And there you have the qualifying procedure for the new look UEFA Champions League. It’s worth noting that all three European club competitions (Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Conference) will have a 36-team league format. UEFA Conference teams will only play six matches compared to eight for the other two competitions). No more teams are dropping down to another competition after the League Stage. In other words, for teams finishing 25-36 in their respective leagues, their European seasons will end.

Another change that is being overlooked is that once the Round of 16 teams are known, a single draw will determine opponents through the Final. So no longer will there be a draw for the Quarterfinals but rather a ‘bracket’ is created that American fans are familiar with other sports.

And finally, I wanted to highlight some numbers: 236 teams in total are entering the various European competitions when considering all qualifying rounds. 108 teams will compete in the 3 competitions (36 teams x 3). That’s a huge number. And credit should be given to UEFA for widening the net and having more teams share in the wealth that these competitions produce.

Disappointment in Germany 2024

Croatia’s journey at Euro 2024 (likely) ended in heartbreak. While still theoretically not eliminated from the tournament as I write this, too many factors need to come together to see Croatia’s journey at Euro 2024 not coming to an end in the next 48 hours. Two injury-time goals in successive matches proved to be the difference between success and failure for the ‘Vatreni.’ Against Albania, Croatia conceded a devastating equalizer deep into stoppage time, effectively taking qualification out of their hands. Just days later, history repeated itself in a cruel fashion against Italy. After taking the lead through captain Luka Modrić’s goal, Croatia looked poised to secure the win they needed. But in the 98th minute, Mattia Zaccagni scored for Italy, snatching a 1-1 draw and leaving Croatia’s hopes hanging by a thread.

While the manner of elimination was brutal, it masked deeper issues with Croatia’s performances. The team struggled to impose themselves for long stretches and lacked their usual fluency. An aging squad showed signs of fatigue, unable to maintain their trademark intensity for over 90 minutes. Though they fought valiantly, this golden generation appeared to have finally run out of steam on the big stage.

Second golden generation of Croatia repeatedly falls short of glory

Croatia’s current crop of stars has long been compared to the nation’s first golden generation that took the 1998 World Cup by storm. Led by the creative genius of Zvonimir Boban, the lethal finishing of Davor Šuker, and the mercurial talents of Robert Prosinečki, that team captured the imagination of football fans worldwide.

Their run to third place in France was a shock to the traditional hierarchy of soccer. Davor Šuker won the Golden Boot with six goals, while Boban pulled the strings in midfield with his vision and technique. The team played with flair and passion. It established Croatia as a force on the global stage just years after gaining independence.

That 1998 side set the bar incredibly high and served as an inspiration for future generations of Croatian talent. The likes of Modrić, Ivan Rakitić, and Mario Mandžukić grew up idolizing Boban, Šuker and co. They would go on to form their own golden generation, taking Croatia to even greater heights.

Stepping up for an otherwise aging core

The current Croatian squad is built around a core of players now in their mid-30s. Luka Modrić, at 38, remains the heartbeat of the team but can no longer dominate matches for 90 minutes. Ivan Perišić (35) and Marcelo Brozović (31) are also past their peak years.

While their experience is invaluable, their declining physical attributes have become apparent. The challenge now is identifying the next generation of stars to take up the mantle. Joško Gvardiol has already established himself as one of Europe’s top young defenders at Manchester City. His composure and ball-playing ability make him an ideal modern center-back to build around. In midfield, Lovro Majer of Rennes has shown flashes of creativity that have drawn comparisons to Modrić. The 25-year-old possesses excellent vision and technique, though he is yet to consistently produce at the highest level. Nikola Vlašić is another attacking midfielder with potential, but he needs to find consistency.

Up front, young talents like Dion Drena Beljo and Roko Šimić are highly rated but unproven at the senior international level. Croatia, in reality, has never found a true clinical striker to emerge and fill the void left by Mario Mandžukić’s retirement. Luka Sučić of Red Bull Salzburg is perhaps the brightest prospect. At just 21, he has become a key player for the Austrian champions and impressed in the Champions League. His all-action style and eye for goal make him an exciting option for Croatia’s midfield future.

Punching above their weight

Croatia’s achievements on the world stage are remarkable for a nation of just 4 million people. Coming home with Bronze at the 1998 World Cup; Silver from the 2018 World Cup; and Bronze again in 2022 with such a small talent pool is a testament to the country’s footballing culture and mentality.

This over-achievement relative to population size is a source of immense pride for Croatians. It also creates lofty expectations that are difficult to consistently meet. The team has repeatedly defied the odds, but sustaining success with limited resources is an enormous challenge.

As this golden generation fades, there will likely be a period of transition and re-calibration of expectations. A new coach may be brought in to oversee this changing of the guard and implement fresh tactical ideas. The Croatian Football Federation must also continue developing youth talent to unearth the next wave of stars.

Writing off Croatia would be foolish given their track record of producing world-class players. The fighting spirit and technical quality ingrained in Croatian football culture will ensure they remain competitive on the international stage.

While Euro 2024 may mark the end of an era, it need not spell long-term decline for the ‘Vatreni’. With the right blend of emerging talent and a few experienced heads, Croatia can build another team capable of punching above its weight on the global stage.

The journey may be challenging. Still, Croatia has consistently shown an ability to regenerate and reinvent itself on the football pitch. This small nation’s impact on the beautiful game has already been immortalized. There’s no reason to think that its remarkable legacy cannot continue with the next golden generation for Croatia.

While the odds may not favor them, the Croatians have consistently defied expectations, and their supporters see their team’s age not as a liability but as a wealth of experience that could propel them to new heights.

The spirit of the Croatian fans is electric, with many already making their way to Germany in anticipation of the tournament’s kick-off. Reports suggest that nearly 100,000 Croatian supporters will descend upon Berlin for the team’s opening match. That is on Saturday against Spain, one of the tournament’s favorites. This sea of red-and-white checkered fans promises to create an atmosphere akin to a home game for the ‘Vatreni’.

“We are ready to provide the best support for our team,” says Ivan Kolar, a Croatian expatriate in Berlin organizing a massive fan gathering. “Around 100,000 Croats will come to Berlin, so we expect a fantastic party!”

Croatia brings unwavering support into Euro 2024

The prospect of facing the formidable Spanish squad in their opening Group B encounter does little to dampen the enthusiasm of Croatian fans. Their faith in the team’s abilities is unwavering, fueled by memories of their recent triumphs against elite opposition.

“Croatia knows how to exceed expectations,” says Joe Strange, a journalist who has tipped Croatia as a potential dark horse. “If they can navigate their way out of the group of death, Croatia will dream of their chance.”

While progressing from a group that also includes the defending champions Italy and a resurgent Albania will be no easy feat, the Croatians are no strangers to adversity. Their remarkable runs at the last two World Cups have shown their ability to thrive under pressure and overcome formidable obstacles.

Lots of talent, but only one Luka Modric

At the heart of Croatia’s hopes lie the legendary Luka Modrić. At 38 years old, he is likely playing in his final major tournament. The Real Madrid maestro is one of the greatest players of his generation. Now, he has the motivation to add an international trophy to an impressive cabinet of silverware.

Modrić’s presence combines with the experience of seasoned campaigners like Ivan Perišić, Domagoj Vida, and Marcelo Brozović. Overall, Croatia has a calming influence and a deep well of knowledge from which the team can draw. Younger talents like Joško Gvardiol and Luka Sučić also have the opportunity to learn from these veterans. At the same time, they contribute to Croatia’s pursuit of glory.

Bookmakers made Croatia long shots to lift the trophy at 40 to 1 odds. Croatia is not a frontrunner by any means. Regardless, the nation’s fans remain undeterred, buoyed by the team’s proven ability to defy the odds. This week, the Ecuadorian League announced that they have terminated their contract with GolTV, citing unpaid fees to the clubs. Miguel Ángel Loor, president of Liga Pro, stated, “The clubs have decided to authorize the president of Liga Pro to terminate the agreement with the company that owns the television rights.” This news brings up what has become a familiar question for the soccer community not just in Ecuador but also in the United States where GolTV has been a mainstay for soccer aficionados for over two decades, is this the end of the network?

For US viewers, the potential loss of GOL-TV would mean the end of an era. Since its inception in 2003, the journey has been a rollercoaster ride, with high-profile acquisitions and heartbreaking losses. One of the current jewels in GOL-TV’s crown has been its coverage of the Portuguese Primeira Liga. For fans of the “big three” – Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting CP – GOL-TV has been a lifeline. These clubs, steeped in history and boasting passionate global fanbases, have provided some of the most thrilling matches on the network. It’s worth noting that GOL-TV’s Portuguese coverage is part of a long tradition dating back to the 1980s when a channel called RTP Int’l first introduced American viewers to the magic of Portuguese soccer.

Today, the channel can still be found on Fubo’s streaming service and DirecTV Stream, among others.

But for many of us, GOL-TV will always hold a special place. It was there when others weren’t, bringing us the global game in all its diverse glory.

So, is this finally the end of GOL-TV? Only time will tell but it has never been this bleak. But then again, if history is any guide, don’t count them out just yet. They’ve defied the odds before. And for the sake of soccer fans across the U.S., here’s hoping they can do it again.

So, it’s safe, for the time being, to take top European domestic leagues off the table.

Is the World Cup out of sight for Apple?

One potential prize for Apple could be future World Cup rights. Despite FIFA’s traditional insistence that the tournament has a free-to-air television offering. With the continued fragmentation of TV viewership and rise of streaming, that long-held policy may be due for revision, opening the door for a deep-pocketed streamer like Apple to make an exclusive play for World Cup 2030 or 2034 rights – at the right price, of course. 

If not the World Cup or Europe’s biggest domestic leagues, what other major competitions could entice Apple?

Other global streaming rights on the table for Apple

One possibility is the UEFA Champions League rights, which are currently shared by Paramount+, Univision, and others in the U.S. market. Securing exclusive global streaming rights, when they become available again, could allow Apple to capture the viewership around the world’s elite club competition featuring giants like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and more.

Apple could also look to supplement its MLS deal by going after international rights for elite South American club competitions. For example, the Copa Libertadores is a sensible fit for Apple. These tournaments have passionate global followings. This is particularly true among the large Latino diaspora audiences of key markets like the United States. Adding the Libertadores and other top South American club tournaments to its portfolio allows Apple to market itself as the streaming home of elite club soccer across the Americas.

Similarly, Apple may target global rights packages for Asia’s top leagues and competitions like the AFC Champions League, Chinese Super League, J-League and more. These could hold appeal not just for audiences across Asia, but also diaspora viewers worldwide – including the lucrative market of South Asians in regions like the Middle East, the UK, Canada and others.

Finally, we have all the competitions from the African continent. Currently, the top club competitions such as the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup belong to beIN SPORTS in the US. Earlier this year, the big competition in Africa, the Nations Cup, ended up on YouTube worldwide. This is the type of streaming arrangement Apple looks for.

The Competition

Any of these potential rights acquisitions wouldn’t come cheap – the competition from other deep-pocketed streamers and broadcasters is intense. Apple’s play for any of these rights draws competing bids from Amazon. Akin to Apple, Amazon has built a major presence in soccer through its current deals. Other tech giants like Google, Facebook and Netflix may enter the fray for each set of rights.

Apple’s vast cash reserves give it arguably unlimited spending power. Yet, the company is also famously judicious with major acquisitions or investments. CEO Tim Cook will need convincing that any nine or ten-figure global rights deal would sufficiently help. That includes boosting Apple TV+ subscriptions, hardware sales and service bundle adoption to justify the cost.

