As we reach the near end of what has been an exhilarating month, Brazil and Netherlands face each other today in the Third Place Final, with pride as the only prize to play for.

Where to watch –

The third-place match kicks off at 4 PM EST/1 PM PST, and this is where viewers in USA can tune in for the game –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Djamel Haimoudi (Algeria)

Starting lineups –

Brazil: César – Maicon, Silva, Luiz, Maxwell – Gustavo, Paulinho – Ramires, Oscar, Willian – Jô.

Holland: Cillessen; Kuyt, De Vrij, Vlaar, Martins Indi, Blind; Clasie, Wijnaldum, Sneijder; Robben, Van Persie.

Brazil –

Brazil have approached every game in this tournament with supreme vigor and passion, which was depicted perfectly in the charged up and patriotic fashion of singing their national anthem. Today however, a much mooted Brazilian team could be seen, who would still be coming to terms with the 7-1 mauling they were subjected to by Germany.

With nothing to play for, Brazil would at least be doing their best to make sure that the host nation finishes 3rd, rather than 4th.

Netherlands –

The Dutch were outdone by Argentina on penalties, which often is the cruelest way of going out of a competition. Louis van Gaal would be in-charge of Netherlands for the final time today before he takes over the reigns at Manchester United, and will want to end his tenure on a positive note by seeking salvation for his semi-final heartbreak.

The Oranje army have entertained us throughout the tournament and would want to head home on the back of a win.

Do you think this match has any significance to either teams? Would they be motivated enough to give their best performance? Do share your views with us below.

Following last night’s catastrophic display by Brazil, Argentina are the only South American representative remaining in the tournament. They will want to maintain that status after today’s game against the Netherlands.

Where to watch –

The game kicks off at 4 PM EST/1 PM PST, and this is where viewers in USA can catch the game –

Referee –

Cuneyt Cakir (Turkey)

Starting lineups –

Holland starting XI: Cillessen, Kuyt, Blind, Vlaar, De Vrij, Martins Indi, De Jong, Wijnaldum, Sneijder, Robben, Van Persie

Argentina starting XI: Romero, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Garay, Rojo, Enzo Pérez, Biglia, Mascherano, Lavezzi, Messi, Higuaín

Netherlands –

After watching their European counterparts Germany demolish hosts Brazil 7-1 last night, Netherlands would want to replicate that suffering on Argentina and set up an all European final on Saturday.

A masterclass substitution from Louis van Gaal in the last round to bring on Tim Krul was vindicated by his heroics in the penalty shootout victory against Costa Rica. However, the incoming Manchester United manager could possibly be without his captain Robin van Persie, who is having some stomach pains and faces a late fitness test.

Argentina –

They knocked out dark horses Belgium last time around by a solitary Gonzalo Higuain strike. There’s welcome news for them in the form of the return of Sergio Aguero, who is fit again and is expected to start alongside Lionel Messi again after his injury lay-off.

Brazil go into today’s crucial World Cup semi-final clash against Germany with a big cloud of uncertainty hovering over the entire nation at the worst possible time. Will the Selecao be able to overcome the absence of their national hero, Neymar?

Where to watch –

Brazil vs Germany kicks off at 4 PM EST/1 PM PST today, and this is where people in the United States can watch the game:

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Marco Rodriguez (Mexico)

Starting lineups –

Brazil: César; Maicon, Dante, Luiz, Marcelo; Gustavo, Fernandinho, Hulk, Oscar, Bernard; Fred.

Germany: Neuer, Hoewedes, Hummels, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Ozil, Klose, Muller, Lahm, Kroos, Boateng.

Statistics –

Brazil only have to look as far as their head-to-head record against Germany to seek inspiration. They have beaten Germany on 12 occasions previously, while the Germans have only won a paltry 4 times against the South Americans. That could give Brazil some respite and confidence going into tonight’s blockbuster showdown.

Taking the respective teams’ overall showing in the tournament, both have averaged around 12 chances per game, which have led to 2 goals in each game with just over 50% shooting accuracy. That shows there’s not much to separate these two sides in attack.

The cumulative defensive figures tell a different story altogether. The Brazilians have made 75 interceptions so far in the tournament, which is almost twice than that of Germany’s 39. However with the absence of Thiago Silva, that number could not increase by much today.

Things start to get serious now as we enter the World Cup quarterfinals, which kick off with the meeting of two old rivals, France and Germany.

Where to watch –

The 12 PM EST/9 AM PST kick-off can be watched at –

Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Nestor Pitana (Argentina)

Starting lineups –

France: Lloris (c), Debuchy, Evra, Varane, Sakho, Cabaye, Valbuena, Benzema, Griezmann, Matuidi, Pogba

Germany: Neuer, Howedes, Hummels, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Ozil, Klose, Muller, Lahm (c), Kroos, Boateng.

Statistics –

Germany dominated Algeria in their last game, which was evidenced by their 29 attempts on goal throughout the match. Then enjoyed almost two-thirds of the possession as well and had an impressive 82% pass completion rate.

As for France, they had a comparatively stiffer outing against Nigeria who restricted them to just 9 shots on target. They even slightly edged France in possession with 51% – something which they will have to work on against Germany.

France and Germany have met on 25 occasions previously, and it is the French who lead the head-to-head record with 11 wins compared to Germany’s 8. While comparing their respective numbers this World Cup, there is not much to separate these two teams.

While Germany have so far scored 9 goals to France’s 8, and boast a superior shot accuracy % (70% compared to France’s 60%), France have more attempts on goal per game (19.3 to Germany’s 16.5). Both have the same pass completion rate of 80% as well.

Players to watch –

The Germans were made to sweat in the Round of 16, but it was due to the composed and collected Mesut Ozil who turned out to be the difference. He will have a major role to play today as well.

It was the young Paul Pogba who opened the scoring for France last time, apart from having a fantastic overall performance in midfield. He will have his work cut out for him in halting the likes of Ozil and Kroos (if they are not one of those affected by the flu and manage to play today).

Prediction –

Expect it to be a battle that will be won in midfield. Khedira, Ozil and Kroos will have an intense battle against Pogba, Valbuena and Cabaye. Though Germany are slight favorites to win this game, I expect it to be an intensely fought game and one which could possibly go to penalties. In the end, I feel Germany will emerge triumphant.

France 2-2 Germany (after extra time)

Germany win 4-3 on penalties.

Agree with my prediction? Do you feel Germany will be impacted by the flu? What are your thoughts on this big match, and who do you think will win? Tell us below!

Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Jonas Eriksson (Sweden)

Starting lineups –

Argentina: Romero, Garay, Zabaleta, Gago, Di Maria, Higuain, Messi, Mascherano, Rojo, Fernandez, Lavezzi.

