Latest Tactical Trends In Soccer: From Danny Higginbotham and Kartik Krishnaiyer

Danny Higginbotham and Kartik Krishnaiyer discuss the tactical trends they gleaned from Euro 2020 including the popularity of 3-5-2 formations, the rise of ball-playing center halves, the resurgence of the deep-lying playmaker, number 9’s dropping deeper, why there were so few goals scored from set pieces as well as the key partnerships between strikers and wide players and why that’s hard for teams to defend against.

On the topic of the resurgence of the deep-lying playmaker, the discussion mentions the key roles that footballers such as Billy Gilmour, Jorginho, Pierre-Emile Hojberg and Declan Rice played for their respective countries.

Danny Higginbotham, who has been familiar to American Premier League viewers for his work on Sky Sports, Premier League Productions and BT Sport, has also appeared on NBC’s Premier League coverage in the past as well as this season. A familiar face as a player, he was part of Manchester United’s famous class of ’92, but is probably best known for his playing days at Stoke City during a period of time when the Premier League was growing quickly in popularity stateside.

This was a good listen. I’ve enjoyed the change of pace. Hope Chris is doing well and not absent for any bad reasons

I’m doing well. Needed a little bit of a break but I also wanted to mix things up a bit on the podcast and to try a couple of different things.

I’ve also been releasing several soccer-related videos on the WST YouTube channel the past few weeks while Kartik has been busy on the podcast…

    Hi Guys,
I have been enjoying these series of interviews, especially the one Kartik did with Ian Darke last week. This week’s pod I found interesting because it provided a level of analysis regarding tactics that explained a lot in terms of how the modern game is played. Danny did an excellent job in my view of breaking them down so that the average fan could understand why certain teams play in a certain style. Even though this episode was focused on the Euros, I would love to see a similar episode done with the Copa America and the tactical trends that came out of that competition. Lastly, I will post on the World Soccer Talk Facebook page my thoughts on Fox’s Copa America coverage for you guys to read during the next Listener Mailbag segment. Keep up the great work

Kartik Krishnaiyer could possibly be the only lad in the football media to pronounce the word “particularly” correctly. Hearing English speakers say “particully” drives me up the wall.

More of this please, I know TV stuff is your main focus but the weekly reviews gets stale, only so much can be said about the same commentators/pundits pretty much providing the same exact coverage each week. Just my opinion not trying to be negative, I listen each week anyway.

I am enjoying your series of interviews, and this was especially interesting. My tactical knowledge is minimal and I generally prefer my team to have a strong goal-scorer and to take risks (high press, high line, etc.).
    .
I particularly liked learning from Danny about why many successful teams do not do the things I prefer, and what some top teams are trying to achieve with formations, spacing, and mismatches

Thanks Dave. We’d like to get more feedback from other listeners too in order to see if this is a series that soccer fans would like to hear on a regular basis.