Ultimately, Apple seems motivated to obtain worldwide rights that can drive value across its entire global user base. The fragmented European domestic leagues do not fit Apple’s eye. Going after worldwide rights for other top-tier competitions can accelerate the media conglomerate’s ascension into sports streaming. The same goes for non-soccer properties like international cricket or niche favorites like F1.

Apple has the FIFA Club World Cup and MLS/MLB deals in hand. There is enough content to begin seriously marketing Apple TV+ as a sports-centric streamer. Regardless, bigger game remains to be hunted if the technology titan wants to become the true global sports streaming destination. The chase is underway – and Apple’s willingness to spend big puts every major competition squarely in its sights.

The renewal comes after the EFL’s record domestic TV rights deal with Sky Sports. That deal is worth nearly $1.2 billion over five years. While focused on UK coverage, that agreement will fundamentally change the international broadcasts of EFL matches. For example, the vastly lucrative American market will benefit greatly.

The broadcast deal and enhanced coverage

For the past several years, ESPN+ has been the primary home for EFL action stateside. It has done an admirable job showcasing marquee matches from the Championship, League One, League Two, EFL Cup, and playoff tournaments. However, the exact future of EFL rights in the US beyond 2023/24 remains uncertain. The EFL awarded international rights to Relevent Sports. Relevent will help broker a deal between the EFL and an American broadcaster.

Regardless of which US network or streaming platform ultimately lands the EFL package from 2024/25 onward, fans should notice a stark upgrade in production quality and overall viewing experience. This is thanks to the league’s deepened partnership with the broadcast experts at IMG.

A major enhancement will be more robust multi-camera coverage deployed at EFL matches. In the second-tier Championship, all games will now have a minimum of six camera angles. The previous standard was four cameras. Matches in League One will go from one to four cameras. Meanwhile, League Two fixtures rise from one to two cameras. Later rounds of the EFL Cup will increase from two to a minimum four-camera setup.

“The major change fans will see is increased camera setups across every division,” stated Ben Wright, EFL Chief Commercial Officer. “It was imperative that our production partner had the experience and capability to elevate our broadcast output across our competitions, and IMG could offer that world-class service level.”

More comprehensive USA EFL broadcasts lead to bolstered infrastructure, connectivity

In addition to expanded camera coverage, IMG will produce more comprehensive EFL broadcasts packed with new features to enhance the viewer experience.

All matches produced by IMG will integrate enriched in-game graphics packages along with more processed output elements like recaps, highlight reels from the live match, and clips from other concurrent games.

Post-match, IMG will compile more robust highlight packages for distribution to the EFL’s media partners, including international rights holders like Relevent Sports.

“Outside of Sky Sports’ main TV selections, all broadcasts will feature enriched in-game graphics and improved features to deliver a premium experience for viewers at home and abroad,” explained Barney Francis, IMG’s EVP of Studios.

To ensure reliable delivery of this influx of high-quality content, IMG and the EFL are working with NEP Connect to upgrade bandwidth capacity and fortify the infrastructure connecting stadiums to IMG’s remote production hub at Stockley Park in London.

From Stockley Park’s dedicated EFL production center, IMG will produce 866 EFL matches per season for Sky’s new streaming platform, alongside 832 matches annually for international distribution by Relevent and Pitch. The remaining Sky linear broadcasts will be produced in-house.

This remote production model has been in place for the past four years during IMG’s initial partnership with the EFL. That spans over 500,000 minutes of live content.

“We’ve built a groundbreaking remote production workflow for the EFL that is unrivaled in football globally,” said Francis. “We are thrilled to take the viewing experience up another level with upscaled production, enhanced coverage, and continued innovation.”

USA fans benefit from new EFL broadcasts

These changes to EFL broadcasts shape how American fans consume EFL action beginning in 2024/25. The increased production capabilities stemming from this new partnership ensure a substantially better product. Whichever broadcaster lands the rights will benefit from the initiatives across the pond.

The EFL has grown considerably in popularity stateside in recent years. The Championship offers intense competition and historic clubs. League One and League Two provide a beloved, grittier flavor of English soccer outcasts often crave.

A blockbuster new domestic broadcast deal between the English Football League and Sky Sports was announced on Monday. While the agreement is specific to the UK market, it will undoubtedly have ripple effects across the pond.

Let’s start with the big news itself. EFL clubs have unanimously approved a record-breaking five-year rights agreement with Sky Sports.

It’s worth a staggering £895 million in guaranteed payments, plus an additional £40 million in marketing benefits.

This deal represents a 50% increase over the previous agreement. It will result in more than 1,000 matches being broadcast each season. This includes the Sky Bet Championship, League One, League Two, Carabao Cup, and EFL Trophy. That’s an unprecedented number for any club football broadcasting rights deal.

iFollow is likely to remain in the US

For fans of EFL teams in the US, one of the intriguing aspects is the fate of iFollow’s streaming service.

The new deal will effectively replace iFollow and other domestic streaming options like WanderersTV within the UK from 2024/25 onwards. However, EFL has confirmed that international streaming services will remain in place.

This means American fans should still be able to watch their beloved clubs through the familiar iFollow platform.

It’s uncertain which US broadcaster(s) Relevent will ultimately partner with to air the matches from 2024/25 through 2028/29.

While ESPN has established itself as the home of the EFL in America, the potential for another network to acquire rights could shake things up.

Fans may need to adjust to a new broadcast partner, commentary teams, and overall viewing experience. However, the increased number of matches on offer through the Sky Sports deal should provide more opportunities for robust coverage, no matter where the rights end up.

Now the very purpose of VAR feels undermined, with technology failing to provide clarity amongst the perception that human error remains rampant. There is a sense key tenets – that VAR intervenes only for “clear and obvious” errors regarding goals, penalties, red cards, or mistaken identity – have been lost as referees are accused of forensic nitpicking or seeking reasons to disallow goals.

Premier League chief Tony Scholes admitted this week that the English top flight’s current VAR experience is “nowhere near good enough.” A common refrain is VAR’s role in disrupting spontaneous match celebrations due to interminable reviews for marginal offsides or soft fouls in earlier passages of play.

Veering from the technology’s original intended path

So where did it all go wrong for a system designed to eliminate human error? Critics suggest that in the quest for perfect decision-making, VAR has shifted authority too far away from the on-field referee through over-scrutinization. It has also failed to deliver clarity amid confusing handball laws and the precise physics of offside calls leaving margins thinner than a hair’s breadth.

Restoring a greater balance of subjectivity could help VAR achieve its purpose. At the same time, it allows room for refereeing common sense and feeling for the spirit of the game. Greater selectivity over reviewable incidents may speed up decisions. However, replays will likely always remain hostage to interpretation through various camera angles and the continuum of fast-paced contact sport.

The Croatian fiasco demonstrates that whatever technological aids are introduced, the human aspect remains paramount. Perhaps incremental improvements can smooth VAR’s rough edges to build greater fairness and transparency. Yet, those incremental improvements do not lie in the improvement of technology. Rather, the sport’s laws demand further clarification. For example, the interpretation of what constitutes a handball in the box varies from referee to referee. Fans cannot expect to get consistency from the VAR room any more than what we got on the field. Faster and clearer decisions are the only thing that will appease players and fans. Only then will we be able to say that VAR has achieved the true purpose for which it was designed.

For Oceania federations, selling media rights to FIFA+ generates critical revenue that can accelerate football development. “We have expanded commercially through selling our live streaming, media and data rights for the next two years,” noted OFC General Secretary Franck Castillo.

Oceania has a guaranteed World Cup place with new visibility and resources courtesy of FIFA+. Therefore, the area Oceania football can nurture talent and gain fans both regionally and across the globe. Streamed Oceania matches may attract few viewers today, but accessible content builds audiences over time. And emerging Pacific stars developed with FIFA’s support in the coming years may shine in World Cups to come.

Also, with the prospect of Australia being in contention to host a World Cup, development of soccer as a whole is at the forefront for FIFA in the area. The Group Stage saw Japan and South Korea stumble and fail to finish top of their respective groups as was anticipated. The storylines came from outside the traditional powers of Asia. Tajikistan, playing in its first AFC Asian Cup, used an extra-time goal in the final group-stage game to defeat Lebanon. That was Tajikistan’s first win in a tournament of this magnitude. In total, seven goals in the group stage came in stoppage time to either give teams the lead or tie the game. The parity in the 2023 Asian Cup has been making it stand out against other tournaments. Moreover, that extends into the knockout stages.

The ‘Round of 16’ saw the favorites finally play up to their potential. The top match was Saudi Arabia, led by ex-Italy boss Roberto Mancini faced tournament favorites South Korea, led by ex-USA National team coach Jurgen Klinsmann. South Korea needed a 99th-minute equalizer to push the match to penalties where Klinsmann’s men eliminated the Saudis. Australia breezed past Indonesia (4-0) while Japan finally put together a great performance in defeating Bahrain 3-1. Tajikistan continued its sensational story with a win on penalties over the United Arab Emirates, which was a semifinalist in the 2019 Asian Cup.

Quarterfinals next in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup

The quarterfinals will take place on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2 and 3. It kicks off with surprise package Tajikistan taking on Jordan followed by what is the most anticipated quarterfinal encounter. Australia takes on South Korea in a matchup of two teams that reached the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup. South Korea’s squad features the talented Son Heung-min of Tottenham and Wolves’ star Hwang Hee-chan. Australia came to Qatar with a very balanced mix of young and experienced players. Competitive play in a good atmosphere

The atmosphere in the Ivorian stadiums has been electrifying. The home crowd, it could be argued, was more intimidating than their national team, at least during the group stage. Games not featuring the hosts did not lack any energy as fans chanted & danced throughout matches with infectious joy. On the field, one of the tournament’s major themes has been evenly contested games with few lopsided scorelines. The 36 group stage matches saw only three 0-0 final scorelines. Some historic results were witnessed, including Mauritania’s famous 1-0 win over Algeria and an impressive run of results by the islanders of Cape Verde.

Before the round of 16, the host nation provided more drama by firing coach Jean-Louis Gasset after an unconvincing group stage and just 2 days before facing defending champions Senegal. His replacement, interim manager Jean-Claude Wamket, inspired a monumental upset, with the Elephants beating the Lions of Teranga on penalties after a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Besides the penalty shoot-out win by the hosts over Senegal, other surprises included South Africa eliminating Morocco; DR Congo eliminating Egypt which was missing the injured Mohammed Salah; and Cape Verde’s continued success, this time eliminating another surprise side in Mauritania. The results set up some mouthwatering quarterfinal matchups.

Looking to the last eight at 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

The quarterfinal stage will take place this Friday & Saturday (February 2/3) and will open with an all-West African quarterfinal, the Super Eagles of Nigeria take on the surprise package Angola. The irresistible Victor Osimhen spearheads Augustine Eguavoen’s Nigeria. Angola’s veteran coach Pedro Gonçalves has organized his side superbly and scored 9 goals in their 4 matches.

Friday’s second match features Guinea facing Congo DR. Congo has reached this stage after three draws in the group stage and a dramatic penalty shootout over Egypt in the round of 16.

Saturday’s lineup begins with Ivory Coast against Mali. The incident occurred after a 1-1 draw between Ankaragucu and Rizespor. Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca punched referee Halil Umut Meler in the face after Rizespor scored an equalizing goal in the 97th minute. Koca ran onto the field and struck Meler, who then fell to the ground. Ankaragucu players and staff then kicked the official in the face while he was down. Security personnel finally stepped in to help Meler off the field after the incident. He suffered injuries including a black eye and small facial fractures. Authorities arrested Koca along with two other suspects for “injuring a public official.”

