Sling Multistream adds FS2 to its FOX, FS1 and FX package

Sling TV has added FOX Sports 2 to its long list of channels that are available on its Sling Multistream package. For soccer fans, that means that subscribers can now choose from programming available from the FOX broadcasting network, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and FX. Previously, FS2 wasn’t available in the package. But now that Sling Multistream offers FOX, FS1, FS2 and FX, the legal streaming service offers the majority of FOX’s soccer coverage. The only exception is FOX Soccer Plus, which carries very few games that are not available on other FOX Sports networks. Currently, FOX Soccer 2GO ... Read more

Review of FOX’s Leverkusen vs. Bayern Munich TV coverage

There’s been no doubt that FOX Sports has done an excellent job with their Bundesliga coverage for the 2015/16 season. With a strong set of studio talent led by Ian Joy, the opinions of Eric Wynalda, Thomas Hitzlsperger and Jovan Kirovski seem better suited for the Bundesliga, a league that they undoubtedly enjoy and know a lot about. With a solid foundation in place, the stage was set on Saturday for FOX’s coverage of Bayer Leverkusen against Bayern Munich, which will probably end up being the most high-profile Bundesliga game on FOX during the second half of the current season. ... Why are Bundesliga US TV ratings so poor?

After one month of no Bundesliga soccer due to the annual winter break, German soccer returned to US airwaves last weekend with a match between Bayern Munich and Hamburg. The game was shown live on FOX Sports 1. There was very little competition on other networks. Plus the game had the advantage of being shown during a historic snow storm across the United States, which meant that many more people were off work at home with nothing to do. Yet the Hamburg-Bayern game failed to crack 100,000 viewers. For the 92,000 people who watched the game on US television, it was another ... Read more

2 years after FOX killed Sky Sports News, soccer news coverage on US TV is still lacking

During every transfer window, soccer fans in the United States are reminded how much they miss FOX Soccer’s coverage of Sky Sports News. What FOX probably initially envisioned as filler programming, the show quickly became must-see TV for many soccer fans. They were able to get their fill of the latest news, transfer rumors as well as in-depth pieces on clubs or players that you would never otherwise see on US television. For many soccer fans, Sky Sports News wasn’t all about the transfer window coverage. Sure, those days were the most memorable, but Sky Sports News offered Americans a source ... Read more

MLS games finally coming to over-the-air FOX network; 4 scheduled for 2016 season

MLS is finally coming to over-the-air network television in the United States. In the past five years, FOX Sports has televised everything from the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and Bundesliga on the over-the-air FOX channel, but hasn’t shown MLS games on its flagship network. That is until now. FOX Sports today announced that in its second year of a 8-year deal with MLS, the broadcaster will televise 4 games on the over-the-air FOX network as part of a 34-match package for the season. During 2015, FOX Sports had an average viewing audience of 196,545, so adding the 4 ... Read more

John Oliver rips into DraftKings and Fanduel daily fantasy sports games

British comedian and talk show host John Oliver tackled the topic of daily fantasy sports games on his Last Week Tonight show on HBO Sunday night. And Oliver didn’t hold anything back in his criticism of the misleading advertising by two sites in particular — DraftKings and Fanduel. For soccer fans, the story is particularly disturbing given that FOX Sports is a major investor in DraftKings, while MLS is a DraftKings partner. Daily fantasy sports sites such as DraftKings and Fanduel claim they are not gambling enterprises, but they seem awfully gamblish. If only their ads were more truthful. Watch ... Read more

FOX goes all in on Bundesliga with 8 live games scheduled for FOX network in 2016

After struggling with poor TV viewing figures for live Bundesliga games so far this season, FOX Sports has decided to throw a “Hail Mary” and show 8 Bundesliga games live on the over-the-air FOX network in 2016. The games will be shown from January through May in the second half of the 2015/16 Bundesliga season. The bold move by FOX will hopefully resuscitate the viewing figures for Bundesliga games on US TV, which so far have averaged less than 50,000 viewers per live game on English-language television. The outlier was the Bayern Munich-Augsburg game from September 13, which generated 926,000 viewers when it was shown on ... FOX’s lack of communication about Bundesliga coverage is worrisome

Other than the Premier League, arguably the most marketable European soccer league in the United States is the Bundesliga. It’s more competitive top to bottom than La Liga. The stadiums, large attendances and raucous crowds make it a better experience to watch than the Premier League. The league features many of the current World Cup champions. Plus the TV coverage of the Bundesliga is second to none, with excellent production values, and plenty of interviews and shoulder programming available. So, why is it that we’re just over 3 weeks away from the 2015/16 Bundesliga season and we haven’t heard a single word from FOX Sports about ... Read more