Switzerland: Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Rodriguez, Schar, Djourou; Inler, Xhaka, Behrami, Shaqiri; Mehmedi, Drmic

Argentina –

The South Americans romped through the group stages with 3 wins out of 3 and are one of the strongest contenders for winning the trophy. Their star studded attack has been impressive thus far and they will be on a mission to further add to their goal tally.

Switzerland –

Having been thrashed 5-2 by France in their 2nd group game, they bounced back in style with a 3-0 demolition of a sorry Honduras side to set up today’s clash. Their 7 goals scored thus far in the tournament will give them further belief going ahead.

Statistics –

Switzerland’s attacking statistics are promising. Taking an average of their 3 games played each, they beat Argentina in chances created per game (15 compared to Argentina’s 13) and shot accuracy (56% compared to Argentina’s 43%). Switzerland have even scored one more goal than them till now.

However it seems like they suffer from big game nerves. Two goals out of the 6 they have conceded so far have been a result of erroneous defending. They came up short against France and were battered; the same could repeat yet again against another big name like Argentina.

Players to watch –

By the looks of it, Lionel Messi has led Argentina into the Round of 16 all by himself. His 4 goals have been crucial, and he will be the biggest threat to Switzerland.

As for the Swiss, winger Xherdan Shaqiri is in fine form. His brilliantly taken hat-trick against Honduras will give three reasons for the Argentine defenders to worry.

Prediction –

Switzerland have the potential to play some impressive football, provided they do not suffer from big game nerves like they did against France. If they start the game on the front foot today, they could potentially create huge problems for Argentina. But will it be enough to curb Messi and co.? I don’t think so. Though I expect it to be a hard fought affair, I see Argentina coming through unscathed.

Argentina 2-1 Switzerland.

Disagree with my opinion? What is your prediction for this game? Tell us below.

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Sandro Ricci (Brazil)

Starting lineups –

Germany: Neuer; Mustafi, Mertesacker, Boateng, Höwedes; Lahm, Schweinsteiger; Özil, Kroos, Götze; Müller.

Algeria: Mbolhi, Ghoulam, Belkalem, Halliche (c), Lacen, Feghouli, Slimani, Soudani, Taider, Mandi, Mostefa

Germany –

The Germans have put on a brilliant display of free-flowing attacking football in the group stages, and have a handful of goals to show for their efforts. They come into today’s game high on confidence, and as the favorites to go through to the last 8. They will have to make do without Lukas Podolski though, as the Arsenal man is forced to sit this one out through injury.

Algeria –

They would just be glad to have reached this far in the tournament after they finished as runners up behind Belgium in Group H. With the odds heavily stacked against them, they would be hoping and praying that they can cause a major upset today.

Statistics –

Surprisingly enough, there is not much to separate the two teams when it comes to pure numbers. Germany only just manage to edge out Algeria when it comes to chances created per game (8 chances compared to Algeria’s 7) and shot accuracy (Germany’s 55% to Algeria’s 50%). Algeria have scored 6 goals so far, just one shy of Germany’s 7.

As for the back-line, Germany have let in 2 goals so far, exactly half the number of goals conceded by Algeria.

Players to watch –

Striker Thomas Muller is a potent threat for the Germans up front. His 4 goals so far has put him in the reckoning for winning the Golden Boot for the second time running, and his wonder goal against USA in their final group game will give him ample confidence to further add to his goal tally.

As for Algeria, Islam Slimani is their vital outlet. He scored a goal apiece in the first and second group games, and will be hoping that he can score again tonight.

Prediction –

Germany are favorites to progress to the quarter-finals, and I fully expect them to do just that without breaking much of a sweat. I do not see Algeria causing such a big upset.

Germany 3-0 Algeria

Have some interesting insights to share? Do you see Algeria shocking the Germans? Do tell us below.

In what many expect to be one of the matches of the weekend, Mexico takes on Netherlands in Fortaleza today. It’s a Noon ET/9am PT kick-off.

Where to watch –

Viewers from USA can tune in to these following for the 12 PM EST/9 AM PST kick off

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Pedro Proenca (Portugal)

Starting line-ups –

Holland: Cillessen, Verhaegh, Kuyt, Vlaar, De Vrij, Blind, De Jong, Wijnaldum, Sneijder. Van Persie, Robben

Mexico: Ochoa, Rodriguez, Salcido, Marquez, Herrera, Layun, Dos Santos, Moreno, Guardado, Peralta, Aguilar

Netherlands –

The Dutch’s clean sweep in the group stages sees them come into today’s game brimming with confidence against Mexico, who finished as runners-up in their Group. They dispatched big names like Spain and Chile earlier in the competition, and will be hoping that the Mexican team will be a relatively easier test.

Mexico –

The Group A runners-up behind Brazil would be unnerved by the Dutchmen, as they themselves are coming into this game on the back of a solid 3-1 win against Croatia in their final group match. More of the same from them could pose some problems for Netherlands.

Statistics –

Looking at Mexico’s performances in the group stages, they boast a higher passing game than Netherlands (307 successful passes to 246 for the Dutch, and 81% of passes completed against Netherlands’ 77%).

However, Louis van Gaal’s men are way ahead where it matters. They create nearly 10 chances per game, while Mexico create just 8, while at the same time have averaged over 3 goals per game, which beats Mexico’s average of over 1 goal/game.

Mexico’s shooting accuracy lags at a dismal 36% compared to Netherlands’ 68%. This is something which needs to be worked on in order to improve their offensive record.

Players to watch out for –

Captain Robin van Persie serves his one match suspension and is now back to lead the Oranje today. He has been on song so far, and will pose a serious threat to the Mexican defense, and to goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, whose heroics against Brazil have made him an instant household name.

While on the other hand, it is his Manchester United team-mate Javier Hernandez who could upset the Dutch. He scored in Mexico’s 3-1 win against Croatia and would be looking to find the back of the net once again.

Prediction –

Mexico have done well to reach the Round of 16 in the tournament, but they come up against a Dutch competition who have simply grown in confidence with every passing game. I expect the Dutch challenge to be a bit too much for Mexico to deal with today. I see Netherlands progress to the quarter-finals.

Netherlands 3-1 Mexico.

Tell us who do you think will stand out today in the ‘Comments’ section below.

We end today’s action with France taking on Ecuador with the opportunity on the line for Ecuador to advance to the next round.

Where to watch –

For viewers keen to catch this game from USA, this is where they can tune in.

English language: ESPN2 and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes or ESPN Deportes+

Referee –

Noumandiez Doue (Ivory Coast)

Starting lineups –

Ecuador XI vs France: Domínguez; Paredes, Guagua, Erazo, W. Ayoví; Noboa, Minda, A.Valencia, Montero; Arroyo, E.Valencia.