Condemnation across Turkish Super Lig after referee attack

The assault brought swift and harsh condemnation across Turkish football. TFF chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi called it “a night of shame for Turkish football.” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the violence, saying “Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence.” FIFA President Gianni Infantino also spoke out, stating there is “absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field.” He called on authorities to ensure the safety of referees and strict punishments for assaults.

Ongoing issues with referee treatment

While this assault was an extreme incident, issues around the treatment of referees have been simmering in Turkish football for years. Irresponsible criticism by club officials has created a toxic environment, according to the TFF statement. “The despicable attack was made against all stakeholders of Turkish Football,” the federation said. It blamed a culture of targeting referees that “paved the way for this vile attack today.”

The club responsible for instigating the violence was quick to issue an apology. “We are saddened by the incident that took place this evening,” Ankaragucu said in a statement. We apologize to the Turkish football public and the entire sports community.” 

Despite the apology, the TFF is preparing to hand out major sanctions toward Ankaragucu.

Turkey is not alone in this issue though. Fan violence has been a steady issue across Europe in recent years. For example, the Super League Greece barred fans from attending games after violence in a volleyball match. Earlier in the year, a Greek fan died in the stands as the groups clashed. Although Turkey differs because it stems from unhinged violence toward referees, fans’ emotions have been running dangerously high in Europe.

Indefinite suspension across all leagues

As a result of this assault and the surrounding culture, the TFF has taken the unprecedented step of suspending all leagues indefinitely. “By the decision of the Turkish Football Federation Board of Directors, matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely,” their post-incident statement read. It remains unclear when games will resume in Turkey, but an extraordinary TFF meeting in upcoming days may provide more clarity. The suspension comes as a strong statement aimed at changing football culture and preventing any repetition of referee assaults. However, the question remains whether an ingrained atmosphere of hostility can reverse quickly enough to salvage this season. In the US, the Turkish Super Lig is available on beIN Sports.

The 54 nations of Africa are divided into nine Groups with each group winner gaining an automatic spot in the Final. The four best group runners-up will participate in a “final-four” tournament. As reported in September, CAF accused beIN SPORTS of owing nearly $80 million in unpaid broadcast fees. The confederation cited contractual breaches as justification for the unilateral termination of the deal. beIN disputed this claim, stating COVID-19 scheduling changes warranted withholding some payments. After threatening legal action, constructive discussions have now enabled a resolution.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed satisfaction at reestablishing mutually beneficial relations with beIN, a key sponsor and partner. He emphasized CAF’s commitment to good governance, ethics, and global best practices in its operations. “Investment in youth academies, clubs, infrastructure, and other aspects of African football development requires significant financial resources that partners like beIN can provide. CAF is delighted with its partnership with beIN and is committed to developing and expanding this relationship for the benefit of both parties,” concluded Dr. Motsepe.

Importance for upcoming tournaments

This restored partnership comes just in time for coverage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. This year’s edition of the tournament starts January 13th and runs through February 11th. The tournament will feature top national teams like Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, and Cameroon competing in Cote d’Ivoire. Soccer fans in the US can now expect continued broadcast access through beIN.

The deal also covers crucial club competitions like the CAF Champions League. With the group stage concluding on November 9th, the knockout phase begins on November 30th. beIN shows continued commitment to CAF and African soccer

In his statement, beIN CEO Yousef Al-Obaidly reaffirmed the company’s longstanding financial backing of African football. Dating back to 2009, beIN has invested heavily in rights fees and production costs to cover CAF tournaments. This enables wider exposure across its broadcast regions in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia-Pacific, France, and the USA. 

Currently, beIN SPORTS is broadcasting the African Football League. This is reminiscent of a super league involving teams from across Africa. Eventually, the competition will have a promotion and relegation system in three geographic areas. The second leg of the final in the precursor edition takes place this Sunday, Nov. 12. South African side Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco are the finalists. Wydad holds a 2-1 lead from the first leg.

The decision came just hours before the deadline for countries to submit an expression of interest to FIFA. Australia had been weighing up a bid over recent months but ultimately decided against it. Football Australia said it would instead focus efforts on bidding for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup and 2029 Club World Cup.

The statement said, “We believe we are in a strong position to host the oldest women’s international competition in the world – the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 – and then welcome the greatest teams in world football for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.”

Saudi Arabia Frontrunner to Host 2030 World Cup

With Australia out of the running, Saudi Arabia is now the host of the 2034 World Cup. Minutes after FIFA announced the bidding process was open earlier this month, the Saudis submitted their expression of interest. The Saudi bid has quickly gathered momentum, with the Asian Football Confederation and over 70 FIFA member associations publicly backing their bid. Saudi Arabia seems to have widespread support across Asia and looks poised to host the second World Cup in the Middle East after Qatar in 2022.

It likely means another World Cup in the winter rather than the traditional summer schedule. Qatar 2022 was moved to November/December to avoid the intense summer heat in the Gulf region. Temperatures in Saudi Arabia are similarly scorching in June/July, making a winter tournament probable. 

Shifting the World Cup to winter again forces major disruption to domestic leagues around the world. They need to halt seasons to accommodate the schedule. However, the general response from the fans after the Qatar 2022 World Cup was positive. Players were closer to peak performance and their conditioning was strong compared to a summer tournament.

However, Saudi Arabia has maintained its intent to host the 2034 World Cup in the summer. The organizing body for the Saudi Arabian bid would also face similar problems as Qatar. While the small nation would minimize travel times in the tournament, Saudi Arabia also raises concerns about human rights violations. That, combined with the heat, makes for more controversy ahead of a World Cup in the Middle East.

Saudi link to Australia’s decision is unclear

It is unclear if Saudi Arabia had any influence in Football Australia’s decision not to bid. Some officials hinted Saudi Arabia warned Australia against bidding. There is no evidence the Saudis strong-armed Australia out of the process. Football Australia maintains it conducted its assessment of whether to bid. The group determined not to proceed after weighing up all factors. There is speculation about backroom deals but nothing definitive.

Filosa, who calls games in French for Apple and MLS, is a well-respected commentator in Canada. He’s known for sharing honest opinions, but it appears that someone within the CF Montreal, Apple, or MLS organizations took umbrage at that.

According to Filosa’s post on social media platform X, “Sometimes harsh opinions and comments shared on my social media did not sit well with some people, and were reported and used to influence my bosses in the United States to make this decision.”

In the past, Filosa criticized CF Montreal and shared his opinions about the team’s struggles in the 2023 MLS season.

If true, this raises concerns about Apple and MLS’s willingness to offer honest commentary. Instead, it opts to protect relationships and branding, creating a very sterile experience. After all, soccer fans appreciate honest analysis whether it’s positive or negative about a team or player. By allegedly punishing a commentator for comments he made on social media, it encourages other MLS Season Pass commentators to conform.

The decision to not renew the commentator is irresponsible

If the allegations are true, rather than defend free speech, Apple and/or MLS chose to drop Filosa. This perceived capitulation to MLS interests could significantly damage Apple’s reputation as an independent media provider. The tech giant looks weak allowing outside pressure to dictate business decisions and editorial standards. It certainly sheds a negative light on MLS for being unable to endure any criticism of its product.

For many, Filosa’s sacking represents a dangerous precedent of leagues influencing coverage through corporate partners. As a reporter, Filosa saw it as his role to provide objective analysis and informed criticism of teams like Montreal when warranted. He believes the club leveraged Apple’s MLS deal to have him removed for doing his job. 

If true, this raises dire concerns about commentators’ freedom to question leagues and teams without censorship. Fans stand to lose independent perspectives while teams control narratives. Unlike traditional media, Apple is not a journalistic outlet with policies protecting reporters. Thus, Filosa was an easy target for Montreal seeking to silence negativity, however valid or invalid it may seem.

Courageous or Careless

From one view, Filosa showed courage by exposing how Montreal manipulated MLS and/or Apple and limited speech. On the other hand, some fans argue he should have known inflammatory comments could threaten his contract with an image-conscious sponsor. In any case, his public allegations make it difficult for Apple and MLS to ignore the insinuations of editorial meddling. Their responses could have ripple effects across sports media partnerships. Both face scrutiny from fans valuing uncensored analysis. But Montreal may also take heat for seemingly engineering Filosa’s exit.

Soccer fan Jonathan Slape summed it up. “This is one of the dangers of the League controlling their own broadcasting,” Slape mentioned on Twitter. “It’s going to ensure the critical voices are fewer due to fear of being let go. Honestly, it’s detrimental to the growth and culture of soccer in the US and Canada.”

Those close to Filosa cite passion as both an asset and an occasional liability. While often critical, he cares deeply about Montreal’s success. By gagging Filosa, Montreal loses a candid voice with insider team knowledge. This fuels perceptions the club is thin-skinned, fearing reasonable critiques. For Filosa, losing the job still stings regardless of the cause. He gave his employer his all. But his unwavering team passion persists, albeit in a diminished role. While disappointed, Filosa remains resolved to continue multi-sport coverage at Montreal’s 98.5 FM as he has for nearly 20 years. There, he is one of the principal voices covering soccer in French Canada. For him, censoring passion is the real loss. It may be the same consequence for MLS Season Pass in losing one of its notable French commentators.

While the Premier League is opening up more matches to TV, it will maintain the traditional Saturday 3 p.m. blackout window. This rule protects attendance at lower-league clubs where the 3 p.m. Saturday slot remains primetime. By moving more matches to Sundays, the league can balance increased TV viewership with preserving the integrity of the English soccer pyramid.

One major beneficiary of the added TV matches will be Premier League clubs playing in the Europa League and Conference League. Currently, clubs like West Ham, Brighton and Aston Villa often have weekend matches moved to Sunday due to their European commitments later in the week. Now more of these Sunday matches will be available on TV, giving clubs more exposure and revenue.

UK TV broadcasters enter bidding war for Premier League

The TV rights are split into 5 packages. A minimum of two broadcasters will show the matches. Incumbents like Sky Sports and TNT Sport will bid aggressively to retain their share of matches. However, streaming services like Amazon and DAZN enter the fray to try and wrestle away rights. With more matches available, the bidding war for rights will drive record revenue.

What it means for fans

Ultimately, the biggest beneficiaries of the new deal will be fans in the UK. The increase in televised matches gives British viewers more Premier League soccer to enjoy. For fans in the USA, this new deal has minimal impact. The league has opted to keep the traditional UK kickoff times, focusing on more matches rather than disrupting the flow of the weekend. For armchair fans in Britain, it means two more matches to watch on Sundays and an extra midweek date.

Following the record domestic deal signed with Sky Sports, this presents an opportunity for media companies in the United States. They have the chance to acquire a significant portion of the product’s content.

Domestic Deal Sets Foundation for International Growth

With over 1,000 domestic matches set to be broadcast by Sky Sports, the EFL has more content than ever before. This creates the potential for hundreds more EFL matches to be available in the US market.

Currently, the minimum number of EFL matches per season on US television is 182. With Sky Sports now airing over 1,000 matches domestically, it’s reasonable to expect international broadcast partners will gain access to many more games.

Projecting the scope of EFL International Rights Package

The number of Championship matches made available in the US could potentially double from the 147 currently on ESPN+. Instead of a minimum of 20 League One and League Two matches, there could be 50-75 matches or more.

Full midweek fixture rounds, playoff games, and expanded League Cup and EFL Trophy coverage provide opportunities to significantly grow the package size.

A 50-75% increase in EFL matches on US television would not be surprising during the next rights cycle.

It’s predicted that the minimum number will grow from 182 matches to 275 annually. This would give soccer fans in the US almost 100 more EFL games to enjoy. For context, a Premier League season has 380 total matches.

