
<p>CONCACAF has officially <a href="https://mailchi.mp/767347380e79/concacaf-confirms-concacaf-nations-league-semifinals-and-play-in-pairings-and-schedule?e=6f2bbf2df0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">revealed</a> the two matchups for the upcoming Nations League semifinals. The quarterfinals of the competition wrapped on Tuesday night following victories by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/jamaica-national-team-tv-schedule/">Jamaica</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/mexico-national-team-tv-schedule/">Mexico</a>. Jamaica booked their place in the semis by edging <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/canada-national-team-tv-schedule/">Canada</a> 3-2 on the night. The two-legged fixture ended all square 4-4, but the Reggae Boyz advanced on the away goal rule.</p>



<p>Mexico, on the other hand, had to go to a penalty shootout to decide their matchup with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/honduras-national-team-tv-schedule/">Honduras</a>. El Tri eventually topped their Central American opponents 4-2 on spot kicks. As a result, Mexico will next face <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/panama-national-team-tv-schedule/">Panama</a> in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/concacaf-nations-league-schedule/">CONCACAF Nations League</a> semifinals.</p>



<p>Jamaica will face the USA in their Nations League semifinal fixture. The matchups were made due to the quartet’s results in the quarterfinal stage. Panama topped the table by winning both of their games against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/costa-rica-national-team-tv-schedule/">Costa Rica</a>. As the top team in the standings, Panama earned a fixture against fourth-place Mexico. El Tri finished bottom of the four teams on goal difference.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/usmnt-tv-schedule/">USMNT</a> finished second in the standings with a positive goal differential of plus two. Jamaica, like Mexico, also compiled an even goal difference in the quarterfinal stage.</p>



<h2>USA to play Nations League semifinal in Texas</h2>



<p>All of the remaining Nations League matches will take place at AT&amp;T Stadium in Texas. This includes the two semifinals, a third-place game, as well as the final. Ticketing information is available via CONCACAF’s <a href="https://www.concacaf.com/nations-league/tickets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">official website</a>. The exact times of the aforementioned matchups will be revealed at a later date.</p>

<h2>Play-in games also to determine Copa America qualification</h2>



<p>All four semifinal teams have now automatically qualified for the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">2024 Copa America</a>. CONMEBOL announced the tournament, typically in South America, is <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/2024-copa-america-to-be-hosted-in-united-states-20230127-WST-417271.html">going to the United States</a>. Although the entire schedule has not yet been released, the opening match of the tournament and the final have been announced. Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta will host the opening game, while Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium is set to host the final.</p>



<p>Along with the four aforementioned teams, two other CONCACAF nations will also qualify for the 2024 Copa America. These two teams will advance to the tournament in separate play-in games. Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Honduras, all four teams to lose in the Nations League quarterfinals, will feature in the miniature play-in competition.</p>



<p>Canada will face off against Trinidad and Tobago in the first matchup. Costa Rica, on the other hand, is playing Honduras. Both matches will take place on March 23rd in Frisco, Texas. The 2024 Copa America will feature six CONCACAF sides and 10 CONMEBOL teams.</p>

USA learns opponent in Nations League semifinal

CONCACAF has officially unveiled the 2023/24 Nations League semifinal schedule. The USMNT and Mexico have been placed in separate matchups.

<p>The Panama national football team is arguably the most competitive team in CONCACAF outside of Mexico and the United States in the modern era. While they’ve never won the Gold Cup, they have appeared in three finals – the third most appearances of any team. All three of these runner-up campaigns have occurred since 2005, along with two third-place finishes as well.</p>



<p>Panama won the now-defunct Copa Centroamericana (1991-2017) in 2009, finished runners-up twice, and third thrice. There were also champions of the CCCF Championship in 1951, a year in which they hosted the competition.</p>



<p>Outside of CONCACAF though, it’s been rough going. Panama did not enter qualification for the World Cup until 1978, declining to participate from 1938-1974. In their only World Cup Finals appearance to date, 2018, they finished dead last with a 0-0-3 record and a -9 goal difference. At the 2016 Copa América Centenario, Panama finished in 12th place.</p>

<p>Unsurprisingly, both the United States and Panama meet in the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal on Wednesday evening. It’s not surprising because between 2005 and 2019, USA has played Panama a total of nine times at all eight Gold Cups.  Two of those games were in the final which the US both won (2005 and 2013).  Looking ahead to the USA vs Panama preview, the next chapter between these two turns to San Diego, California.</p>



<h2>US survives against Canada</h2>



<p>To make it to the semifinal, the US had to endure a heavy slog against Canada that went all the way to penalty kicks after extra time. Just after the game started, things got weird when the <a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/referee-brutally-hit-ball-face-30429891" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">assistant referee got hit in the face</a> with a ball from point-blank range, breaking his nose.</p>



<p>The first half that followed was mostly dull save for the whopping 10 minutes of added time, mostly due to the injury to the assistant referee.</p>



<p>The second half wasn’t much better save for a few decent saves from Canadian goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.  The last ten minutes of the game is when both teams finally decided to start playing, and the US duly took the lead in the 87th minute through Brandon Vazquez.  </p>

<p>Just moments later though, Canada was able to equalize on a penalty kick, conceded after Miles Robinson handled the ball in the penalty area (the second time in the game he had done so).  </p>



<p>In extra time, Canada thought they had it won after Nashville SC’s Jacob Shaffelburg put them in front just ten minute from time.  But Matt Turner played in a great ball to the box and after several deflections, the ball found its way past St. Clair into the back of the net for a 2-2 scoreline.  </p>



<p>Penalties got off to a bizarre start as Matt Turner was not happy with the coin toss procedure. And then each set of players decided that standing at midfield for the taking of kicks somehow did not apply to them.  But in the end, Turner came up big for the US, saving the first two Canada penalties and forcing a miss on the fifth one.</p>



<h2>USA vs Panama preview: Panama’s path to the semifinal</h2>



<p>Panama made it to the semifinal in relatively easy fashion.  They finished top of Group C with seven points.  They opened with a 2-1 win over Costa Rica.  That win was followed by a 2-1 win over Martinique. Panama closed the Group Stage with a 2-2 draw against El Salvador.  </p>



<p>In the quarter-final, they made short work of a Qatar team playing in their second consecutive Gold Cup.  Ismael Diaz notched a second half hat trick helping Los Canaleros to a 4-0 win over the 2022 World Cup hosts.  </p>



<p>Panama coach Thomas Christiansen has had an interesting managerial career.  He has had two stops at clubs in Cyprus as well as a 35-game stint at Leeds United. Prior to taking the Panama job, he managed Union SG in Belgium.  </p>



<p>The Panama roster called in by Christiansen is one of the most experienced at this Gold Cup.  Seven of the players have over 50 caps, with Alberto Quintero topping out at 129 international appearances.  </p>

<p>Wednesday’s game against Panama is set for a 7:30pm ET kickoff from Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.  The game will air on FS1 in English and on Univision and TUDN in Spanish. <p>This game marks the first USMNT appearance in San Diego since a 2017 friendly against Serbia.  </p>



<p>Despite the sheer number of Gold Cup meetings between the two, this is the first time the US and Panama have faced each other since a friendly in Austria in 2020.</p>