France XI vs. Ecuador: Lloris; Sagna, Koscielny, Sakho, Digne; Pogba, Schneiderlin, Matuidi; Sissoko, Benzema, Griezman.

Ecuador –

With Switzerland hot on Ecuador’s heels, they will have to match their result tonight if they wish to go onto the Round of 16. Switzerland face Honduras in the other game and are expected to get the 3 points. It is not that straight forward for Ecuador though, who face a comparatively much stiffer opponent in France.

France –

Les Blues are flying high after two explosive performances which has already booked their place into the knockout stages. There have been goals galore for Didier Deschamps’ men and they will be in no mood for complacency, as they will be hungry for more – making Ecuador’s task all the more difficult.

Statistics –

The French have been banging in the goals with ease, as they boast an average of 4 goals per game this World Cup. On taking an average over the two games, France’s attacking numbers are exactly twice as good as Ecuador’s. They have had 20 shots on target per game, compared to Ecuador’s 10. They have also created 15 chances per game, which doubles Ecuador’s 7.

Players to watch –

A certain Enner Valencia has been a pleasant surprise package for Ecuador, having scored 3 goals in his 2 outings. He would be hoping to score again tonight in order to help his team go through.

Ecuador however will have a major problem to deal with, that being of forward Karim Benzema. The Real Madrid front man has been in explosive form, who has also scored 3 goals in 2 games.

Prediction –

Ecuador need to match Switzerland’s result in order to progress. With Switzerland expected to win against Honduras, I do not see Ecuador managing to beat France. I am going for a draw between them coupled with a win for Switzerland, and Ecuador to then unfortunately crash out of the competition.

Ecuador 2-2 France

Do you agree with my scoreline? Feel that there will be a twist in this group? Tell us in the ‘Comments’ section below.

Today’s second round of matches kicks off with Honduras facing Switzerland. The Swiss can advance with a win today if Ecuador is unable to do the business against France.

Where to watch –

For viewers in USA, this is where the match can be streamed –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes or ESPN Deportes+

Referee –

Nestor Pitana (Argentina)

Starting lineups –

Switzerland XI vs. Hondurus: Lichtsteiner, Benaglio, Schar, Djourou, Rodriguez; Inler, Xhaka, Behrami, Shaqiri; Mehmed, Drmic.

Hondurus XI v Switzerland: Valladares; Figueroa, Bernardez, Beckeles, J.Garcia; Palacios, Claros, B.Garcia, Espinoza; Bengtson, Costly.

Honduras –

Following two consecutive losses, Honduras’ hopes of qualifying to the next round are virtually over. Even though they can still mathematically qualify, it is out of their hands and they would be playing for mere pride today.

Switzerland –

The Swiss are still in the reckoning for a berth in the Round of 16, and a win tonight coupled with a loss for Ecuador in the other fixture today could see them through. They would be trying their best to get the 3 points, and then hoping for a slip up from Ecuador.

Statistics –

Honduras’ defense has let them down, as they have leaked in 5 goals in their 2 games, and by the looks of it, they might just let a few more in today as well against a Swiss outfit who still have something to play for.

Swiss have been purposeful, yet not very fruitful going forward. They have created an average of 15 chances per game and have attempted over 15 shots per game on goal this World Cup. However, their shot accuracy of just 43% is the main reason they just have 3 goals to show thus far.

Players to watch out for –

Bayern Munich winger Xhedran Shaqiri could take advantage of Honduras’ relatively weak defense, and could hurt them out wide, while Stoke City’s Wilson Palacios would have to deal with his threat.

Prediction –

With Switzerland still having a chance to qualify, I expect them to be at their attacking best and perhaps manage to score a few goals past Honduras’ defense.

Honduras 0-3 Switzerland

While Argentina are already through to the next round, a draw will be good enough for Nigeria to advance to the next round. But even if Nigeria lose today, they could still advance if Iran fails to beat Bosnia or Iran doesn’t better Nigeria’s goal difference.

Where to watch –

The match begins at 12 PM EST/9 AM PST, and this is where viewers in USA can watch the game –

Referee –

Nicola Rizzoli (Italy)

Starting lineups –

Nigeria: Enyeama, Ambrose, Yobo, Omeruo, Oshaniwa, Musa, Mikel, Onazi, Babatunde, Emenike, Odemwingie.

Argentina: Romero, Zabaleta, Garay, Fernandez, Rojo, Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria, Aguero, Messi, Higuain.

Nigeria –

Despite having 4 points out of a possible 6, they are still not safe from elimination as a heavy loss against Argentina, coupled with a win for Iran could see them crash out of the World Cup. Therefore, they will be desperate to at least pick up a point today.

Argentina –

The South Americans seem to have risen after a long period of dormancy. Despite being frustrated by Iran in their last match, they managed to win which has sealed their passage into the Round of 16. It is a possibility that we could see a reshuffled outfit, given the fact that Argentina’s fate has already been decided.

Statistics –

Nigeria could take heart from the fact that they have not conceded a single goal yet in the tournament, and would be hoping that they can stop Messi and co. and keep an impressive 3 straight clean sheets.

As for Argentina, they have a much higher pass completion rate (83% compared to Argentina’s 90%) and have created more changes per game (14) than Nigeria (10). It is likely to be a case of Nigeria’s determined defense against the silky and confident attack of Argentina.

Who to watch out for –

Hands down, Nigeria’s primary threat and their biggest challenge would be stopping Lionel Messi. The Barcelona star has been a game changer in both of Argentina’s matches so far, scoring the decisive goal on both occasions.

It is expected that he will be heavily marked by Nigeria, whose chief duty could rest with defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel, on whom this task would be entrusted.

Prediction –

Nigeria have done well in maintaining 2 clean sheets out of two, but I doubt that they will make it 3, especially against the likes of Messi, Aguero and di Maria.

I am looking at a 2-1 win for Argentina.

What do you think the score will be? Will Messi score again? Do Comment below and join in the discussion.

Japan –

The Japanese come into this game hoping and praying that Colombia will be in a laid back mood. However, their destiny is out of their hands now, and for them to progress, they will be hoping that Greece can somehow manage to beat Ivory Coast in today’s other fixture.

Colombia –

2 wins out of 2 games has seen them reach the Round of 16 already. Today’s game is a dead rubber for them, and could be a possible opportunity for them to tinker around with their formation and personnel. Seeing a much changed Colombia side could be a possibility.

While analyzing the two teams over the course of their first 2 games, the Japanese have made more successful passes and a higher pass completion rate than Colombia. While the amount of shots taken on goal are nearly on par, however Japan’s shot accuracy is a poor 40% compared to Colombia’s 60%. That’s one reason as to why Japan have also been so goal shy, as they have only scored 1 goal in 2 matches, compared to Colombia’s 5.

Defensively as well, Colombia have only let in just 1 goal compared to Japan’s 2.

