Krul and the Gang (EPL Talk Review Podcast)

A Sunday packed full of football left City in crisis, Tottenham ill-tempered, and Arsene annoyed.

In section 1 we talk about the crescendo of the day’s football as Arsenal took on Manchester United at Old Trafford. Has Moyes proved a point with his recent form, or are sterner tests lurking in the shadows? With RVP putting his former employers to the sword, we also assess the potential weaknesses of this current side.

Moving forward, we also look at a heroic performance from Dutch stopper Tim Krul. The custodian pulled off 14 saves for Newcastle as they snatched victory from White Hart Lane. Meanwhile Spurs were forced to leave Hugo Lloris out in favour of the veteran Brad Friedel, as they once again struggled to break the net at home, we ask just why can’t such a talented squad perform football’s most important trick – scoring!

It’s a habit near neighbours Chelsea have not struggled with of late. Their last minute penalty saw controversy engulf Stamford Bridge. Jose thought it was a penalty, but did you? Let us know.

Then in the final section we discuss a hapless Fulham, a happy Southampton and a relieved Aston Villa. As always the discussion just isn’t half as fun without your thoughts, so feel free to let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Great analysis by Mr Henage on the Newcastle v Spurs game…Remy has worked out for Newcastle but I still think that the newer yet much maligned inverted winger system will prove fruitful las we get closer to the business end of the season.

It’s what Soldado, Chadli, Lamela and Eriksen amongst others were brought in for.

For me there have been 4 major stalling points with the implimentation of the system.

    1. The amount of new players along with the new system was always going to mean it would take time.

    2. A key component to the inverted wingers is the overlapping fullbacks. Danny Rose being injured for the last 7 weeks or so has ment that Naughton was asked to fill in and just is not the overlapping left footed crosser we need, since Jan has stepped in, that has improved.

    3. Chadli, Lennon being injured means sigy was asked to play as the inverted winger, and while he has played well in spells he isn’t an inverted winger and he is all to often caught trying the spectacular… Which brings me to Townsend, Jesus…the amount of shots this season 41, the amount of goals…1 and that was an atempted cross.

The damn English WC Qualifier worldly he scored was the worse thing to happen, as pointed out on the pod by Morgan, Townsend like hazard is a one trick pony, he’s still not as good as Hazard by any stretch but they do have that similarity. Townsends continued ignoring of walker is in complete contradiction of what the first read is supposed to be as an inverted winger. It’s a myth that walker and Townsend have great rhythm and relationship, unless they are talking about private dance lesson.

The lack of end product is all the evidence you need to see that the “partnership” is an aesthetic one

What the inverted winger provides Is…. full back overlaps as the the midfielder and opposing fullback pinch in to cover said inverted wingers run at the box, as soon as that happens the ball is supposed to be fed to the new found free overlapping walker for him to put into the box accross the face of the goal or cut back. Either way the overlapping fullback is to be given the ball whenever the defense gets dragged inside and Townsend repeatedly ignores walker or is far too late getting him the ball.

If Townsend kept the ball and played a 1-2 with the often open eriksen or holtby or Soldado and drove into the box (as sigy has done to great effect on occasion) then that would be a vast improvement but this constant shooting is stale and shows he really needs to become a smarter footballer.

Similarly Chadli was brought to draw in the defenders and releaese Rose, But as we know he too has been injured.

Lamela needs to start and Townsend needs to sit and learn and earn his place back,or at least attempt to. Once Lamela gets going I just don’t see Townsend being used in the BPL on the right.

4.the next issue has been in the CDM role! A key component in allowing the midfield partnership in front of the defense to both shield and generate counter attacks.

Kapow’s injury in the Farsenal game really threw a spanner in the works, Sandro wasn’t ready yet, so playing paulinho and dembele in that role as proved v Newcastle doesn’t work, neither are CDM players they are both box midfielder’s. The sooner Kapow can play every 90m in the BPL the better.

The reason I would choose him over the fan favorite Sandro is really his ball playing and vision. Sandro is an amazing move killer and interceptor but his touch and distribution is inferior to kapow’s by quite some distance.

It’s why Kapow was brought in, he is a Sandro 2.0 upgrade, and to me is more a driving force in the Vierra / YaYa mould. I know that’s a bold statement as one is a legend and the other currently rightfully justified beast of a player. Only time will show this, but Kapow is a physical unit with a great touch and vision. An absolute gem.

So with all these issues why is AVB persisting with the system? IMO it’s obv, the rest of the team still needs to impliment it in a game situation and not just in training so that when these players do feature it’s not starting from scratch.

It’s been rough at times but it will get better, the fact we had 31 chances and 14 on target instead of 4 is sign of that. As is the players coming back and other beginning to settle in. I’d be fine with a January addition at striker and sell Defoe to Wet Spam. I’d give Harry Kane a go too at the moment as Defoe is just not good enough for BPL at spurs. 15 mins yesterday 1 offside, 1 pass, no shots, lots of arms in the air and bitching for no reason tho.

These are obviously just my own observations, I hope when we play City those areas show signs of progress.

For me the lineup to get a result at city would be…

    ————Sandro—-Kapow (let Kapow drive fwd)

Subs: Dembele, Townsend, Kaboom, Kane, Holtby

Let the slaughtering, thumbs down with inevitable trolling by the same person begin…

After spending 100M+ Spurs are in the need of a quality striker? Don’t you still have Adebayor who was supposed to solve all your scoring woes? Spurs striker situation eerily resembles Minnesota Vikings search for a franchise quarterback.

I don’t think there is a crisis at spurs for a striker, for me sold ado should start all bpl games, but from a rotation and plan b I think either rive kane a go or buy another striker.

LOL funny an allergy but i don’t think thats the case we have 2 now, Eriksen and Kapow different, but game dictators for me, games will flow through those two.

Could the word you’re grasping for be analogy? ‘An allergy’ what an idiot. Above you indicate being trolled. How is it trolling with posts like this, your Bale rants, your self-righteous sanctimonious soap box posts, etc? I’m just one of the growing number of readers that see through your pretentious posts for the vapid uninspired pieces they truly are.

Dust, What do you think of Dembele ? IMHO he has been off the boil the last couple of matches. ” Glory, Glory ” and ” Fighting Cock ” are in meltdown over AVB in or out. I know you like AVB but does he have to produce more goals and win to which being pragmatic and scoring once and closing up shop ? i.e. like Mourinho’s first time around Chelsea.

          • dust

            November 11, 2013 at 5:28 pm

I agree Dembele has been off the boil. I don’t pay attention to the madness on those blogs.

The reality is that implementing a new system and new players takes a while. A lot of the people not eh AVB out wagon are truly clueless.

its not perfect, AVB has made mistakes, but the over reaction is for the football illiterate IMO.

We will score more… i don’t think it will be like Mourinho 1.0…

AVB is a big Pep and Barca fan, and that is the style he wants to embody, high line, high pressing, passing and insightful, but that didn’t happen over night for them and it obv isn’t happening overnight for us.

The AVB admiration of Pep and Barca is another reason Jose doesn’t like him and publicly says AVB has no similarity to him tactically.

its already a interesting season… The game v city in two weeks at the etihad is massive, bigger for city I think as we are not expected to win there but they are, then UTD at home…
