5 reasons Seattle Sounders can’t blame Sigi Schmid for 2016 shortcomings

Photo credit: Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports After more than seven years in Major League Soccer, the Seattle Sounders finally cut ties with coach Sigi Schmid. The two parties agreed to a mutual parting following Seattle’s thrashing at the hands of Western Conference rivals Sporting KC. However, to blame Schmid for the Sounders’ problems on the pitch would be erroneous. It is his job to get the team ready tactically on the pitch, but the players let him down from the moment the season kicked off. In addition, Schmid wasn’t helped by the assembling of the side this season, which has ... Read more

The game that sparked the fall of Seattle Sounders and Sigi Schmid

Sigi Schmid finally met his end on Tuesday, fired after seven-and-a-half seasons in Seattle with his Sounders 21 points behind Western Conference-leading FC Dallas, ten points below the red line, and just one point out of last place. It was a position that even a manager of Schmid’s stature couldn’t survive – especially not after Seattle failed to register a single shot until the 88th minute on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City in an unforgivably indifferent 3-0 loss. How’d we get here? Certainly, the Sounders’ sale of Obafemi Martins to China right before the start of the season was a ... Read more

Struggling Sounders say goodbye to Schmid

Los Angeles (AFP) – The struggling Seattle Sounders parted ways with Sigi Schmid on Tuesday, bidding farewell to the only coach they’ve known since their Major League Soccer debut in 2009. The Sounders dropped to ninth — next to last — in the Western Conference after a lackluster 3-0 defeat to Sporting Kansas City on Sunday. Long-time assistant Brian Schmetzer will take over as interim coach of the club, which has six wins and 12 defeats this season. “Ultimately the club and Sigi agreed that a change was needed at this time, but Sigi’s legacy will always be a part ... The Seattle Sounders won a thrilling 2-0 victory in last night’s U.S. Open Cup as the Sounders have now won three straight Open Cup trophies.  Their opponents, the Chicago Fire, failed to become only the third team ever to win the Cup five times.  The first goal came in the 77th minute and Chicago had some good chances to equalize before Seattle sealed the victory in stoppage time. In celebration of Seattle’s historic win, here is a video of maybe the best press conference celebration ever.  The comments section is open to discuss the match and what Seattle’s win means ... MLS Table As It Now Stands 10/18 Update

One week to go, and this is where we stand: As the table stands now, this would be the playoff matchup – WEST  Los Angeles vs Seattle Houston vs Chivas EAST Columbus vs  Colorado Chicago vs Toronto Remember, the first tie-breaker is head to head competition, not goal difference.  The Galaxy have a superior record against both Chivas and Houston, so if they win their game Saturday against San Jose, and Chivas does not pick up four points from their remaining two games, the Galaxy will have won the west.  This will represent an amazing turn-around under Bruce Arena, who ... The Ballad of Freddy Adu

Freddy Adu & Pele On Saturday in Monaco, A.S. Monaco beat Stade Rennes, 3 to 1, giving Monaco 40 points on the season thus far and securing a spot in the middle of the French Ligue 1 table. Sitting on Monaco’s bench, was one Freddy Adu, watching his team take on a Rennes’ squad that included the captain of the US National Team, Carlos Bocanegra. Despite suiting up on Saturday, Adu did not see any playing time. The apparently star-crossed story of Freddy Adu is familiar to most American soccer fans. Born in Ghana, Adu moved to the United States ... Read more