Man to watch –

Winger James Rodriguez has had a great World Cup, scoring in both his games thus far. He will be looking to make a hat-trick, and will be an obvious threat for Japan.

The onus on making and scoring goals for Japan will be on playmaker Keisuke Honda, who has scored Japan’s only goal in the World Cup.

Prediction –

Japan need a win tonight and hope that Greece manage to beat Ivory Coast, in order for them to progress. Will it happen? I have serious doubts. I do not expect them to win tonight, let alone take things onto the Greece vs Ivory Coast game.

Japan 0-2 Colombia

Do you feel that Japan can cause an upset? Will they manage to improve on their poor shooting and scoring record in today’s game? Will someone apart from Honda step up?

Will Colombia send out a new look side? Will Rodriguez manage to score 3 goals in 3 games? Tell us in the Comments below!

With second place in the Group still up for grabs for both the teams, this might be a highly entertaining game.

Where to watch –

The match kicks off at 4 PM EST/1 PM PST, and this is viewers in USA can catch this game –

English language: ESPN2 and WatchESPN
Spanish language: UniMás, Galavision and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes or ESPN Deportes+

Referee –

Carlos Vera (Ecuador)

Starting line-ups –

Greece: Karnezis, Maniatis, Manolas, Samaras, Kone, Karagounis, Salpingidis, Torosidis, Lazaros, Sokratis, Cholevas.

Ivory Coast: Barry; Aurier, Kolo Touré, Bamba, Boka; Tioté, Yaya Touré, Serey, Kalou, Gervinho, Drogba.

Greece –

A win for the Greeks can see them eclipse Ivory Coast to that 2nd spot in the table and lead them into the Round of 16. Thus, they will have no option but to go for the win.

Ivory Coast –

They only need to avoid a defeat tonight, which will be enough for them to sustain the challenge put up by Greece. A draw would see them through at the expense of their opposition today.

Statistics –

Greece need to outscore Ivory Coast if they want to go through. However, their primary concern should be that of scoring a goal to begin with. They have not scored a single goal this competition, which makes things all the more difficult for them tonight.

While Ivory Coast have scored 3 goals in their 2 games, they have also let in 3 at the same time. That could give Greece some hope going into this game.

Men to watch out –

The responsibility of scoring goals rests on the shoulders of attackers Georgios Samaras and Konstantinos Mitroglou. They will have to bring their best game out if Greece are to beat Ivory Coast and qualify.

Gervinho has shone for Ivory Coast. His 2 goals in 2 games prove that, and the Roma attacker could be a handful for the Greek defense.

Prediction –

I do not see Greece breaking their jinx up front and scoring today. I expect Ivory Coast to stroll towards a low scoring, but an easy victory.

Greece 0-1 Ivory Coast

What is your prediction? Will Gervinho score today too? Share your thoughts with us in the ‘Comments’ section below!

Today’s blockbuster tie brings the ruthless Netherlands against Chile to determine who ends up in first and second in Group B.

Where to watch –

The game kicks off at 12 PM EST/9 AM PST, and if you are currently in USA, this is where you can catch this mega clash –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes or ESPN Deportes+

Referee –

Bakary Gassama (Gambia)

Starting lineups –

Netherlands: Cillessen, Vlaar. De Vrij, Blind, De Jong, Janmaat, Sneijder, Robben (c), Kuyt, Lens, Wijnaldum

Chile: Bravo (c), Mena, Isla, Silva, Sanchez, Vargas, Gutierrez, Medel, Jara, Aranguiz, Diaz

Netherlands –

The 2010 World Cup runners-up started the tournament in style by thrashing Spain 5-1. They followed that up with yet another gutsy 3-2 win over a daring Australian side. With 2 wins out of two, they are at least guaranteed to progress into the next round.

Chile –

The Chileans have been a surprise package this World Cup, who are also on 6 points – on par with their opponents today. Since both the teams are through to the next round, they are simply vying to finish top of the group. They will be in a confident mood, having dispatched Spain away 2-0 in their last match which saw their title defense end unexpectedly early.

Statistics –

Taking an average over the two games they have played, Netherlands have had over 7 key passes throughout the game to Chile’s 5. They have carved out 10 goal scoring chances per game, while Chile have only managed 6. Not only have the Dutch taken more shots (14 per game as per 9 per game for Chile), they also boast a better shooting accuracy (79% compared to Chile’s 60%).

While Netherlands look much superior based on sheer numbers, they will be wary of certain individuals in the Chilean team who can hurt them, like midfielder Arturo Vidal. The Juventus schemer has scored 11 goals from central midfield, which happens to be the highest among both the teams. Also, their center forward pairing have both, scored and created more goals than their Dutch counterparts.

Prediction –

It will be exciting to watch Robben come up against Chilean defenders. Vidal might have a huge role to play in trying to put a halt to the fluent and purposeful Dutch passing, while also try and add to his 11 goals he has scored.

Alexis Sanchez could have some joy out wide, which could be a game-changing aspect. All in all, a hugely exciting game is in prospect, and given the fact that they are both qualified and have nothing to lose, they will play with utmost freedom with nothing held back. I expect a lot of goals to be honest, however fail to pick out a clear winner. I would go for a high scoring draw.

Netherlands 2-2 Chile

Do you feel that these insights are helpful? Have anything to add to them? Do you think there will be someone else who will shine today? Also, do you agree with my predicted scoreline? What do you think will the score be? We want to know! So do share your views with us in the comments section below!

Where to watch –

Referee –

Felix Brych (Germany)

Starting lineups –

Belgium: Courtois, Alderweireld, V Buyten, Kompany, Vermaelen, Witsel, Fellaini, De Bruyne, Mertens, Hazard, Lukaku.

Russia: Akinfeev, Kozlov, Ignashevich, Kanunnikov, Glushakov, Kokorin, Berezutskiy, Shatov, Samedov, Fayzulin, Kombarov

Belgium –

The Belgians, widely considered as the dark horses of this World Cup, got the 3 points in their 2-1 comeback win against Algeria. They currently hold a 2 point gap over their nearest rivals and a win today will guarantee them a place in the top 2. They might have to deal with the absence of captain Vincent Kompany though, who could miss the game due to injury.

Russia –

The Russians were held to a 1-1 draw against Korea Republic, and sit level on points with them. They will attempting to leapfrog Belgium to the summit of the table with a win tonight.

Statistics –

Belgium enjoyed 2/3rds of possession against Algeria and had over 500 passes throughout the game. They will be looking to dominate proceedings today against the Russians as well. It might not be that easy however, as Russia had a solid defensive performance against Korea. They had a higher number of blocks and clearances than Belgium, so the game can more or less come down to the attacking threat of Belgium’s against the defensive might of Russia.

