United States (Brazil 2014 World Cup Preview)

Whilst it might not be the biggest discussion topic for the rest of the world, the USMNT is cause for a some in depth discussion in the pod. Who is in? Who is out? Does that even matter when they are working in the long term and phasing from one generation tot he next?

Huge discussions about the ability and relative achievements of the team, with and without Landon. Let’s Talk World Soccer:

Good god, did Jurgen Klinsmann hand select the 17 or so people on this show?

I would have thought that you could have found one person, just for s**ts and giggles, that could present the case that Donovan deserved to be on the squad. I understand the argument that Julian Green is great for the future, but anyone who really follows this team can’t possibly say that he’s a better player than LD is right now at this stage in their careers (catch Green’s performance in that Turkey game?). I realize you media folks are sick of talking about it, but like it or not, it’s THE main narrative for US fans for the 2014 World Cup–and to not al least acknowledge both viewpoints just comes across as lazy.

Also, to blindly swallow the Klinsmann/USMNT narrative that he’s boldly moving the team forward into the future seems naive at best and Euro-elitist at worst.

There was one host and 5 panelists on the show.

I believe Kris Heneage presented the case that Donovan should have been on the squad. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Just listened and I didn’t hear it. No offense, you guys put out a great product, but as a US fan this one came across as unbalanced, negative, and off point (and a bit condescending). Only my opinion, and really we’re all just speculating: the proof’s in the pudding and that won’t come for another few weeks…

They’re just opinions right now. We’ll find out in a few weeks whether the podcast was too harsh or spot on. Let’s hope the US does well.

Yup, we shall see. Hoping for the best, but sort of expecting the worst at this point. I think Klinsmann is skating on thinner ice than he realizes.

Curious to see how much confidence Klinsman has in Altidore.

    Another great pod guys.

Can’t agree with the point Germany have problems in midfield. In fact, they arguably have the best pool of midfielders to choose from.

I agree that they have problems in attack but playing Muller or Goetze there will hardly weaken the side. Muller is a proven goalscorer, known for being in the right place at the right time, and playing someone like Goetze – who’s instincts will be to drop deep – creates space for their other seventeen brilliant attacking midfielders to get in to.

    Where’s the Scotland preview?

Good stuff guys. I’ve really enjoyed these. One question….how are you going to do the remaining teams before the cup starts?

Damn! Took my question. How are you gonna get in the remaining previews?

Laurence will have to answer that question!