At a potential 300+ games per season, the EFL package would approach the number of Bundesliga (306) and La Liga (380) matches available in the US market. Having a high volume of content from England’s iconic league system would appeal to broadcasters.

Segmenting Rights to Increase Exposure

The growth to over 1,000 domestic matches also allows the EFL to segment its packages by competition. For example, Championship broadcast rights are likely heading to a streaming service like ESPN+.

League One and Two rights could theoretically go to CBSSports/Paramount while the Carabao Cup could be picked up by a network broadcaster like NBC/Peacock to complement its Premier League coverage.

There is also an opportunity to air games across both linear TV and streaming. Simulcasting select matches would satisfy traditional cable/satellite subscribers while also serving cord-cutters.

EFL and Premier League to potentially bundle rights in the future

Upon completion of the next EFL contract, the EFL and Premier League plan to bundle their international media rights together. This would massively increase the number of matches available overseas.

This would see the number of matches available to overseas broadcasters skyrocket from the current 380 Premier League games to over 2,000 matches encompassing the Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two.

Bringing the English soccer pyramid under one media rights deal will generate more revenue for lower league clubs and drive increased exposure for the EFL competitions.

Details of the Premier League and EFL Agreement

Under the terms presented to EFL clubs, the lower divisions would receive 14.75% of the net media revenue from the pooled overseas broadcasting rights starting in 2028-29. This is projected to more than double the current £130 million in annual solidarity payments from the Premier League to the EFL.

Additionally, the EFL would get an £88 million bonus this season ahead of the collective sales. The overseas rights are currently worth around £5 billion over three years to the Premier League. Their value has outpaced domestic deals in recent years.

Financial Support for EFL Clubs

After next season, the Premier League will also pay the EFL an extra £130 million annually as part of a “New Deal for Football.” The money will be distributed based on the final table position, meaning bigger payouts for more successful clubs.

EFL clubs are said to be reviewing the Premier League’s offer. Concerns remain over some of the imposed spending restrictions attached to the new funding. However, the deal would provide increased financial security to the 72 EFL teams.

Implications for the U.S. Market

For the Premier League, it gives them long-desired control over the EFL’s media rights. But the biggest impact may come in how the league approaches the U.S. market next time around.

NBC signed a six-year, $2.7 billion deal to broadcast the Premier League in 2015. It was a record agreement at the time and marked a major milestone in soccer’s popularity stateside. The network then re-upped for another six years in 2021, paying more than $2 billion this time.

Meanwhile, ESPN currently holds broadcast rights to the EFL as part of its expansive soccer portfolio.

With Premier League and EFL rights bundled, what is now the ‘Crowned Jewel’ of league rights would only become even more desirable – but also very expensive. How much would NBC or ESPN be willing to pay for such rights? And, it is impossible to have a discussion today about US soccer rights without mentioning Apple. Since securing worldwide MLS rights in a 10-year deal, speculation has been rampant about their next move in the soccer streaming market. There is little doubt Apple would be interested in Premier League/EFL rights and money is not a barrier for the cash-rich company.

2028 is a long way away when you consider how quickly the landscape of tv/streaming changes, not to mention the advancements in technology. The Premier League has a good relationship with NBC/Peacock and the same can be said with the EFL and ESPN. But with the money that Apple can bring to the table, they cannot be discounted as a serious contender for the rights. And we shouldn’t ignore the likes of Amazon or even Netflix who have not hidden their desires to enter the live sports business in the US.

Exposure to Lower League Clubs

For EFL sides, especially in the second-tier Championship, this could provide more exposure in a growing market. Matches drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers on cable TV would bring attention most EFL clubs have never experienced before.

Several clubs attracting investment from American owners could stand to benefit even more from the raised profile. Wrexham has seen a surge in Stateside interest since being purchased by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds and being featured in the docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham.” Other teams like Sunderland, which is owned by billionaire businessman John Phelan, have been the subject of popular behind-the-scenes documentaries distributed by ESPN and Netflix. More American EFL club owners and investors will see the value in their ventures rise if new broadcasting deals facilitate increased fandom from across the Atlantic. This could also mean more American investors entering the fray to purchase EFL clubs.

He says it needs modernization in the streaming era. Cue’s vision for the future involves starting from the fan experience and using technology to enhance broadcasts. Addressing the real problem

This potential change comes as the Premier League faces mounting pressure to scrap the long-standing 3 p.m. blackout on Saturday afternoons. Currently, no Premier League matches air live on TV in the UK between 2:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. local time on Saturdays. This rule prohibits fans in the UK from watching any of the traditional 3 p.m. kickoffs unless they attend the match in person.

The 3 p.m. blackout exists to protect attendance at lower-league games. For instance, if a fan cannot stay home to watch other Premier League games, they could go to their local club in person. The proposal for four Sunday afternoon matches starting at 7 a.m and ending at 3:30 p.m. ET dramatically shakes up the Premier League’s traditional weekend broadcast schedule. Currently, Sundays tend to feature just two to three Premier League fixtures. Those typically are at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m ET. Adding two extra Sunday slots (7 a.m and 1:30 p.m. kickoffs) increases the number of weekend matches broadcast in the UK. In the US, we get access to every game regardless.

According to reports, the additional Sunday games also allow more matches from the Women’s Super League and EFL Championship to move. They can take advantage of the vacant 3 p.m. local time slot. This yields increased exposure to both competitions.

This scheduling conflict would likely have a detrimental impact on Premier League viewership and fandom in the USA. Any matches starting Sunday after 1:00 p.m. ET will be in direct conflict with the NFL. There is no guarantee Apple can generate sufficient revenues from sports subscriptions to justify the substantial upfront costs. For now, sports leagues seem eager to have tech platforms bid up rights values and traditional networks do not perceive tech giants as a major threat. Ultimately, this deal’s impact would come down to how Apple executes on integrating ESPN into its ecosystem. But the prospect of these two titans joining forces illustrates the rapidly evolving nature of live sports in the streaming era.

Since the 2003-04 campaign, the Champions League consisted of a group stage involving 32 teams drawn into eight groups of four teams. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stages. This format succeeded the second group stage phase that was in place from 1999 to 2003. The round-robin group stage has provided many iconic moments over the years. Clubs from England, Spain, Italy and Germany dominated this phase. The biggest criticism of the current format has been the lack of jeopardy in later group stage matches as the top teams often qualify early.

UEFA Champions League embracing new format after this season

From 2024-25 onward, the UEFA Champions League will have 36 teams in one single league. Organizers draw clubs into four seeding pots. Then, they play two teams from each pot in a single league table.

Therefore, each club plays eight matches, four home and four away. It is worth noting that these matchups are not the same teams. Instead, the Swiss model ensures each team plays eight group-stage games against eight different opponents.

All 36 teams will battle in one unified league table. Only the top 8 teams advance directly to the last 16. Clubs finishing between ninth and 24th position compete in a two-legged playoff to determine the remaining 8 spots in the last 16. No teams will drop into the Europa League at this stage.

The knockout stage will retain its current two-legged format. However, there are proposals to eventually replace the semi-finals with a ‘Final Four’ tournament in one host city. Again, those are just rumblings. For at least the 2024/25 campaign, the round of 16 through the semifinals are two-legged ties. Then, the Final is a one-off affair.

Allocation of spots in the Swiss model

UEFA is distributing the four extra spots as follows:

• One place to an additional domestic league champion through the ‘Champions Path’
• One place to the league ranked 5th in UEFA coefficients (currently Eredivisie)
• Two places to leagues with the best collective performance in Europe the previous season (likely Premier League + another top league)

This means the Premier League could have 5 clubs in the competition regularly from 2024. Qualification remains merit-based, with no historical or legacy spots for big clubs.

Criticism and Concerns

The expanded Champions League format has its share of critics across Europe. For example, there are far more matches. In addition to each team playing two additional ‘first-round’ games, the clubs finishing ninth to 24th play two more games on top of that. Therefore, one club may play eight ‘league’ matches. Then, it will play two more just to get to the round of 16. In other words, a team goes from playing six group-stage games in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League to playing 10 before the round of 16.

Additionally, top teams should qualify fairly easily, at least for the playoff round. The more games played reduce the likelihood of costly slip-ups in the league phase. Therefore, the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League may have reduced parity in the initial phase. Consequently, it sets up better matches in the playoff and knockout rounds.

Finally, UEFA may make a slippery slope out of adding more teams. If the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League allotted more teams, the clubs added would have included Liverpool, Atalanta and Marseille. Each of those has made regular appearances in the UEFA Champions League in recent seasons.

A major shift that will have to prove itself

Nonetheless, UEFA maintains the Swiss system will create more high-profile matches between top teams and generate 30% more revenue from broadcasting and sponsorship deals. While not as radical as a European Super League, the new Champions League model marks a major shift from the classic group stage format fans have relished since the 1990s. This season will be the last chance to enjoy that familiar setup before the Swiss revolution arrives next year.

In the crucial US market, beIN SPORTS holds the rights to the French league in 2023/24. However, beIN SPORTS’ distribution in the USA has come into question recently. Its position as the Ligue 1 broadcaster is uncertain beyond the current deal. With the expiry of this deal, the LFP sees an opportunity to substantially grow the value of media rights in a key growth market when it goes to tender. Currently, LFP values international broadcast rights at $85 million per season. The LFP is aiming to at least triple the value of Ligue 1’s international rights.

Therefore, LFP president Vincent Labrune set an ambitious overall target of surpassing $1 billion for domestic and international rights combined.

The LFP’s new five-year approach with Ligue 1 international rights

To drive up interest, the LFP is auctioning Ligue 1 domestic and international rights simultaneously over the same 5-year period from 2024-2029. This move provides greater stability and visibility for potential bidders. The simplified tender process, with just two lots on offer for domestic rights, is also designed to maximize revenue potential. The premium package includes the first picks from each matchday and digital rights, while the second package comprises additional matches.

Plenty of players for domestic rights

Long-time domestic rightsholder Canal+ has emphasized the value of digital rights and could potentially partner with recent French entrant DAZN, which has launched itself domestically in collaboration with Canal+. A joint bid from the pair is one possibility for the premium package. Amazon Prime Video, which scooped up rights following the withdrawal of Mediapro in 2020, is expected to be in contention again. BeIN Sports, despite only having rights to matches sub-licensed by Canal+ domestically, could look to acquire full rights internationally.

Other potential bidders include Apple TV+, which recently acquired MLS rights. Apple has, or had, links with both the Premier League and the Bundesliga. Ligue 1 could be a natural step into European soccer. Also, Warner Bros Discovery is a potential home. One notable absence will be Mediapro, after the fallout from its aborted Ligue 1 deal in 2018.

With ambitious revenue goals, LFP chief Labrune will be hoping increased global interest in French football will drive up the value of media rights worldwide. Capturing the potential of key markets like the US will be vital if the LFP is to hit its financial targets.

CAF signed on with beIN in 2017. The contract ran through 2028, and it covered top competitions. For example, beIN had the broadcast rights to the Africa Cup of Nations, CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. This deal extended to 40 countries, including the United States.

In a letter dated Sep. 1, 2023, CAF notified beIN SPORTS that it was immediately canceling the deal over alleged contractual breaches. For example, CAF claims beIN owes nearly $80 million in unpaid broadcast fees. beIN disputed this claim. It states the issues arising from COVID-19-related scheduling changes to major tournaments justified withholding some payments.

In a letter to CAF officials, beIN CEO Yousef Al-Obaidly said the company “does not accept this termination” and will “take all necessary legal steps” to challenge it.