Men to watch out for –

Apart from the obvious threat of Eden Hazard, Belgium benefited from Marouane Fellaini’s introduction too. The Manchester United midfielder came on in the 2nd half and immediately made his mark as his header got Belgium on terms against Algeria and which sparked their comeback. He will hoping to have a similar impact today as well.

As for Russia, Kerzhakov too proved to be a super sub as he came on to restore parity for Russia, who were trailing against Korea before his introduction.

Prediction –

I expect the likes of Hazard, Lukaku and de Bruyne to go all out against Russia, and it could be a case of Belgium’s attack against the Russian defense; but I expect Belgium to come away with the 3 points.

Belgium 2-0 Russia

Ghana face a stern test as they come up against a rampant German outfit. This tie also divides the Boateng family down the middle, as Germany’s Jerome Boateng comes up against his brother Kevin-Prince Boateng, who will be playing for Ghana.

The match kicks off at 3 PM EST/12 PM PST, and for viewers in USA, this is where the match can be watched –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Sandro Ricci (Brazil)

Starting lineups –

Germany: Neuer – Boateng, Hummels, Mertesacker, Höwedes – Lahm, Khedira – Özil, Kroos, Götze – Müller

Ghana: Dauda – Afful, Mensah, Boye, Asamoah – Muntari, Rabiu, Atsu, Boateng – Andre Ayew, Gyan

Germany –

After demolishing Portugal in their opening fixture, the ruthless Germans will come out hungry for more as they will be aiming to make it 2 wins in 2 games. With several of the top teams already clinching their place in the Round of 16, Germany will want to do the same tonight itself, rather than taking things into the final group game against USA.

Ghana –

They were outdone by the United States at the death last time. Their realistic target would now be aiming for that 2nd qualifying spot in the group, but their task is not made any more easier against Germany.

Statistics –

The efficiency of the Germans, which has been worked on and perfected by manager Joachim Loew, was on show against Portugal as out of the 6 chances they created, they dispatched 4 of them in the back of the net. This is in stark contrast of Ghana, who scored just once in the 18 chances they created.

Also, 67% (or every 2 shots out of 3) for Germany were on target against Portugal, while Ghana were languishing behind against USA with an abysmal shooting accuracy of just 19%.

Men to watch out for –

Thomas Muller helped himself to a hat-trick to get his Golden Boot defense off to a flying start, and will be looking to add to his tally tonight. Apart from the Bayern Munich striker, Ghana will also have to contend with the threat of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in midfield.

Germany’s main strength lies in its strong, sublime and pacy midfield, and the task to halt them will rest majorly on the shoulders of Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Prediction –

Judging by the relative ease with which Germany put Portugal to sword, I expect yet another strong performance from them and in the process, seeing a handful of goals and ultimately, 3 points for them.

Germany 3-0 Ghana

Argentina face Iran in an attempt to seal their passage into the Round of 16.

Where to watch –

The match kicks off at 12 PM EST/9 AM PST, and for viewers currently in the United States, this is where you can catch the game –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Milorad Mazic (Serbia)

Starting lineups –

Argentina XI: Romero; Fernández, Garay, Zabaleta, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di María; Agüero, Messi, Higuaín.

Iran XI: Haghighi; Hosseini, Sadeghi, Montazeri, Pooladi; Shojaei, Nekounam, Teymourian, Dejagah, Ghoochannejhad; Hajsafi

Argentina –

Argentina fans were treated to some masterclass by their maestro Lionel Messi who scored one of his trademark goals against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their first match and helped clinch the 3 points for them. Laden in attack, the South American giants will be hoping to score a few more against Iran today.

Iran –

They played out a 0-0 draw against Nigeria and remain 2nd in the table behind Argentina. A draw for them today would indeed be a very good result.

Statistics –

Argentina carved out as many as 10 goal scoring chances and managed to score twice. That will give them more confidence against a relatively weaker Iran outfit, and they will be hoping to bag a few more today.

Iran were wasteful in front of goal against Nigeria as despite creating 7 chances, failed to dispatch any of them away. They will be hoping and praying for a better showing from their attackers this time around.

Men to watch out for –

Messi spells as the obvious danger man, and the Barcelona superstar will again create havoc on the Iranian defense. Fulham’s Ashkan Dejagah, who had a below par game against Nigeria, is Iran’s best hope of having any sort of impact.

Prediction –

With Messi looking revitalized after his goal, he will be raring to make it two goals in two matches, and with the likes of Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria to support him, I expect a slew of goals for Argentina.

Argentina 4-0 Iran

France and Switzerland will both be in confident mood going into this game. The match kicks off at 3 PM EST/12 PM PST.

Where to watch –

This is where viewers from USA can catch the game –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Bjorn Kuipers (Netherlands)

Starting lineups –

France: Lloris – Evra, Sakho, Varane, Debuchy – Cabaye, Matuidi, Sissoko – Benzema, Giroud, Valbuena

Switzerland: Benaglio – Rodriguez, Djourou, Von Bergen, Lichtsteiner – Inler, Behrami, Xhaka – Mehmedi, Seferovic, Shaqiri

Switzerland –

The Swiss managed to sneak out a win in the dying minutes against Ecuador to ensure them 3 points, and will be hoping that their luck favors them yet again against the French tonight.

France –

Les Blues were not made to break a sweat in their opening game against Honduras. They strolled to a 3-0 win over them, and will hoping to keep up the momentum against Switzerland.

Statistics –

Despite the fact that Switzerland left it late against Honduras, they nearly equaled France when it came to pure attacking statistics. Both the teams had more than 10 key passes in the final third and both scored 2 goals or more. Thus, if they both maintain their attacking verve, a high-octane and pulsating contest could very much be in prospect.

Men to watch out for –

Karim Benzema tore Honduras to shreds with a well-taken brace, and the Real Madrid attacker seems to be the most potent threat for the French; while Admir Mehmedi was one of the better players for Switzerland along with winger Xerdan Shaqiri.

Prediction –

With France’s morale boosting win over Honduras, I expect Benzema to once again prove to be a headache for the Swiss defense, and to lead his team to make it two wins out of two.

Switzerland 1-3 France

Italy face off against Costa Rica in a tie that could virtually seal the fate of Group D.

Where to watch –

Viewers in USA can catch the game at 12 PM EST/9 AM PST at –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Enrique Osses (Chile)

Starting lineups –

Italy XI: Buffon; Abate, Barzagli, Chiellini, Darmian; De Rossi, Pirlo, Motta; Candreva, Marchisio; Balotelli.

Costa Rica XI vs Italy: Navas, Gonzalez, Umana, Borges, Duarte, Bolanos, Campbell, Ruiz, Diaz, Gamboa, Tejeda.

Italy –

The Italians would be in positive mood going into today’s fixture on the back of their 2-1 victory over England, whose second straight loss last night meant that they are on the brink of elimination. A victory for the Italians could almost seal their safe passage into the next round.

