Didier Deschamps’ mismanagement led to France’s downfall at Euro 2016

Didier Deschamps could not have mismanaged his France team any worse than he did at the Euros. First, after late winners obscured two otherwise unconvincing performances that brought his team safe passage to the knockout phase of the tournament, Deschamps was presented with a golden opportunity: a quasi-dead-rubber match, against Switzerland, to settle on a formation and identify his best lineup, before (cutthroat) competition begins in earnest. Yet he did not grasp at the chance. One can understand the protection of N’Golo Kanté (a top 10 player this past season, perhaps even top five) and Olivier Giroud (a top 10 player ... Read more

Ronaldo, Bale on UEFA best player shortlist

Paris (AFP) – Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale headlined a 10-man shortlist announced on Monday for the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award. Ronaldo struck the winning spot-kick as Real claimed an 11th Champions League title, beating city rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties in May, before leading his country to Euro 2016 glory. Fellow Portugal and Real team-mate Pepe also features on the shortlist along with Wales star Bale, who steered his country to the semi-finals of the European Championship in their first appearance at a major finals since 1958.  Ronaldo is favourite to the win ... Belgium part company with Marc Wilmots after Euro 2016 failure

Brussels (AFP) – Belgium have parted company with coach Marc Wilmots after a below-par Euro 2016 where they suffered quarter-final elimination to Wales, federation president Francois De Keesmaecker said on Friday. With top-quality players throughout the side such as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and midfielders Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyn, hopes for Europe’s top-rated side were sky high going into Euro 2016 in France. “Our target was at least the semi-finals,” De Keesmaecker said. Instead, an opening day defeat to Italy and elimination to outsiders Wales in the quarter-finals exposed a collective weakness. “This group should be capable of much ... Read more

Newspaper reactions to Portugal winning Euro 2016 against France [PHOTOS]

It was a night when history trumped beauty in a European Final that didn’t come to life until late. In time, few will remember the torpid tenor that preceded the late-stage drama. This was a night to join in Portugal’s jubilation at finally breaking through after so many close calls while marveling at France’s missed chances. Let’s see how the world’s papers reacted to it all: Portugal’s O Jogo captures how this team is now forever part of the nation’s fabric with “Eternal” A Bola declares “We are the European Champions” and gives props to “The Pride of Portugal” Before ... BBC and ITV’s coverage of Euro 2016 fails to impress viewers

Soccer viewers are short changed by the quality of analysis and punditry they are forced to experience, of this there can be no doubt. The sport has a variety of excellent play-by-play men such as Martin Tyler, who does a great job calling the action and informing viewers about who is doing what. But there’s a lack of decent color commentators who add to the action and offer insights that the viewers wouldn’t notice otherwise. Soccer is an extremely tactical game, described by The Secret Footballer as “almost like chess” at the highest level. Everything is worked on beforehand, set piece ... Read more

Euro 2016’s unlikely champions Portugal cap a disappointing tournament

It was almost fitting that Cristiano Ronaldo, the last vestige of Portugal’s great attacking tradition, only lasted twenty-five minutes before coming off – injured and in tears – at the Euro 2016 final on Sunday. If Portugal were going to win their first major tournament championship at the Stade de France – which they somehow did, in extra time, thanks to a magical strike from substitute striker Eder – it was always going to be with hard work, defense, and little else. A player of Ronaldo’s stature hardly fit in this Portugal outfit. Theirs was a team that started a ... Read more