Not the first time CAF has canceled a broadcast contract

This is the second time CAF canceled a major media rights contract in recent years. In 2019, a $1 billion deal with French company Lagardere Sports was terminated. Ultimately, that cost CAF $50 million in damages.

The beIN cancellation leaves CAF without a major international broadcaster just months before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Ivory Coast. It also casts uncertainty over coverage of CAF club competitions like the Champions League. That starts in November.

CAF and BeIN have had a long relationship

BeIN has held CAF broadcast rights since 2009 and frames itself as a longtime financial backer of African football. In his letter, Al-Obaidly said beIN has invested “hundreds of millions” in rights fees and broadcast production. The Qatari company warned that creating the new African Super League, reportedly organized with backing from FIFA, has “hugely damaging” effects by competing with existing CAF club tournaments.

For its part, CAF claims beIN violated the contract by failing to make payments. However, beIN insists it is open to talks and continuing its “long-term financial commitment to African football.”

Turbulent times at CAF

The cancellation comes at a turbulent political moment for CAF. In recent years, the confederation has come under increased oversight by FIFA, including the appointment of FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura as a ‘General Delegate for Africa’ in 2019 when the Lagardere deal was canceled. Some have suggested outside pressure, rather than prudent financial planning, is behind CAF’s decision-making around its biggest media contracts. This risks further damaging CAF’s revenues if the beIN cancellation results in another costly legal dispute.

Serie A has struggled to attract satisfactory bids for the next media rights cycle. The league set a target of around $1.25 billion per season. However, the offers from DAZN, Sky Italia and MediaForEurope fell well short.

A key factor driving this aggressive stance is the financial disparity between Serie A and the leading European leagues. The English Premier League secured a domestic deal worth over $3 billion annually for 2022-25. Even Spain’s La Liga and the German Bundesliga earn over $1.5 billion and $1.2 billion respectively from their domestic rights. Serie A clubs are feeling the pinch from earning almost $1 billion less.

The league believes its commercial value merits deals on par with La Liga and the Bundesliga. Launching a direct-to-consumer platform would be a bold step toward actualizing that value.

Going direct-to-consumer a viable option

The lower-than-expected bids prompted Serie A to consider a drastic approach. It may launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming platform. According to Serie A chief executive Luigi De Siervo, the league has the infrastructure ready to distribute matches directly. Speaking at an event in Milan, he said “We have the structure to offer [matches] directly to viewers….we are considering this option.”

With bids not meeting expectations, De Siervo insisted Serie A will not accept unsatisfactory offers. However, if the offers remain inadequate by the Oct. 15 deadline, the nuclear option of a Serie A streaming service appears likely. This represents a major shake-up. Serie A would bypass established broadcasters and back its ability to generate higher revenues independently.

While risky, the strategy is not without merit

Serie A can leverage its large global fanbase, the presence of elite clubs like Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan and star players like Lautaro Martinez and Rafael Leão. An owned-and-operated service offers full control over production, distribution and monetization. If marketed and priced effectively, a streaming platform could appeal to local and international audiences. And by owning a direct relationship with customers, Serie A keeps all the revenue rather than sharing it with broadcast partners.

There are challenges in taking this direct-to-consumer approach. Launching and operating a streaming video service from scratch is complex and cost-intensive. And Serie A would face intense competition for viewers’ time and subscription dollars. But the league seems willing to make this bold bet to transform its broadcasting model, back its product value and maximize revenues. If domestic bids remain low, Italian soccer fans may soon have a Serie A streaming service to call their own.

As it has become tradition, the qualifications take place in a league-style competition. All nations play home and away against each opponent. The top six teams in qualifying earn an automatic spot in the 2026 World Cup. The seventh-placed team earns a spot in an intercontinental playoff.

For viewers in the United States, Fanatiz has coverage of seven out of the 10 games in the first two matchdays in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying. Over the first two matchdays (as of press time), both the games involving Argentina are not on Fanatiz, nor is the Brazil game against Bolivia on matchday two. However, the streaming service does have all seven of the other games.

Matchday #1 (Sep. 7 & Sep. 8)

Paraguay’s game against Peru kicks off the competition in a match that could have plenty of significance. One or both of these teams could end up fighting for a direct berth or playoff spot. MLS fans will see some familiar faces in the lineup. For example, Raúl Ruidíaz (Seattle Sounders), Miguel Araujo (Portland Timbers) and Wilder Cartagena (Orlando City) represent Peru. For Paraguay, Vancouver’s Andrés Cubas plays alongside Braian Ojeda of Real Salt Lake and Diego Gomez of Inter Miami.

Anything but a Colombia win against Venezuela would be a surprise. Venezuela has had its share of surprise results in qualifying. Yet, Venezuela is a bubble team in this qualifying process.

Lionel Messi leads World Champions Argentina in its defense against Ecuador. Argentina and Brazil are a “class above” in South America, and this qualification cycle should only prove that to remain true. Ecuador gets a tough start to its campaign. A trip to Argentina precedes a home match against Uruguay. In the end, Ecuador should be one of those nations that should find its way to the World Cup, and it will give Argentina difficulty in this opener.

Friday kicks off with what is easily the best match – at least on paper – with Uruguay versus Chile. Veterans such as Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez earned call-ups for Chile in this window. Uruguay has no lack of talent either. However, the losses of De Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo to injury could be noteworthy.

Matchday No. 1 closes off with Brazil hosting Bolivia. Last season’s top finisher in qualifying is likely the favorite to do it again. That makes a Brazil win the most likely outcome. But, this is why we love soccer. You never know when those surprises will come.

Matchday #2 (Tuesday, September 12th)

Bolivia vs Argentina opens Matchday No. 2. On paper it may look like a walkover for the visitors but Bolivia is a tricky place to visit due to the high altitude. In the last cycle of qualifiers, Argentina had to work hard to come from behind to grind out a 2-1 victory. And in the 2018 qualifier in La Paz, Bolivia beat Argentina 2-0.

Ecuador’s games against Uruguay seldom fail to give us thrills. For the 2022 qualifying cycle, Ecuador defeated Uruguay 4-2 in Quito. Another high-altitude stadium that leaves visiting teams gasping. Expect a very exciting encounter.

If Venezuela wishes to be a participant in the 2026 Finals, this is the type of match they need to win. Paraguay did walk away with 1-0 victories in their last 2 visits here during World Cup qualification and will be gunning for 3 in a row.

In another high-caliber matchup, Chile and Colombia are two teams that should participate in the next World Cup. But it’s exactly these matches that produce the drama that is felt down the road in qualification.

Brazil has made it a habit to walk away from Peru with all 3 points in their pockets. After facing Bolivia in matchday No. 1, it seems Brazil picked up the easiest of tasks when it comes to the opening 2 matchdays of the 2026 World Cup qualifying in CONMEBOL.

Thursday

Group B features table leaders France hosting Ireland. France sits atop the group with maximum points after four matches. Meanwhile, Ireland has had a disappointing start to its campaign. The Irish lost to both France & Greece while grabbing their lone three points versus lowly Gibraltar. Meanwhile, second-place Greece travels to the Netherlands. This is only the Netherlands’ third group match, and a win is imperative if they wish to finish at least second in the group and ensure a place in the finals. 

In Group E, Czechia can extend its lead if it beats Albania at home. This is a big test for Albania to see if it truly could fight for a spot in the finals. Poland hosts the Faroe Islands. Robert Lewandowski and company are targeting a win to keep pace with the Czechs in the battle for automatic qualification. Poland comes off a shock loss to Moldova and needs a convincing win to get their campaign back on track. 

Group G has likely the most interesting match of the day. Serbia hosts Hungary, both locked on 7 points from 3 matches on top of the group. In the other match, Lithuania welcomes Montenegro looking for their first win in the group. Montenegro must see if it can stay in the hunt for at least third place for a playoff spot. 

Group H sets up to be the most interesting of all the groups. Finland and Kazakhstan find themselves as joint co-leaders and they meet each other in Kazakhstan. Slovenia has a tricky home tie versus Northern Ireland and must win to keep pace with those leaders. Denmark, in the meantime, should easily grab the 3 points at home to San Marino. That can help the Danes catch up with whomever drops points in the Kazakhstan match against Finland.

Friday –

In Group A, Spain travels to Georgia where it should grab all three points and join the hunt for an automatic place in the finals. Spain’s loss to Scotland puts it in a situation where it cannot afford to slip up. Group leaders Scotland travel to Cyprus to try to continue their perfect qualification campaign. Cyprus is winless in the group. 

In Group D, leaders Turkey host Armenia and, at least on paper, are favorites to maintain the top spot. But after wins against Wales & Latvia, Armenia cannot necessarily be taken for granted. Turkey has 6 points from 3 matches and will not want to slip up to keep the top slot. In the other match in the group, Croatia is only playing its third qualifying match due to participation in the Nations Cup Final 4 and take on Latvia who are in last place without a point after 3 matches.

In Group J, leaders Portugal travel to second-placed Slovakia in what is the clash of the day. Portugal has a perfect 12 points from four matches while Slovakia is two points behind the group leaders. Surprise of the qualifications, Luxembourg, hosts Iceland in a pivotal match that has a big impact on who finishes third in the group. Bosnia & Herzegovina cannot afford to slip up in their trip to Liechtenstein as they need all three points to keep pace with Luxembourg.

Saturday –

Group C leaders England will face a tough test as they travel to Poland to face second-placed Ukraine. England owns a perfect record after facing each of the 4 other group nations while Ukraine sits on 6 points after 3 matches. A win for England would give them a firm grip on the top spot, but Ukraine will be aiming for revenge for the 2-0 defeat at Wembley. In the other Group C match, North Macedonia hosts Italy who both sit on 3 points but Italy has a match in hand. This is the debut for new Italy manager Luciano Spalletti who will want to impress and start Italy’s march to keep up with group leaders England.

Austria and Belgium are starting to run away in Group F, leaving Sweden to do a lot of work to catch up with the leaders. Azerbaijan’s game against Belgium opens the day as Azerbaijan looks to play spoiler. Sweden will get their chance to get some of those much-needed points as they travel to Estonia.

Group I is turning into a three-horse race with Switzerland currently leading the pack with 10 points, followed by Romania with eight and Israel with seven. Kosovo hosts Switzerland; Andorra plays host to Belarus; leaving Romania vs. Israel as the choice match in the group. The winner of that match would firmly make themselves favorites to join Switzerland in the finals, barring any major surprises in Kosovo.

Real Madrid remain perfect

Real Madrid came from behind to beat Getafe 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu thanks to another goal from Jude Bellingham. Getafe initially stunned the champions by taking a surprise lead in the opening minutes through Borja Mayoral. The striker pounced on a defensive mistake from Fran Garcia to round keeper Thibaut Courtois and slot home. Madrid struggled to create many clear chances in the first half, with Luka Modric going closest when his diving header was well saved. But they started the second half strongly and equalized through Joselu, who hammered home from close range after a mix-up in the Getafe defense. As the game entered its final stages, Madrid laid siege to the Getafe goal which took it’s toll in the 87th minute when Soria spilled Vazquez’s drive and Bellingham reacted quickest to rifle in his fifth goal in four games.

It was a vital three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as they made it four wins from four games to stay top of the table.

Barcelona struggle but overcome

Robert Lewandowski’s late penalty earned Barcelona a hard-fought 2-1 La Liga win at Osasuna on Sunday evening. The Polish striker converted from the spot in the 85th minute after Alejandro Catena grabbed his arm inside the penalty area. Catena was sent off before Lewandowski scored the winner. Barça had taken the lead just before half-time when defender Jules Koundé headed home from a corner. But Osasuna equalised in the 76th minute through a superb curling strike from Chimy Ávila that went in off the post. The defending champions rallied to earn victory late on and are third in the table on 10 points, level with Girona, who continued their impressive start as Portu marked his return with a late winner against Las Palmas. Both teams trail leaders Real Madrid by two points.