Costa Rica –

They turned up with a surprise on opening day by shocking Uruguay 3-1 and turning the ‘Group of Death’ on its head which sees them lead the group, as things stand. They would be hoping that they can continue their giant-killing run with the scalp of Italy.

Statistics –

Both the team’s attacking and defending statistics were scarily identical, when the likes of chances created, goals scored, shots on target, interceptions and blocks were taken into account. That sets them up perfectly well for this top-of-the-table clash.

Men to watch out for –

Though Italian maverick Mario Balotelli scored the decisive goal against England, it was Andrea Pirlo who conducted play with elan in the middle of the park, and I fully expect the veteran midfielder from Juventus to once again have a telling contribution.

Costa Rica were unplayable in attack against Uruguay, and a certain Joel Campbell stood out during the match, and got his name on the score sheet. The Arsenal-man will be keeping the Italian defenders busy.

Prediction –

While the vibrant and energetic Costa Rica side will try to dazzle the crowd at Arena Pernambuco again, I do not see them causing yet another upset and Italy to win with a decent margin.

Italy 2-0 Costa Rica

The stakes have been raised for both the teams in todayt’s blockbuster clash between England and Uruguay at 3PM ET/12 PM PT

Where to watch –

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Carlos Velasco Carballo (Spain)

Starting lineups –

England starting XI: Hart, Johnson, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines, Gerrard, Henderson, Welbeck, Rooney, Sterling, Sturridge

Uruguay starting XI: Muslera, Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Pereira, Gonzalez, Rios, Lodeiro, Rodriguez, Cavani and Suarez

England –

Following their 2-1 setback on opening day against Italy, England find themselves in a precarious situation going into today’s game. A loss would see their World Cup dreams shattered, thus there is zero margin for error for The Three Lions.

Uruguay –

The Uruguayans suffered a shock in their opener against Costa Rica as their 3-1 defeat has left them languishing at the bottom of the table. With they also facing the prospect of an early elimination, they will be desperate to make amends tonight against England.

Statistics –

Despite scoring just one goal, England managed to carve out 15 chances against the Italians throughout the game. That could give Roy Hodgson’s men some encouragement and belief in attack today. They could resort to a ‘shoot-on-sight’ policy again tonight, given the fact that they took 18 shots on Sirigu’s goal. The Uruguayan defense would have to put in a shift tonight to repel the English attackers and keep them at bay.

Men to watch out for –

Daniel Sturridge scored England’s goal, and looked like the most potent threat up front. With Wayne Rooney being drafted back in the hole behind him, we can expect Sturridge being supplied with more opportunities to score.

Uruguay have been lifted with the return of Sturridge’s Liverpool partner Luis Suarez, who has been declared fit and is set to start the match. His trickery and pace is something that would definitely prove to be a headache for the English defenders.

Prediction –

With both the teams in danger of being eliminated, we will surely see both of them go all-out in attack, and can expect a high octane contest. Goals could rain today, but I expect a draw at the end of a pulsating contest.

Uruguay 2-2 England

We kick off Group C today at Noon ET/9am PT with Ivory Coast taking on Colombia

Where to watch –

Here’s the schedule for TV viewers in the United States.

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Howard Webb (England)

Starting lineups –

Colombia: Ospina, Zapata, Yepes (c), Sanchez, Armero, Aguilar, Gutierrez, Rodriguez, Cuadrado, Ibarbo, Zuniga

Ivory Coast: Barry, Boka, Zokora, Tiote, Gervinho, Bony, Gradel, Aurier, Y Toure (c), Serey, Bamba.

Ivory Coast –

They got off to a positive start this campaign following their 2-1 comeback win over Japan, which put them in good stead for the remainder of the group stages. However, they face a much sterner challenge now in the form of the Colombians.

Colombia –

The absence of their injured talisman Radamel Falcao seems to have had no effect on Colombia as they have got their World Cup challenge off to a flyer following a 3-0 domination over a sorry Greece. Another win today, and they might very well have one foot in the Round of 16.

Statistics –

Ivory Coast created as many as 14 chances against Japan, but could only succeed in putting away 2 of them. The likes of Wilfried Bony, Didier Drogba and Solomon Kalou will be looking to be more clinical up front tonight.

Colombia were not only exciting and fruitful while going ahead, they were also very organized in defense with no defensive errors throughout their 90 minutes. Their coach Sabri Lamouchi will ask for more of the same from his boys.

Men to watch out for –

Wide man James Rodriguez was impressive last time around, and earned himself a goal while also scooping up the Man of the Match award. The Ivorian full-backs will have their work cut out to stop the threat posed by him.

Gervinho had a good outing against Japan and the Roma attacker will be hoping to carry on the momentum into this one.

Prediction –

It could be an open-ended and exciting game to watch, given the attacking prowess both of them possess. I expect goals from both the sides, but also expect them to share the spoils and earn a point each.

Ivory Coast 2-2 Colombia

Do you agree with me? If not, then who do you expect to snatch a victory? Also, which individual according to you will stand out today? Tell us in the comments section below.

Today’s second clash brings Group B’s Spain and Chile together, with both the teams chasing their individual respective targets –

Where to watch?

For viewers in the United States, here’s where you can watch the game between Spain and Chile (3pm ET/Noon PT)

English language: ESPN and WatchESPN
Spanish language: Univision, Univision Deportes Network and Univision online
Portuguese language: ESPN Deportes

Referee –

Mark W Geiger (USA)

Starting XI:

Spain: Casillas; Azpilicueta, Javi Martínez, Ramos, Jordi Alba; Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Iniesta; Pedro, Diego Costa, Silva

Chile: Bravo; Jara, Silva, Medel; Mena, Aránguiz, Díaz, Isla, Vidal; Vargas, Alexis Sánchez

Spain –

The champions looked anything but that on the opening day of their World Cup campaign. They were humbled and brought to ground by a rampant Dutch outfit, who exacted revenge on them following their heartbreak 4 years ago. Spain lost 5-1, a result which no one foresaw. They would however, be determined to erase that from their system as early as possible, starting tonight by a win against Chile.

Chile –

They deserve credit for the way they set themselves up for their opening tie against Australia. They caught them off guard and were rewarded with a 3-1 win. They will be hoping that Spain fail to recover from their opening-day setback and that they cause an upset.

Statistics –

Erroneous defending from Spain cost them, as out of their 5 goals conceded, 2 were from defensive mistakes.

While Chile were more disciplined at the back against Australia, they will be looking to maintain the same tonight as well.

Man to watch out for –

Spain would be hoping that striker Diego Costa will be able to shrug off his injury which limited his time against Holland and reproduce the form he showed for Athletico Madrid last season.

