Stephen Warnock: Transitioning from playing to co-commentating

In the NEW episode, number 1397, Kyle Fansler chats with freelance commentator Stephen Warnock about his career.

While he is officially a freelance commentator, Stephen Warnock is a common voice heard on the Premier League world feed. Remarkably, he only retired from his playing career in 2018. This quick turnaround from player into commentator is worth a deeper dive.

In this brief chat, Stephen Warnock and Kyle Fansler talk about a number of different topics:

  • His career path as a player making stops at major clubs
  • Liverpool FC TV and his first exposure to sports media
  • Baby steps in growing his commentary résumé.
  • The biggest games he has had the honor of calling
  • How one specific growing market is where he wants to end up in the long run
  • The benefits of being a former player and commentating
  • And much more

Very good interview. I especially enjoyed Stephen’s discussion of self-improvement as he grows in the industry. What a great idea to watch replays, pause after key events to give commentary, and then see how it compares to the game announcers. A fun and informative listen. Good luck to Stephen.
