Toronto Claims Its Place in History It hadn’t been the easiest of journeys through the playoffs for Toronto FC, but on Saturday evening at BMO Field, they left no doubt as to their place as one of the best MLS team ever assembled. The game might have hung in the balance until second half stoppage time, but TFC played the Seattle Sounders off the field in their MLS Cup rematch. Had Stefan Frei not made nine more saves – several of them ... Read more

2016 MLS Cup to be televised live on FOX broadcast network and UniMas

Major League Soccer today announced that the 2016 MLS Cup final will be played on Saturday, December 10 during primetime and will be televised live on FOX broadcast network, Univision Deportes and UniMas in the United States. By broadcasting the game at 8pm ET on the over-the-air FOX network, MLS ensures that the league will stem the tide of declining TV ratings for the pinnacle game of the US league’s season. The Saturday night primetime broadcast means two things. One, it’s the first time in the league’s 21-season history the championship match will be played on a Saturday evening in ... Read more

The final TV viewing numbers are in for 2015 MLS Cup, and it’s not good news. As we reported yesterday, the combined viewing figure for the Columbus-Portland game on ESPN and Univision Deportes was 874,000. The only number we were missing was UniMas. Despite positive numbers for last year’s final on UniMas, the number for the Crew SC-Timbers final was down 56% this year to 300,000. When the US TV numbers are combined, the viewing audience size for all three major networks declined 38% compared to last year (see below). 2015 MLS Cup scores 874,000 total viewers for Columbus-Portland final

Despite recording the lowest-ever overnight rating in the league’s 20-year history, the final viewing number for the 2015 MLS Cup wasn’t as bad as some first feared. A total of 668,000 people watched the game on ESPN, while 206,000 viewed the game on Univision Deportes for a grand total of 874,000 people. As of press time, the viewing numbers for UniMas have not yet been released. In the first year of MLS’ mega TV deal with ESPN, FOX Sports and Univision, the 2015 MLS Cup saw a 30% decline compared to the 964,000 who tuned in last year to watch Landon ... Read more

Timbers edge Columbus 2-1 to capture MLS Cup

It was the first time the Timbers had lifted the champion’s trophy, denying Columbus a second MLS title after their breakthrough in 2008. “This is special for us,” said Valeri, who was named the match’s Most Valuable Player. “I’m really thankful. I’m happy for myself and my teammates.” In only their fifth MLS season, the Timbers became just the third expansion club to win the crown, after the ... Read more

2014 MLS Cup Sees Increase In Viewership On ESPN

The 2014 MLS Cup delivered a 0.6 overnight HH US rating on ESPN, which is an increase compared to the overnight numbers for the 2013 MLS Cup. It’s important to note that the 2013 MLS Cup was the least-watched MLS Cup ever with a 0.5 overnight HH US rating and an average viewing audience of 505,000, so while the 2014 MLS Cup TV rating saw a boost, it was from a very poor 2013 number. To put things into perspective, the 2012 MLS Cup — between LA Galaxy and Houston — had a better HH US rating (0.7) and average viewing size with an average viewing ... MLS Cup 2013 Down 44% In Viewership; Sets Record As Least-Viewed MLS Cup Ever

Saturday’s live broadcast of the 2013 MLS Cup on ESPN had an average viewing audience of 505,000, which is the least-viewed MLS Cup ever on English-language television. The previous record low was the 748,000 viewers who watched the 2010 MLS Cup between Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas. That game had a 0.44 TV rating, but the viewing audience was greater than the 2013 MLS Cup due to the 2010 game being shown at night instead of the 4pm ET broadcast between Sporting KC-Real Salt Lake. The 2012 MLS Cup between between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo had a 0.7 TV ... Read more

Houston Machine Steamrolls DC to Take Eastern Conference

In retrospect, it was obvious.  Houston is so good playing with an aggregate lead in the playoffs and with DC missing Chris Pontius and a fully healthy Dwayne De Rosario, the task really was impossible.  But it didn’t feel that way at RFK Stadium Sunday afternoon, as a crowd of over 20,000 (including 350 standing room attendees) rocked the stands at kickoff, trying to inspire the home team to victory.  Despite the crowd and emotional return of the home team’s captain, the end result was a 1-1 draw and a 4-2 Dynamo win on aggregate. DC adjusted its lineup without ... Read more