Chile would be relying on Alexis Sanchez to inspire them to yet another strong performance, as he comes up against several of his Barcelona team-mates on the other side.

Prediction –

I expect del Bosque to bring out the best out of his team and successfully manage to get his title defense back on track by securing the 3 points tonight.

For the players participating in the FIFA World Cup, living up to the expectations of an entire nation is a daunting task in itself to begin with, and it does not get any easier for them as the conditions they are playing in are all the more testing.

Brazil is the temple of football, where the entire nation lives and breathes the game. Hence, it was almost fitting that this entire one-month World Cup carnival was hosted by them this time.

The prize that awaits that one team who wins the trophy is immense, and every participating country knows that. However, not only do they have to overcome the challenge of their rival countries, they also have to brave the hostile climatic conditions in Brazil, as wonderfully described in the infographic below from Andrews Sykes.

The stadiums in Brazil are placed across the entire massive geographic stretch of the nation, right from the Manaus stadium up north, where England fell to Italy last weekend; to the 48,000 plus seater Porto Alegre stadium down south. The immense length and breadth of the country means that the distance between the two stadiums spans nearly 2000 miles.

What makes it worse is that the climatic conditions vary tremendously within the country itself and from stadium to stadium. The elevation ranges from sea-level to 1.172 meters, which means that countries have to face new climatic challenges and adapt to them quickly before every game.

To make matters worse, all the players are put through a grueling sweaty session in every match as the level of humidity rises up to an unforgiving 80%, which not only is a big energy sapping hurdle but could also be a potential hindrance in players’ performances. It sure is a case of ‘survival of the fittest’.

Here’s when the home advantage could have its say. With the Brazilians used to their home conditions, could the climate make a telling contribution as to who wins the World Cup this time around?

Does any football supporter anywhere actually like their TV commentators? One German website reckons not. That’s exactly why www.marcel-ist-reif.de became the world’s first website for live football commentary, giving the fans the ability to commentate on the game, live.

So far, according to reports, it’s been a runaway success, which has encouraged them to launch an international edition at You’llNeverTalkAlone.com just in time for the World Cup.

Football supporters all over the world will now be able to visit the website armed only with a computer, a mic and an internet connection. and commentate on the World Cup. The site appeals to football supporters who just want to turn down the sound on their TV while watching a live game and switch on one of the audio commentators via the youllnevertalkalone.com website.

“It’s time for a worldwide ‘football commentating democracy’,” explains Moritz Eckert, founder and CEO of both websites. “In Germany, we had thousands of football fans come to our website to commentate on Euro 2012 as an alternative to the regular commentators on TV: young and old, men and women, comedians and tacticians, neutral and partial, emotional and easy-going, good ones and bad ones – but they were all pretty authentic. Now we’re welcoming commentators from other football-mad countries like England, Scotland, the USA and others. I myself am hoping to find a cynical Scotsman to listen to for England’s next penalty shootout.”

The commentators on You’ll Never Talk Alone are automatically sorted by number of listeners during each live game so that you can find the best commentators, who are then given feedback about their quality and style by the listeners. “It’s not easy to commentate on a whole football game, but it’s a hell of a lot of fun – for us and our hundreds of listeners,” says Steffen Hoffmann, a regular commentator on marcel-ist-reif since Euro 2012 who co-commentates with a friend under the handle Hoffmann_McBain and is known for his emotional yet analytical style.

Marcel-ist-reif launched successfully in Germany in time for Euro 2012, gaining around 2,500 different commentators, more than 100,000 listeners and two post-Championship awards. Marcel-ist-reif.de won the “Glenfiddich Pioneer Award” for startups and was nominated for one of the most famous media awards in Germany, the “Grimme Online Award.”

The inspiration for this new service came when the founder Moritz Eckert went to buy more beer at half-time during a UEFA Champions League game. He was watching the game on TV in his hometown of Berlin.

“I walked by some bar where a load of students were discussing the tactics in the game and then listened as the person at the checkout make jokes about the two teams and realized: There should be a way to give all these football fans a platform where they can comment on football during live games.”

Together with two friends, Eckert built marcel-ist-reif.de and youllnevertalkalone.com, which he describes as “still a hobby project by football fans for football fans, not some big business”.

To kick things off, You’ll Never Talk Alone is offering the new commentators who get get 20 simultaneous listeners stands a chance to win a Brazil national team jersey. Start up your commentary today at www.youllnevertalkalone.com.

If The Daily Telegraph newspaper is to be believed, Chelsea have begun negotiations with Cesc Fabregas to lure the talented midfielder away from Barcelona and to sign him on a long-term contract in the Premier League. The paper adds that Jose Mourinho admits he’s interested in signing the footballer.

When Fabregas was at Arsenal from 2003-2011, football supporters would have been ridiculed as crazy if it was suggested that Fabregas would one day don the blue shirt of Chelsea, but stranger things have happened. We’re now forced to entertain the possibility, but would Fabregas fit in to Chelsea’s system, and does the club even need another talented midfielder at Stamford Bridge?

Mourinho has publicly declared his interest in signing him as a replacement for the outgoing Frank Lampard. But is Fabregas the type of player that fits the uncreative, at times, and cold Mourinho system. Fabregas and Mourinho are from completely different moulds, with Fabregas being associated with playing the passing game that has perfectly defined Arsenal and Barcelona over the years. He was at the heart of the Arsenal team that embraced the beautiful way of playing football, and then effortlessly slotted in the Barcelona’s style of tiki taka.

While that defines Fabregas, Mourinho is anything but that. He is quite the opposite of it, if nothing else. His criticism of passing football is prominent in the media archives, and also the tactics he has set up against Barcelona in the past to halt their passing game have done nothing to suggest otherwise. The two mentalities of Mourinho and Fabregas are in stark contrast, which could foretell the relationship they will share should Fabregas join Chelsea.

Also, the 27-year old might have to spend some time in transition to get used to Mourinho’s system. Mourinho fancies combative ball winners to put in a shift every time rather than see silky playmakers dictate play in his team but fail to track back. That more than explains the sudden fall of Juan Mata at Chelsea, who was suddenly frozen out after Mourinho’s arrival, and was then shipped out to Manchester United. Such has been Mourinho’s confidence sapping impact on Mata that he is still finding his feet at Old Trafford. Having seen his countryman and fellow playmaker ruthlessly slayed by Mourinho, it’s a possibility that Fabregas could get a sneak peek as to what he can expect, should he make the move to the blue half of London.

Perhaps the most telling factor that could have a say is their respective histories. Not only is Fabregas an ex-Arsenal man, but also has Barcelona running through his veins. Mourinho, on the other hand, has criticized Arsenal and Wenger (Fabregas’ mentor) in particular on numerous occasions. He has also managed Barcelona’s arch rivals Real Madrid and has overseen a series of feisty El Clasico clashes during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. Would Fabregas be willing to upset Wenger and Arsenal, and go join a man who is never remembered fondly by anyone associated with Barcelona? I have my doubts.