Postponement

Sunday’s match between Atlético Madrid and Sevilla was postponed due to the extremely high risk of flooding in Madrid. The decision to call off the game was made at lunchtime, with the capital braced for record rainfall.

Elsewhere

Real Sociedad and Granada went on a rare goalfest in La Liga on Saturday with Sociedad pulling off an impressive 5-3 win. Cadiz and Celta managed 3 goals each in their wins over Villareal and Almeria, respectively. Sevilla’s postponement leaves them at the bottom of the table and the only La Liga team with no points.

Milan clubs set the pace

Inter Milan maintained their perfect start to the Serie A season with a comprehensive 4-0 home win over Fiorentina on Sunday. France forward Marcus Thuram scored his first goal for the club since his summer move from Borussia Monchengladbach, heading home Federico Dimarco’s cross midway through the first half. Lautaro Martinez doubled Inter’s lead shortly after the break when he was played through by Thuram. Hakan Calhanoglu made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after Thuram was fouled in the area by Fiorentina keeper Pietro Terracciano. Martinez grabbed his second late on with a neat first-time finish from Juan Cuadrado’s low cross. The win leaves Inter level on points with city rivals AC Milan at the top of the table after three games. In Saturday’s action, AC Milan maintained their 100 percent record with an impressive 3-1 win away at Roma. Last season’s star Rafael Leao was again on target for the Rossoneri. The two Milan giants face each other in their next match after the international break in what promises to be an intriguing early battle for supremacy.

A crowded field behind the leaders

Juventus are just two points behind the leaders in third after a 2-0 win at Empoli. Brazilian defender Danilo opened the scoring midway through the first half with a close-range finish from a corner. Federico Chiesa wrapped up the points with eight minutes left, racing through to round keeper Guglielmo Vicario and score his second goal of the campaign.

Lazio provided the shock result of the round with a 2-1 road win at Napoli. Lazio took the lead in the 30th minute thru a Luis Alberto strike but Napoli equalized 2 minutes later thru Piotr Zielinski. But Lazio took control in the second half and walked away with all 3 points leaving Napoli with 6 points, 1 point behind Juventus & Lecce and tied with Atalanta & Verona

AS Roma woes continue

Roma’s home defeat to AC Milan have left them third from bottom of the table with a single point from 3 matches. Mourinho’s men look disorganized and slow on the pitch. Romelu Lukaku came on as a substitute in the 70th minute and showed a little bit of his potential but much more will be needed, not only from him, but from a whole squad that is looking directionless at the moment. Cagliari and Empoli anchor the table at the bottom. Empoli not only looking for their first points but also their first goal of the season.

Union Berlin’s home run ends

RB Leipzig ended Union Berlin’s club record 24-game unbeaten run at home in the Bundesliga with an emphatic 3-0 away win. Benjamin Sesko scored twice after coming on as a substitute to seal Leipzig’s first ever league victory at Union’s Alten Försterei stadium. Xavi Simons opened the scoring for Leipzig with a spectacular long-range strike early in the second half. Union were then reduced to 10 men when new signing Kevin Volland was sent off midway through the half. With Union pushing for an equalizer, Leipzig capitalized on the counterattack as Sesko netted a quickfire brace in the closing stages. Despite the loss, Union fans gave their team a standing ovation after the final whistle in recognition of their record-breaking home streak coming to an end. Union find themselves level on points with Leipzig with 6 points alongside 4 other clubs in a tight race.

Leverkusen stay perfect under Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen made it three wins from three games under new coach Xabi Alonso with a 5-1 demolition of Darmstadt. Striker Victor Boniface was the star of the show again, netting two goals to take his tally to four in three matches. The Nigerian’s brace as well as an assist extended Leverkusen’s perfect start to the season. 

Bayern perfect as well

Bayern Munich made it three wins from three with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Leroy Sane and teenager Mathys Tel scored in the second half to overturn Gladbach’s 1-0 halftime lead. Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel was critical of his side’s first half display but praised their “best 45 minutes of the season” after the break. This sets up a mouthwatering top of the table clash with Bayer Leverkusen after the international break.

Heidenheim claim historic first Bundesliga point

Promoted Heidenheim secured their first ever Bundesliga point in a thrilling 2-2 draw away at Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund raced into a two goal lead courtesy of Julian Brandt and Emre Can but Heidenheim staged a stunning second half comeback. Goals from Eren Dinkci and Tim Kleindienst earned the plucky underdogs a share of the spoils at Signal Iduna Park. Heidenheim almost snatched a shock win late on as Dortmund’s sloppy play opened the game up. But Heidenheim were content with their historic point against one of Germany’s giants.

Newcomers Darmstadt at the bottom

Darmstadt are finding life in the Bundesliga after 3 rounds to be very tough. They have conceded 10 goals while only scoring two. A home match versus fellow strugglers ‘Gladbach after the Int’l Break may be the tonic they crave to get their first Bundesliga points.

Arsenal with late thriller 

Arsenal left it late to see off rivals Manchester United 3-1 at the Emirates. The Gunners fell behind early but equalized through captain Martin Odegaard. Declan Rice, Arsenal’s big money summer signing, popped up in the 96th minute to put them ahead before Gabriel Jesus sealed the points. It is the second time in two seasons Arsenal have scored crucial late goals to beat United.

Liverpool made it look easy

Liverpool swept aside Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield. The Reds blitzed Villa early with two goals inside the opening 22 minutes from new signings Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Mohamed Salah added a third to continue his stunning start amid speculation over his future. Liverpool have emerged as City’s most likely challengers after three straight wins.

Son inspires free-scoring Spurs

Son Heung-min was the star of the show as Tottenham romped to a 5-2 demolition of Burnley. The South Korean bagged a hat-trick with Romero and Maddison completing the scoring. Under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Spurs have started the season strongly. They have scored 11 goals in their opening 4 games, matching Manchester City and 1 goal behind the league-leading score tally of Brighton. With the goals flowing and the wins stacking up, Spurs have established themselves as top four contenders again after falling away last term.

Chelsea’s striking woes

Chelsea’s transfer spending has exceeded £1 billion since Todd Boehly’s takeover, but they are still struggling for goals. The Blues succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat against Nottingham Forest, drawing another blank.

Despite splashing out huge fees, Chelsea lack a reliable central striker and it’s a problem new manager Mauricio Pochettino must quickly resolve.

At the bottom

Sheffield United and Everton played out an exciting match which saw both clubs gain their first single points of the season. This leaves Burnley and Luton Town at the bottom with no points but with a game in hand as their meeting was postponed due to the construction of Luton’s stadium.

Betting on the future

The club has done this by getting loans using future revenue streams as collateral. Specifically, Barcelona has leveraged future ticket sales, media rights deals, and assets such as its production company Barça Studios to secure financing.

For example, Barcelona sold 25% of its LaLiga TV rights for the next 25 years to Sixth Street for €267 million ($317 million). This provided immediate funds for transfers like Robert Lewandowski by essentially mortgaging future broadcast earnings. Additionally, the club sold 24.5% stakes in Barça Studios, which produces media content, to raise around €200 million ($207 million) in cash now.

Barcelona is betting these media assets will appreciate in value, allowing them to repay loans down the road. This creative financing strategy gives Barcelona an influx of money right now to spend big on transfers and salaries. But the loans must eventually be paid back over a period of many years by generating revenues from sources such as ticket sales, broadcast rights, and Barça Studios growth. Essentially Barcelona has exchanged long-term financial flexibility for short-term spending power.

Barcelona buying new players? How we got here

Barcelona got in this tough financial situation mostly because they have spent more money than they’ve brought in the last few years. COVID-19 also hurt their finances. The debt grew from €217 million in 2014 to over €1 billion by 2021. Revenue also dropped from over €840 million in 2019 to €631 million in 2021 as the pandemic hit.

To navigate Financial Fair Play regulations limiting spending to 70% of revenue, Barcelona has turned to novel financing arrangements. The club initially reduced its wage bill by renegotiating contracts of veterans like Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba. More crucially, Barcelona convinced new signings to accept lower wages than they earned at previous clubs. For example, Lewandowski reportedly earns under €10 million ($10.8 million) at Barcelona versus €20 million ($21.7 million) at Bayern Munich. Other new arrivals like Raphinha also took pay cuts.

No room for errors in the short term

This high-risk financing strategy has given Barcelona payroll flexibility now, but greatly reduced its long-term spending power. The bets Barcelona placed on its media assets rising in value may not pay off down the road when debts come due. While creative financing has allowed player purchases despite financial fair play rules, years of austerity likely await. Debt repayments will restrict Barcelona’s budget just when these star signings exit their prime. The club essentially must achieve immediate on-field success and revenue growth to justify mortgaging its future. Past transfer missteps suggest Barcelona could be saddled with debts without sufficient income if signings flop or finances stagnate. With little room for error, Barcelona is gambling that short-term gains justify long-term pain. The coming years will reveal whether selling the future to improve today represents a masterstroke or a reckless mistake.

Bad business or future blueprint for other clubs?

While Barcelona’s financial maneuvers are clearly risky, they represent an innovative model for how other football clubs could leverage future assets to raise capital for present needs. If Barcelona’s gamble pays off and star signings catalyze increased revenues that allow debt repayment, this creative financing could be a blueprint for clubs seeking flexibility despite financial constraints. The potential success of mortgaging future earnings to fund current transfers may inspire other teams to follow suit. So Barcelona’s high-stakes approach could shape football finance for years to come by providing a template, if successful, for clubs to sign top talents by essentially borrowing against tomorrow.

Tottenham, Chelsea & Dortmund miss out

Brighton struck a surprise loan agreement with Barcelona for the 20-year-old forward. The season-long deal does not include an obligation to buy. Brighton will cover a large portion of Fati’s salary per Barca’s demands.

The loan is a major coup for Brighton as it prepares for its first European campaign. It was reported that discussions were had with Tottenham, Chelsea as well as Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. The loan will allow Fati to continue his development while potentially facilitating moves for Barcelona targets Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo.

Ansu Fati joining Brighton after injuries and Barca finances

Fati burst onto the scene for Barcelona as a 16-year-old in 2019, becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer. Initially, Fati formed a strong connection with Lionel Messi. Barcelona faithful often saw Fati as the long-term heir to Messi’s throne at Camp Nou.

However, two serious knee injuries derailed Fati’s progress over the last two seasons. He has struggled for regular playing time under Xavi and finds himself behind the likes of Raphinha, Gavi and Robert Lewandowski in the pecking order. In 2021 he signed a new contract with Barca through 2027 with a €1 billion buyout clause. However, Fati’s own father has expressed frustration over his lack of minutes under manager Xavi.

For Barcelona, loaning out Fati would help ease their financial issues and even possibly open space for new arrivals. However, losing one of their most gifted academy graduates would be a major blow, even if only temporarily.

The Catalan club’s president Joan Laporta recently reaffirmed his faith in Fati.

“Ansu is extraordinary, we are all in love,” Laporta said. “He is just another member of the squad, who we want to improve. We are very happy that he is still with us.”

Yet, Barcelona’s financial condition forced Laporta’s hand with a sizeable loan offer too good to pass up at this time.

Minimal time left in this transfer window

With the transfer window set to slam shut on Sep. 1, it is time for Fati to resolve his future. A move to Brighton should give him plenty of playing time so long as he stays injury-free. Brighton, along with Premier League sides Liverpool and West Ham are heading to the Europa League Group Stage next month which will give Ansu Fati plenty of opportunity to display his talent not only in the UK but in Europe as well.

