Altidore double as US romp to win over Trinidad

Jacksonville (AFP) – Striker Jozy Altidore scored twice as the United States thrashed Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 to book their place in the final round of the CONCACAF region’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Altidore scored twice in four minutes midway through the second half, either side of goals from Sacha Kljestan and substitute Paul Arriola to confirm an emphatic win for the hosts at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. Jurgen Klinsmann’s side had needed only a point to be sure of reaching the final round of qualifiers for Central America, North America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF). However a confident USA ... Altidore out of Copa America with injury

Los Angeles (AFP) – United States striker Jozy Altidore was ruled out of the upcoming Copa America Centenario on Monday with a hamstring injury, his club said. Toronto FC said in a statement Altidore faced up to eight weeks out after suffering the injury while taking a penalty during Saturday’s Major League Soccer clash with the Vancouver Whitecaps.  “Forward Jozy Altidore has been diagnosed with a hamstring strain and is expected to be out of the line-up for 6-8 weeks,” the club statement said. Altidore, 26, has featured regularly in USA squads in recent years and would have been likely ... Read more

Three red cards in one year? It’s time for Jozy Altidore to grow up.

Jozy Altidore needs to grow up. On Wednesday night, the 25-year-old, 87-time United States international picked up his third red card of the calendar year in a game where he wasn’t even on the field. Between club and country, it was his third dismissal of the calendar year. It’s perfectly acceptable to dislike a call the referee makes (what player doesn’t at some point), but Altidore needs to realize that there are three people on that field who change the referee’s mind — the two assistant referees, and the fourth official — and he isn’t one of them. His actions ... Read more

Jurgen Klinsmann, Jozy Altidore and theories of dark motives; By Steve Davis

Jurgen Klinsmann doesn’t like MLS players, right? It’s so obvious! (Well, except for all those he took to Brazil last year … way more than Bob Bradley took to South Africa in 2010. But never mind that!) Jurgen Klinsmann plays favorites with some agents and, therefore, favors their clients, right? Someone’s got pictures of Jurgen Klinsmann; that’s the only way to explain his unpredictable choices! Of course they do. It’s all such nonsense. And yet it persists, as U.S. Soccer supporters strain to explain what looks to them like the unexplainable. Only, it’s not. Unexplainable, that is. Nothing of the ... Read more

Why Jozy Altidore’s latest hamstring injury is worrying for US team; By Steve Davis

For Toronto FC supporters, Jozy Altidore injury news rates as “concerning” more than “fall over alarming.” Major League Soccer’s campaign is long and winding, and the playoff format is overly forgiving, if we are being honest. The well-paid young striker has plenty of season still ahead. But for U.S. Soccer supporters, this latest Altidore injury setback leaves a bigger imprint of worry lines. In the short-term, he won’t be around for road friendlies in June against the Netherlands and Germany, matches that were going to be toughies, anyway. It certainly won’t help being without your best striker, a strong one ... Read more

Watch Jozy Altidore score on Toronto FC debut [VIDEO]

Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore scored on his debut for the Canadian side in the first half against Vancouver Whitecaps. The finishing by Altidore was clinical, but the inch-perfect pass by Sebastian Giovinco was the difference to open the Whitecaps defense and for Altidore to knock the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle. Altidore, who had been mired in a unworkable time at Sunderland where he played with his back to goal and never found a midfielder to give him the type of service he needs, will be buoyed by the goal as he hopes ... Toronto FC Signs Jozy Altidore As Designated Player

The enigma known as Jozy Altidore has left Sunderland and joined Toronto FC as a Designated Player in MLS. Jermain Defoe’s move to Sunderland cleared the way for the two clubs to agree a swap deal with Altidore heading back to North America after playing for several years in Europe for a series of different clubs. “Our top priority is building a winning club with players that are committed to the TFC vision. Jozy is a special player, and checks off all of the boxes that we look for in a player. We are excited to finalize this deal and ... Read more

Sunderland Waiting On MLS to Process Paperwork Before Jozy Altidore Swap Is Finalized

Jermain Defoe is expected to become a Sunderland player on Friday after the final details of his transfer were tied up. However, the Black Cats are waiting for Jozy Altidore's proposed swap-move to Toronto to be processed before making an announcement. Press Association Sport understands the Defoe end of the deal is in place, but Altidore only flew to Canada on Thursday to push through his return to the MLS with Toronto five hours behind England. Sources on Wearside were not envisaging any late hitches, and remain hopeful that 32-year-old Defoe could make his debut against former club Tottenham at ... Read more
