If Jason Kreis is in trouble, so is NYCFC

Say it ain’t so, New York City FC! Say it ain’t so! SI.com is reporting that Jason Kreis’ job may be in peril. If that’s the case – not doubting SI’s reporting, just hedging against the better angles of good sense prevailing – then it says a lot about Major League Soccer’s high profile expansion club. And none of it is good. If the men on high at City Football Group dismiss Kreis, mark that down as the “starting line” for the club’s long, slow march toward ingrained nincompoopery. That’s the silly place where ignorance (of MLS), ineptitude and arrogance ... Read more

MLS Cup Final Preview Part Two: Coaching and Intangibles

In the first part of our 2009 MLS Cup Final preview, the Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles Galaxy players were assessed and compared, with a slight advantage being measured for the Galaxy. In this continuation of our analysis, attention is paid to the coaches and intangibles for both clubs. The Coaching: The Los Angeles Galaxy was a mess during the summer of 2008. They had just lost a 3-2 decision to the San Jose Earthquakes on a late goal by Ryan Cochrane, and a very disturbed David Beckham groused to the press after the game about the team’s lack ... Jason Kreis: Houdini or Under Performer?

Jason Kreis and RSL are the most frustrating duo in MLS. Former listeners to the American Soccer Show on CSRN will know that I have a soft spot for the club, not because of any geographic tie, but because of the presence of former Miami Fusion players up and down the organization, starting with GM Garth Lagerway. Much like last year RSL had a loaded squad with arguably more depth than any other in MLS. Yet, in both seasons the club needed last day heroics to qualify for the MLS postseason. I have mentioned before, that I believe Jason Kreis ... Read more

Final MLS Table

The season is over and, after a wild weekend, we have our playoff teams.  The first round of playoffs looks like this: West LA Galaxy vs Chivas USA Houston Dynamo vs Seattle Sounders East Columbus Crew vs Real Salt Lake New England Revolution vs Chicago Fire Before we start previewing this first round of the playoffs, let’s spend a moment looking back at how we got here: For the last month, the MLS essentially had a single table, and it was great!  With six team finishing within three points of each other, all hovering around that playoff line, east and ... Randon MLS Thoughts

It’s a shame that Alexi Lalas didn’t spend much time this offseason working on solidifying the Galaxy’s porous defense. Less than a minute after Tyrone Marshall tied the match yesterday, Taylor Twellman responded with a goal that gave the Galaxy yet another home defeat. How bad will it be for the league if David Beckham ends up on a team that losses early in the playoffs or worse yet fails to qualify for the playoffs. The season is early, especially LA’s season but the Galaxy have a lot of question marks, and may just be too young to win anything ... Read more

Randon Thoughts

It was outstanding to see Clint Dempsey score the winning goal for Fulham yesterday. In fact it is probably the goal that will save Fulham from the drop. Maybe that will earn Dempsey a new contract, that until yesterday was totally undeserved. It was fantastic to see Jason Kreis, one of the greats of this league’s history become the coach of Real Salt Lake. Dave Checketts patience ran out on John Ellinger before local politicians and fans patience ran out on RSL. Kreis debut featured an epic comeback to draw with Red Bull New York. Only time will see if ... Read more