Pulisic an instant star at AC Milan

Milan has started the 2023-2024 Serie A season strongly, with new signings Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek making instant impacts. Pulisic has scored in his first two games, against Bologna and Torino. This exhibits his versatility by playing out wide and through the middle. Loftus-Cheek has also impressed in central midfield, bringing energy and line-breaking passes.

Milan’s transfer strategy focused on young players with resale value. It spent moderate fees on players like Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah. While it is very early, Milan’s squad looks deeper and more flexible this season. Manager Stefano Pioli has more tactical options. If the quick integration of new signings continues, Milan should challenge for the Serie A title again.

Napoli doing what they do best: winning

Napoli continued their perfect start to the Serie A season with a 2-0 home win over 10-man Sassuolo on Sunday, with Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Di Lorenzo scoring the goals. Osimhen netted a penalty before Sassuolo’s Maxime Lopez was sent off. Kvaratskhelia, who came on as a substitute for his season debut after injury, provided the assist for Di Lorenzo’s goal to seal the victory. This is a good start for new coach Rudi Garcia. Still, we are yet to see how Napoli can deal with tougher competition as the season wears on.

Inter Milan earned a comfortable 2-0 away win against newcomers Cagliari in Serie A on Monday, with first-half goals from Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez sealing the victory. Maurizio Sarri has a lot of talent at his disposal. Lazio will get its share of victories. But, the loss of Milinkovic-Savic is having a very negative impact on the club.

Favorites to be tested next round

AC Milan has a very interesting trip to AS Roma on Friday. Roma just completed the signing of Belgian Romelu Lukaku who may feature in the match. As mentioned earlier, Napoli will host Lazio who, despite its slow start to the season, is always a tricky opponent. Inter Milan will host Fiorentina who have already found the back of the net 6 times in 2 matches. Hellas Verona, which has managed a perfect start to the season, travels to bottom club Sassuolo.

LaLiga weekend roundup from matchday three

Atletico puts on a show

Atletico Madrid produced its biggest-ever away win in LaLiga by demolishing city rivals Rayo Vallecano 7-0 on Monday. The visitors raced into a 3-0 first-half lead through goals from Antoine Griezmann, Memphis Depay and Nahuel Molina. They ruthlessly put the game beyond doubt after the break. A four-goal outburst in 13 minutes completed the rout. Alvaro Morata netted twice along with strikes from Angel Correa and Marcos Llorente.

The emphatic victory moves Atletico up to second in the table on 7 points, just two behind leaders Real Madrid. It was a harsh reality check for Rayo after two opening wins. Atletico’s sublime attacking display highlighted the gulf between the Madrid clubs.

Vini Jr. injury highlights another Real win

Real Madrid earned a third straight LaLiga win by beating Celta Vigo 1-0 away from home, but it was a difficult victory. New signing Jude Bellingham scored the winner in the second half to maintain his hot start after Rodrygo missed a penalty. Real suffered an early blow when Vinicius Jr. went off injured after just 15 minutes. Despite Celta starting brightly and having a goal disallowed by VAR, Real ground out the victory.

But question marks remain. For instance, Vinicius has a vague timetable for return. Carlo Ancelotti must figure out how to work Real without its Brazilian star. Rodrygo’s penalty miss raises questions as to who should take them. Bellingham’s goal-scoring form continues to be a positive. Regardless, injuries are a concern for Real as it aims to keep this perfect start going.

Barcelona win in the thriller of the weekend

Defending champions Barcelona emerged 4-3 winners in a dramatic, high-scoring encounter away at Villarreal on Sunday. Barcelona’s 16-year-old academy product Lamine Yamal starred. He provided assists for Gavi and Robert Lewandowski’s winning goal. He also slammed the woodwork twice on his attempts. Remarkably, Villarreal came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 early in the second half. Then, late goals from Ferran Torres and Lewandowski swung the game back in Barca’s favor. Yamal impressed again after becoming Barca’s youngest-ever player and starter recently.

His performance highlighted La Masia’s talents, as Xavi’s side held on despite a scare to claim a vital victory that keeps them two points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid after three games.

Sevilla with three straight losses to open its season

Sevilla’s poor start to the LaLiga season continued with a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Girona on Saturday. Sevilla went behind in the first half after failing to clear a Girona corner. They equalized right before halftime, but Girona retook the lead early in the second period. Despite Sevilla dominating possession and having 22 shots to Girona’s 8, they couldn’t find an equalizer. A potential late penalty was also waved off by VAR.

Girona held on for a valuable away victory, condemning Europa League champions Sevilla to three straight defeats to start the season. The loss piles pressure on manager José Luis Mendilibar as Sevilla sits bottom of the table without a point after three games.

Bundesliga weekend roundup: Matchday two

Bayern Munich continued its winning start as Harry Kane scored a brace in the side’s 3-1 victory away at Augsburg. Kane confidently converted a penalty before adding a second with a composed finish. The Englishman is now at three goals in this infantile Bundesliga season. However, a late concession against Augsburg ensured Bayern would not go to sleep at the top of the table. Even though it is only two games into the season, a different club is in pole position.

Despite going down to 10 men, Union Berlin produced a stunning comeback to hammer Darmstadt 4-1 away from home. Robin Gosens marked his second Bundesliga appearance with a brace after Brenden Aaronson’s red card. Union’s set-piece prowess proved too much for Darmstadt. Unbeaten after two games, Urs Fischer’s side looks well-equipped to balance European and domestic duties.

Bochum held Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in the Revierderby, caught off guard by its fired-up opponent. Bochum’s intensity surprised Dortmund in the first half, taking a deserved lead through Kevin Stöger. Dortmund improved after the break and equalized through Donyell Malen. Still, captain Marco Reus admitted Dortmund still has much room for improvement.

RB Leipzig showed it has successfully replaced departing stars by demolishing Stuttgart 5-1. New signings Lois Openda, Xavi Simons and Christoph Baumgartner all impressed, while Dani Olmo’s hot scoring streak continued. Outclassed Stuttgart did threaten a comeback from 3-0 down, but Christopher Nkunku slammed the door shut with two late goals.

Bayer Leverkusen made it two wins from two with an emphatic 3-0 victory away at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Early goals from summer signing Victor Boniface and Jonathan Tah had Leverkusen in control before Boniface grabbed his second after the break. With new recruits Jonas Hofmann and Alejandro Grimaldo claiming assists, Leverkusen firmly signaled title ambitions.

Winless pack at the bottom

At the other end of the table, Werder Bremen remains stuck at the bottom after two matches without scoring. A last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Freiburg means Bremen are still searching for its first point since promotion. Conversely, Hoffenheim fielded their oldest-ever starting XI (29.7 years). Still, it held off Heidenheim 3-2. Köln is also still without a point after two games.

For Round No. 3, one clash stands out as particularly intriguing – Union Berlin will host RB Leipzig. This battle between two sides who have started the season impressively poses an early test for Union’s title credentials, and an opportunity for Leipzig to make a statement after rebuilding in the summer. With both teams undefeated and among the frontrunners after two matchdays, their upcoming showdown already feels like a pivotal moment in the shaping of this Bundesliga campaign.

Here is what this weekend of Premier League games means in a matchday roundup.

Premier League roundup of title contenders

Manchester City beat Sheffield United 2-1 to make it three wins from three. Erling Haaland, who already has two goals this season, added to his tally by heading in Jack Grealish’s cross against Sheffield United. However, Kyle Walker’s mistake allowed Jayden Bogle to equalize late on for the Blades. City showed their champion mentality though. Rodri fired in a thunderous winner just minutes later. With manager Pep Guardiola absent after back surgery, this was not City’s best performance. Winning ugly is the sign of potential champions.

Arsenal drew 2-2 at home to Fulham, a disappointing result after beating Crystal Palace last week. Bukayo Saka made amends for gifting Fulham an early goal by equalizing from the penalty spot. Eddie Nketiah then put Arsenal ahead after a nice play from Fabio Vieira. However, with Fulham going down to 10 men, Joao Palhinha equalized late on from a corner. The Gunners have started brightly but dropped points here may cost them in the title race.

Liverpool came from behind to beat 10-man Newcastle 2-1 away. New signing Darwin Núñez made a substantial impact off the bench. The Uruguayan scored an equalizer and the winning goal after Virgil van Dijk’s red card. This was a massive result for Jurgen Klopp’s side who had been struggling at St James’ Park. Núñez’s goals answered questions about whether he can replace Sadio Mane. Alisson also made a wonder save to keep Liverpool in it.

Other clubs pick up results in matchday three

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes’ penalty saw Manchester United complete a comeback from 2-0 down to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford. Chelsea also got its first win under Mauricio Pochettino, beating Luton 3-0. Raheem Sterling grabbed a brace as the Blues looked much improved.

Strugglers Everton lost 1-0 at home to Wolves despite dominating chances, increasing pressure on manager Sean Dyche. West Ham was in that relegation scrap with Everton last season before pulling away late. After three games, the Hammers briefly topped the table on Saturday following a surprise 3-1 win away at Brighton. Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and new boy James Ward-Prowse got on the scoresheet.

After three games, Man City remains the only team with a 100% record. West Ham, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal and Brentford remain undefeated. At the other end, Everton sits bottom with just a single point so far.

Three host nations are receiving automatic places in the final tournament. Consequently, 208 nations are vying for 45 slots in North America in the summer of 2026. The distribution across the Confederations has a new look with so many teams. The AFC gets eight spots, CAF has nine and CONMEBOL has six. UEFA leads the way again with 16 spots allotted and Oceania will have a guaranteed representative in the tournament’s group stage. Six teams from North America will compete, and that includes the three host nations. Additionally, two more nations will qualify via a six-team tournament. That features various runner-up finishers from all the confederations except for UEFA.

South America kicks off World Cup 2026 qualification process

On Sep. 7, CONMEBOL starts its qualifying tournament as it did for several World Cups prior. A 10-team league-style competition has each nation play the others home and away. Previous versions of the competition determined four qualifying nations and one playoff participant. This time around, the top-six nations qualify directly. Then, the seventh-placed nation plays in FIFA’s six-team playoff. The first matchday features the following fixtures:

Colombia — Venezuela

Argentina — Ecuador

Uruguay — Chile

Following CONMEBOL’s kickoff of qualifiers, AFC will follow with qualifiers beginning during the October 2023 FIFA International Break. During the November 2023 International Break, African (CAF) qualifiers kick off. CONCACAF nations will begin their journey to World Cup 2026 in March 2024 while UEFA will start its qualifying campaign in March 2025.

Sacrificing quality for quantity?

The debate about a 48-team World Cup has been ongoing. It is the length of the final tournament itself that is more problematic than the actual number of nations. The increase in the number of matches from 64 to 104 could bring fatigue to fans. Less concerning is the number of nations as the quality gap between nations has steadily decreased over the years. We can expect upsets during the tournament. A much bigger concern is in the qualifying process itself – particularly in South America. With all but the bottom 3 teams either directly qualifying or making the playoffs in CONMEBOL, we will likely see many matches in the final rounds of qualifying meaning very little if anything. That is bad news for fans who have enjoyed some incredible matches in CONMEBOL qualifying in the past.

Coverage of this season’s Champions League season on Paramount+ has been exceptional. The streaming platform aired matches from each of the three preliminary rounds of the competition. Matches from these early rounds are not part of the rights deal CBS Sports signed with UEFA. Meaning, CBS dished out extra money to bring to us fans early round action as those rights are sold by individual host clubs.