Arsenal’s FA Cup victory was expected to be the catalyst for several changes within the club in the coming months and years. After a nine-year trophy drought, they finally have that monkey off their back. They have the money. They have the manager who is staying. They have the stadium that is nearly debt free, and now they even have the silverware. They suddenly look like an attractive club all over again. Everything feels new for Arsenal Football Club.

Except one thing. They still have players leaving them and joining their direct domestic rivals, namely Manchester City. They have been powerless and unsuccessful in arresting these migrations. Kolo Toure started it. Emmanuel Adebayor and Gael Clichy followed. Samir Nasri went too. When the transfers from the Emirates to the Etihad began, the motive seemed to be one and only one: a better paycheck. The money being pumped in from the Middle East turned these players’ heads from Arsenal, who were unable to match the money being offered by City.

Now, despite Arsenal looking in good stead for next season, they are poised to lose another key player to Manchester. Bacary Sagna has confirmed that he will be leaving Arsenal, and City is touted as the most likely destination with the move expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. It looks like history is repeating itself. He rejected Arsenal’s increased contract offer of £80,000, and looks set to pocket £150,000 from the league champions.

On paper, it looks like a selfish, monetary move fueled by personal satisfaction. The legacy and respect of Sagna at Arsenal is in danger of being eroded by his decision. Disgruntled fans claim that he is just another Nasri, but a decent argument can be made as to why he is not so.

Yes, Arsenal have come through a torrid nine years of transition; and there are many instances when people abandon a sinking ship and move on elsewhere. Sagna has done anything but that. He has stuck with the club at a time when they have lost the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song and Robin van Persie among others. He has done his bit for the club in showing his loyalty and commitment, and perhaps he cannot be blamed for being upset about the fact that Arsenal did not tie him down to a new deal long ago rather than leaving it for the last few months. It would only be fair that the club do their bit too and honor his wishes.

In addition, Sagna is currently 31, and entering the last few years of his playing career. Had he stayed, Arsenal would not have been able to get more than two to three years out of him. From a logical standpoint, paying a weekly salary of £150,000 for a 31-year-old right-back makes no sense whatsoever. With a certain Pablo Zabaleta waiting to compete with him for the spot, it is a given that Sagna will not be playing every week at City. If he wishes to earn as much fortune as he can even while sitting on the bench, his decision must be accepted and respected by the Arsenal fans.

Lastly, the circumstances in which he is leaving are much different than what they were when Nasri, Adebayor and Van Persie left. Arsenal fans will not forget Adebayor’s goal celebration back in 2009, nor will Nasri and van Persie’s comments about Arsenal’s lack of ambition be forgotten in a hurry. On the other hand, Sagna only had good words for Arsenal as he said, “It was an honor to grow in the shirt.”

“Arsenal is a club that brought me a lot, both as a person and as a sportsman,” Sagna said. “Even though we had been criticized for quite some time due to the lack of trophies, I spent some magical moments (at Arsenal). If I had to do, I’d do it again.”

Yes, he is joining a direct rival. Yes, he will be team-mates with the players who believe Arsenal lack ambition. Yes, he will face the Gunners next season. But keeping everything in perspective, what he has done for Arsenal deserves to be repaid; and the only way to repay it would be to wish him luck and success on his new venture with Manchester City.

Having been steamrolled out of the way by a rampant Manchester United last season who wrestled the trophy back out of Manchester City’s hands, the Citizens must have known they had an opportunity to win it back this season with Sir Alex Ferguson gone. Last spring, the City executives acknowledged immediate changes were required at the club.

After Roberto Mancini was swiftly sacked in mid-May and replaced by a highly respected and experienced coach in Manuel Pellegrini, City had found the ideal man. Having lured the Chilean from Malaga, he was entrusted to spend City’s transfer budget productively in their bid to win the league crown back.

Without wasting any time, Pellegrini returned to Spain and managed to bring back with him the likes of Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas, who have both been effective this term. The duo, coupled with City’s already envious and glittering strike force lit up the league with a pantheon of goals – which also saw them eclipse the 100-goals mark this season.

Any team visiting the Etihad were blown out of the water right from the very first game. City were unplayable in front of their own fans. However they were equally unpredictable away from home. They took time to find their feet while on the road, but once they steadied the ship, there was no stopping them. Pellegrini must be given credit for arresting City’s away slide, just after everyone started ruling them out of the title race in the first few months of the season itself.

However, Manchester City surprised many with their late surge up the Premier League table. So much so that the club could be considered unlikely heroes given the short number of days they’ve been atop the league table this season.

Taking a direct head-to-head comparison with games played against City’s top 4 rivals, the results are not all that impressive too. They were beaten by Chelsea, both home and away, and even lost to Liverpool at Anfield. They managed to beat Liverpool and Arsenal at home, while only managing a draw away at the Emirates Stadium. That saw them amass only 7 points out of a possible 18 against their direct rivals. Where they have excelled is effectively and consistently putting teams outside the top 4 to the sword.

City have had to take on the mavericks from Liverpool for the last 2-3 months, who have been playing some eye catching football. Riding on the goals from their famed attack consisting of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard among others, the Reds have given sleepless nights to Pellegrini and his team.

However, the frailties of Liverpool – their defense – which have been masked all season due to the brilliance up front, has hurt them hard over the last fortnight. The home defeat to Chelsea, followed by the capitulation at Crystal Palace has seen them blow away perhaps their best chance of winning the title. Now with City only needing to avoid a defeat at home against West Ham tomorrow to be crowned champions, it is out of Liverpool’s hands who will be left ruing this missed opportunity.

What differentiates potential champions Manchester City and unfortunate also-rans Liverpool is the back four. While Liverpool have shipped in way too many goals, they have managed to score more, which has papered over the cracks and worked well for them all season, until now; but that is not how the best team in the land should be setup, and this has ultimately cost them.

Do I believe that Liverpool deserve to be champions this season? For me, no, despite the fact that they have been such an energetic, eye-catching, entertaining attacking team to watch. They have failed to address pressing issues in the summer or in January, and manager Brendan Rodgers has not made things right when he had the chance.

When it comes to making things right, that’s what City have done brilliantly. Starting from the spring itself when Pellegrini was brought in for Mancini, to dealing with Joe Hart’s poor form, to rectifying their early season blip in away games, to establishing solidity at the back while continuing to bang in the goals up front. That’s what champions do. They change things. They adapt, and then they survive.

This is exactly why I feel that Manchester City, led by the intelligent and brilliant Manuel Pellegrini, deserve to be handed the trophy back tomorrow.
