Montero’s Hat Trick Powers Sounders Past Chivas

On Saturday night Fredy Montero made sure that his 100th regular season MLS start was a memorable one by scoring his first hat-trick.  It was a night where the Sounders showed that when they are at their best, they can be one of the most clinical shooting teams in the MLS.  It was a night where 5 out of the 7 shots on goals where scores.  The scoring started from an unlikely source with Brad Evans in the 10th minute, collecting a well-placed through ball from Montero down the left side, and slotting it past Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy. Pat Onstad: What Were You Thinking?

photo courtesy Joshua Trujillo/seattlepi.com What was Pat Onstad thinking? How could he lose his cool so suddenly in the most important game in the Dynamo’s season? A dangerous cross came through the penalty area, just out of his reach, and continued over the byline. Sure, replays show Fredy Montero obstructing the goalkeeper, but not in any way dangerously. Besides, he has as much right to get position on the cross as Onstad. So when the ‘keeper charged the young striker, chest-first, knocking him to the ground, a red card from referee Ricardo Salazar was certainly next. The Dynamo would be ... Read more

Quick Friday Thoughts

Houston and Seattle played a classic match last night on national television. The unsporting Freddy Montero was unable to hand the physical pounding Dom Kinnear and the Houston defenders had in store for the much hyped, but little regarded (at least in Colombia) forward. He hasn’t earned the respect yet of fans, fellow players and the officials. While criticizing any part of the Seattle success ... Read more

Montero Called Up: Big News for MLS

Reports this morning out of Colombia indicate Fredy Montero will be called into the Colombian National Team. From my vantage point, this is a potential big step towards MLS regaining the ground its lost in South America since about the year 2000. For years, I have stated that MLS’ quality of play and quality of international signing hit a high water mark in the 1998 to 2000 period and then dipped thereafter and has only begun to recover in the past few years. I use as evidence the numbers of players called by non CONCACAF nations for World Cup qualifiers, ... Read more