There is no information on CBS’s payment for these games. They cannot be overly expensive. Regardless, Paramount and CBS deserve credit for purchasing these matches for fan consumption in the US. None of the other networks chose to show any matches as they were eligible to purchase just as CBS did. For example, ESPN, FOX, beIN or others could bid on these matches.

The broadcasting contract for the Champions League starts with the playoff round. However, the other two UEFA club competitions start with the actual Group Stage matches. Individual clubs sell the rights to the Europa League and Europa Conference League playoff round matches. Therefore, they could technically be shown on any network. But, like the Champions League, there does not seem to be any interest outside of CBS to show these matches.

Twenty-six of the 32 participants in the Group Stage of the Champions League have a confirmed spot. The final six spots come from the upcoming playoff round. The ties are as follows:

The NASL was still struggling for relevance, with matches attracting only a few thousand fans. Pele’s signing immediately boosted the Cosmos’ prestige. The US men’s and women’s national teams are consistent fixtures in their respective World Cups. And soccer trails only American football and basketball in youth participation.

At 35 years old, Messi joined Inter Miami six months removed from leading Argentina to glory at the 2022 World Cup. His signing has already led to increased ticket sales, sponsorship deals, and greater media coverage for Inter Miami. It has also boosted subscribers and viewership for Apple’s MLS streaming package. Through six matches so far, Messi has scored nine goals and helped lead Miami to the final of the Leagues Cup tournament. Messi’s low center of gravity, tight dribbling, and split-second decision-making helped him dominate and produce jaw-dropping moments in the modern era.

Pele planted the seeds that Messi now grows in American soccer

Pele’s superstardom almost 50 years ago was enough to attract fans to a fledgling league. Now, Messi’s presence accelerates the commercial growth of an established league and teams. The NASL did grow after Pele’s departure. It was not a question of Pele but a poorly run league structure. Yet, the youth participation it created was the seed that ultimately led to the MLS era.

The increased interest and revenue generated by Messi provide long-term benefits for continued league investment and development. Beyond their impact on American soccer, Pele and Messi’s lasting legacies will be their otherworldly skills that revolutionized the sport. They set new standards of greatness in their respective eras.

Initially, Pele paved the roads. Now, Messi’s arrival signifies American soccer truly entering the global mainstream. It represents the fruits of decades of growth. Both men have the unmatched ability to transcend even their soccer talents to advance the sport globally. For American soccer, the king and the GOAT are two regal pillars of the beautiful game.

Napoli is defending a title, but it is not the favorite

Defending champions Napoli will face a tough task trying to retain their crown under new manager Rudi Garcia. Key departures like Kim Min-jae have weakened the squad. Still, stars like Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are still on board. Therefore, Napoli remains a contender to repeat. Garcia must quickly implement his tactics and style to keep Napoli in the title hunt.

Inter Milan is determined to make amends after falling short in each of the last two seasons. New signings like Davide Frattesi and Marcus Thuram have reinforced the squad, but losing Andre Onana is a big blow. Romelu Lukaku’s future is very much in the air. Inter must rely on Lautaro Martinez to regain his best form up front. Inter is the top candidate to push Napoli this season. Manager Simone Inzaghi is under pressure to deliver a Scudetto challenge.

AC Milan heavily invested this summer to correct last season’s disappointing title defense. High-profile additions like Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah have raised expectations at the San Siro. Milan possesses a deep squad overflowing with young talent. It is in a strong spot to compete for the Serie A crown again under Stefano Pioli.

Fourth spot provides best preview of upcoming Serie A season

The race for the final Champions League spot promises to be fierce. Juventus lost key veterans like Giorgio Chiellini and Paulo Dybala but new arrivals like Timothy Weah could provide a spark. However, question marks remain around the future of Dusan Vlahovic up front. If he stays, Juve has enough quality to finish in the top four under Massimiliano Allegri. Lazio will rely heavily on striker Ciro Immobile to bang in the goals with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic departing. Maurizio Sarri’s tactical acumen makes them a danger, especially with shrewd additions like Daichi Kamada boosting the squad.

Jose Mourinho is in the last year of his AS Roma contract and needs a top-four finish to stay in the capital. But a lack of summer investment has left the squad weaker and over-reliant on Tammy Abraham’s goals. Atalanta cannot be ruled out after signing promising talents like El Bilal Toure up front, but losing a star like Rasmus Hojlund is a blow. Gian Piero Gasperini will have them organized and tough to beat as always.

Relegation candidates

At the bottom, newly promoted sides like Frosinone, Genoa, and Cagliari face a monumental battle to avoid relegation. Last season’s struggling clubs Spezia and Lecce are likely to get drawn into the survival scrap if they do not start the season strongly. It should be a tense fight to stay in Serie A down to the wire. Meanwhile, clubs like Fiorentina, Bologna, Sassuolo, Monza, Torino, Udinese and Empoli should have enough talent to avoid getting into the mud of relegation but are still well short of being able to push for European spots.

The 2023-24 Serie A campaign has all the makings of an unforgettable season. With the Milan clubs looking to dethrone Napoli, and historic giants Juventus, AS Roma and Lazio eager to rejoin the title conversation, the Scudetto race is nearly impossible to predict. Add in the always-dramatic battles to qualify for Europe and avoid relegation, and fans are in for nine thrilling months of calcio action.

This season, the league may be wider open than ever.

Bayern remains the German king

Bayern Munich will be looking to extend their record streak to 12 consecutive league titles. However, this Bayern side has seen some major upheaval. Thomas Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann toward the end of last season. After replacing a pair of executives, Bayern spent big to revamp the squad.

The German giants finally secured the signing of Harry Kane to lead the attack. Kane’s goals will be crucial to Bayern’s hopes, as Robert Lewandowski’s absence was sorely felt at times last campaign. Meanwhile, the additions of Kim Min-jae in defense and Konrad Laimer in midfield strengthen areas of need. Tuchel needs to quickly shape this new-look Bayern into a cohesive unit. Two clubs are waiting to push Bayern to break its hegemony.

Dortmund and Leipzig provide preview of challenge in the Bundesliga season

Dortmund pushed Bayern to the end last season. It looks to do one better this time under manager Edin Terzic. The loss of midfield talisman Jude Bellingham is a blow. However, new signings Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer provide energy and quality in the engine room. Dortmund also boasts an exciting crop of young attackers, including Youssoufa Moukoko, Karim Adeyemi and Gio Reyna. Terzic will need to get those talented teenagers to click over a full season. They can link up with those experienced stars Marco Reus or Mats Hummels. The quality is there to take the title race down to the wire again.

RB Leipzig also harbors ambitions of a genuine title challenge after an impressive second half of last season. Leipzig invested well to replace departing stars like Christopher Nkunku and Konrad Laimer. In their place stepped striker Lois Openda and midfielder Nicolas Seiwald, among others. Retaining midfielder Dani Olmo is also a major boost. The experienced Rose has molded a talented squad that plays exciting, high-energy football. Six wins in the last six games of the season demonstrate that. That is what helped Leipzig to its second DFB-Pokal. RB Leipzig could emerge as surprise contenders for a first-ever Bundesliga crown.

Contenders for the Champions League

Further down, there will be an intriguing battle for the Champions League place behind the top three. Union Berlin will try to balance domestic and European commitments in their remarkable rise under Urs Fischer. Useful additions like Lucas Tousart and Brenden Aaronson should aid their push. Bayer Leverkusen, revitalized under coach Xabi Alonso last season, recruited well, signing striker Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka. Their attacking talents like Moussa Diaby and Patrik Schick make them a threat. Meanwhile, consistent Freiburg and coach Christian Streich cannot be discounted after another solid top-six finish last time out. The trio all have genuine hopes of returning to the Champions League next season if any of the favorites falter.

Middle of the pack and a crowded relegation battle

In the bottom half, there will likely be a tense relegation battle involving several clubs. Promoted side 1. FC Heidenheim could face an immediate return to the second tier, along with the likes of VfB Stuttgart, TSG Hoffenheim, FC Augsburg, VfL Bochum and SV Darmstadt 98. Stuttgart’s struggles in recent seasons leave them vulnerable, while Heidenheim and Darmstadt may find the step up difficult. Established sides like Hoffenheim, Augsburg and Bochum will also be desperate to avoid the drop, making it a nervy fight for survival at the foot of the table.

Amongst the teams not mentioned, the likes of Mainz, Cologne, Gladbach, Frankfurt, Wolfsburg and Bremen seem destined for mid-table mediocrity. They may offer the odd surprise result but ultimately lack the quality to reach the upper echelons or get dragged into a basement battle. Expect them to provide entertaining matches, but finish tucked safely in the middle when all is said and done.

If previous campaigns are anything to go by, it should be a season to savor for German football fans. In the US, all matches will be available on ESPN+ with select matches making it to ESPN, ESPN2 as well as the ABC Network.

It shapes up to be another epic battle between the league’s eternal rivals. Atletico Madrid, though, is there to push these two after strengthening its ranks. Further down the table, the likes of Real Sociedad and Real Betis set their sights on Champions League qualification.

The newcomers this season are Granada, Alaves and Las Palmas, which are not exactly strangers to the top flight. Still, each will need to work uphill to avoid relegation. Between the fight for the title and the quest to stay up, there are plenty of storylines to follow.

Barcelona has tough task of defending LaLiga title

Barcelona will face the unique challenge of playing home games away from Camp Nou this season during stadium renovations. The Catalans have lost club legends Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. All the while, Ousmane Dembele’s impending exit leaves a hole in the attack. The headline arrival is Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer from Manchester City. At 32, he is a different profile from the departed Busquets. If Frenkie de Jong stays, he could form a midfield trio with Gundogan and Pedri.

This works behind a front three of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Ansu Fati. Depth remains a concern, but if the new signings click, Barca could defend its title under Xavi’s management.

How Real Madrid can replace Benzema up front

Real Madrid will be eager to reclaim the LaLiga title after finishing second to rivals Barcelona last season. Los Blancos have reinforced their squad with the marquee signing of Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund for €103 million. The English midfielder adds quality and energy to Real’s engine room alongside Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Eduardo Camavinga. Carlo Ancelotti also brought in defender Fran Garcia from Rayo Vallecano and striker Joselu on loan from Espanyol to provide depth.

However, the big question mark remains how they will replace Karim Benzema’s goals and link-up play. The French striker left for Saudi Arabia. Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo form a new-look frontline. Also, there is that move for Kylian Mbappe still in the works.

Any hope for Atletico?

Atletico Madrid finished just a point behind Real Madrid last campaign after an impressive run post-World Cup. Antoine Griezmann was the star of the show. He could be again with several key departures like Matheus Cunha and Renan Lodi.

Diego Simeone has focused on strengthening the defense by signing Caglar Soyuncu, Javi Galan, and Cesar Azpilicueta. Real Betis and coach Manuel Pellegrini quietly built one of LaLiga’s most consistent teams recently with three straight sixth place finishes. The arrivals of Marc Bartra, Luiz Felipe and Willian Jose offset the loss of Sergio Canales, while Nabil Fekir is still the main man in attack. Betis won the Copa del Rey in 2022 and another cup run paired with a top-six finish would mark a successful season.

Further down the pecking order, Valencia, Celta Vigo, Getafe, Osasuna, Sevilla and Mallorca will likely be competing for mid-table positions.

Celta Vigo could be a team on the upswing under the experienced Rafa Benitez, who led them to survival last season. The addition of veteran winger Carles Perez and the emergence of young midfield talent Gabri Veiga gives Celta the potential to improve on its 13th-place finish.

Getafe will again rely on a stingy defense marshaled by keeper David Soria to aim for a mid-table spot, while Osasuna‘s high-tempo style under Jagoba Arrasate makes them tough opponents on any given day.
