jordan Pickford didn’t have much of note to deal with.

Everton did well to soak up the pressure despite playing with ten men. However, fifteen minutes from the end, their good work was undone. Liverpool were awarded a penalty when Michael Keane handled the ball in the box.

The Egyptian then scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time as Everton were caught looking for an equalizer. It was the 31-year-old’s 201^st goal for the Merseyside giants. The result means that Liverpool now have 20 points from nine games and the Anfield side would love to keep the momentum going next week against Nottingham Forest.

Manager Jurgen Klopp also recorded the most derby wins in his tenure with nine, overtaking former club boss Rafa Benitez. Everton, meanwhile, will look to bounce back next week in a tricky away test at West Ham.

Charlton is also one of United’s greatest-ever players. During his time with the club, his record was 249 goals in 758 appearances from 1956 to 1973.

He won three first-division titles with the club and a European Cup in 1968.

A club statement from United read, “Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton. One of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.”

Sir Bobby Charlton passed surrounded by family

Charlton passed in the early hours of Saturday morning and was surrounded by his family at the time. The Englishman was knighted in 1994 and was one of the most influential figures in the game. He also became a director at Old Trafford. In February 2016, the club named the South Stand after him.

He played a key role in the 1966 World Cup win, playing all six games, scoring thrice, that included two against Portugal in the semi-final win. Charlton was also an ever-present at the 1962 and 1970 World Cups.

Furthermore, Charlton was a survivor of the Munich air disaster, in which eight of his teammates were killed in 1958.

A statement from the England football team said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton. An integral part of our 1966 World Cup winning campaign, Sir Bobby won 106 caps and scored 49 times for the #ThreeLions. A true legend of our game. We will never forget you, Sir Bobby.”
