Ten-time reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have released their new home shirt for the upcoming 2022/23 season, with the design set to make it’s on-field debut this upcoming Sunday versus VfB Stuttgart.

The all-red affair features a white horizontal pinstripe pattern across the front body of the shirt, with each stripe varying in width, almost giving the design a slightly worn look (or perhaps a bit reminiscent of when your printer is running out of red ink). Either way, it’s a solid visual effect and a nice change of pace from what is usually a plain red top for the German champions.

The trim features a white collar and sleeve cuffs, which like the pinstripes on the body of the top, have a woven texture to them that gives a little bit of extra interest to the detailing.

The back of the shirt does not feature the striping from the front, presumably for number readability. Although that can easily be remedied with some contrasting outlining on the type (like the sponsor and maker’s mark logos on the front of the shirt have – more on that in a second). That’s not a deal-breaker though, it’s just fine without the stripes carrying over to the back. The back features the club motto “MIA SAN MIA” and the full club name above the number, with the player’s name below.

Reviewing the Bayern Munich 2022/23 home shirt

Not featured in any of the club’s promo photos, but available to those who purchase the top and will be worn by the club next season, is a special gold “Serienmeister” (“Serial Champions”) badge to commemorate Bayern’s ridiculous accomplishment of 10 consecutive Bundesliga titles.

The full kit features red shorts and red socks.

Areas of improvement are the sponsor logo(s). The black outlining on the Adidas and Telekom (Allianz on the women’s version) logos seems like an odd color choice when the color appears nowhere else on the kit. Blue, or red (to help the logos stand out from the striping), would have worked just as well and not have been as jarring as the black is.

In a similar situation as clubs like Liverpool or Roma, who also traditionally wear plain, solid tops, it’s always difficult to come up with something fresh year after year, but Bayern has done well with this one. Out on the pitch this will no doubt look like Bayern, but the details give it a fresh spin and offer a good reason for both serial kit collectors and dedicated Bayern supporters to head out and snap up another red shirt.
