Ex-Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: ‘I’m not retiring yet’

Madrid (AFP) – Louis van Gaal says he is not definitely done with football just yet, after appearing to suggest earlier this week that he was retiring from the game at 65. The Dutchman, who was sacked by Manchester United last year after an uninspiring stint at Old Trafford, had told popular daily tabloid De Telegraaf: “I don’t believe I’ll return to work.” But less than a day later van Gaal rowed back on that, telling Spanish radio overnight Tuesday-Wednesday that nothing was final and his future “depends on offers” at the end of what he has called a sabbatical. ... ‘Iron Tulip’ Louis Van Gaal to retire

The Hague (AFP) – Firebrand manager Louis van Gaal has announced his retirement from professional football after more than three decades, citing “family reasons,” a Dutch newspaper reported Tuesday. “I don’t believe I’ll return back to work,” Van Gaal told popular daily tabloid De Telegraaf, which added he is “definitely drawing a line under his training career.” The man nicknamed the “Iron Tulip” has received dozens of lucrative offers since his unceremonial axing from Manchester United last year, including a three-year contract in the East, most likely China, which would pay an estimated 50 million euros ($53.4 million) over three ... Louis van Gaal is the manager Belgium needs to lead the national team

Louis van Gaal’s tenure at Old Trafford ended with a trophy, the FA Cup no less, but you’d be hard pressed to find a Manchester United fan labeling the Dutchman’s two seasons at the club a success. Sandwiched in between the dreaded ‘P’s ‘philosophy’ and ‘process’ was a serving of sterile, unambitious football that found no favor with the United faithful. Factor in an expensive squad restructure, €190.77m net spend over Van Gaal’s reign, that produced precious little and it’s easy to see why the Iron Tulip’s time was cut short. One can only speculate whether United would have honored ... Read more

Smalling grateful for Van Gaal teachings

Chantilly (France) (AFP) – Manchester United defender Chris Smalling paid tribute to former manager Louis van Gaal on Wednesday for helping him to become a first-choice pick for both club and country. United said farewell to defensive stalwarts Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic prior to Van Gaal’s arrival in 2014 and when it came to constructing a new back four, the Dutchman made Smalling a central component. With Smalling a virtual ever-present, United had the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League last season and although Van Gaal was sacked, to be replaced by Jose Mourinho, the England defender remains ... Van Gaal axed by Manchester United as Mourinho waits in wings

London (AFP) – Louis van Gaal’s sacking as Manchester United manager was finally confirmed on Monday as Jose Mourinho prepared to take charge at Old Trafford. Van Gaal had appeared certain to lose his job since reports leaked out after United’s FA Cup final victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday that former Chelsea boss Mourinho was being lined up to replace him. The 64-year-old had hoped leading United to their first major silverware since the retirement of legendary boss Alex Ferguson in 2013 would persuade the club’s United States-based owners, the Glazer family, to let him see out the final ... ‘Iron Tulip’ Van Gaal wilts in Man Utd spotlight

London (AFP) – The realisation that Louis van Gaal was not the manager Manchester United had hoped for seemed to dawn on him at roughly the same time as it did the club’s supporters. Defending his record after a 2-1 home defeat by Norwich City back in December that exposed him to the full venom of Old Trafford, he said: “I am — or maybe I have to say now, was — a very successful manager.” The mid-sentence adjustment contained a telling admission. Van Gaal, 64, had joined United lauded as one of the enduring figures of the Dutch school ... Read more

Van Gaal sacked by Manchester United — reports
