MLS will hit point of diminishing returns if league doesn’t embrace change

MLS continues to pat itself on the back. And why shouldn’t it, many would ask? The 2018 season has seen MLS reach new heights in visibility and quality of play relative to a past when the league existed in a complete vacuum and the level of soccer on display was average by any truly objective standard. If you’re interested in betting on soccer, you can use this Matchbook bonus code 2019 to bet on MLS or any other soccer league. But permanent growth is difficult in a closed-league, single-entity (MLS) or franchise-based (USL) structure. The American club game will hit ... Read more

MLS may likely seek to control USSF after 2018

Last Friday when MLS Commissioner Don Garber prepared to cast the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) ballot for FIFA President, Twitter blew up. The election, which was being broadcast live into American homes by both FOX Sports 1 and ESPN, was a major event in terms of soccer coverage in the United States, a landmark day of sorts. Garber’s casting of the USSF’s ballot in the first round for Prince Ali of Jordan seemed to reinforce to many that the Federation, which is meant to serve as a neutral governing body in the country, and MLS, whose rules and structure ... Leagues remain intent on uniting to have a greater influence on FIFA

Photo credit: AFP. Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber said Thursday soccer leagues worldwide are working to unite and exert greater influence over FIFA as the corruption-tainted body reeled from a fresh wave of arrests. Swiss authorities conducted another dawn raid at a Zurich luxury hotel Thursday as they did in May and arrested South American football confederation (CONMEBOL) president Juan Angel Napout and Alfredo Hawit, head of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean football (CONCACAF). Garber said the arrests highlighted the need for leagues around the world to join forces to exert more pressure over FIFA. SEE ... Read more

Don Garber warns: David Beckham expansion group needs to find a stadium ‘soon’

Photo credit: AFP. Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber says David Beckham’s Miami expansion group needs to solve its stadium issues “soon” or risk not being added as the league’s 24th team. The warning to Beckham’s group, which meets this weekend with Garber at the MLS Cup final, came Thursday as its latest stadium plan has hit a snag. Owners of the land involved near the stadium of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins do not want to sell. “It doesn’t seem like that land is in play because the owners don’t want to sell,” Garber said. “We will discuss that ... Frank Lampard/New York City FC Fiasco Clouds MLS Progress Made Under Don Garber

The past few weeks have been tumultuous ones for America’s top professional soccer division. Instead of slowly transitioning the league’s marketing to its new superstars and priming the way for its new high-profile clubs, the top office has instead been sidetracked by controversy.  The Frank Lampard “will he or won’t he” and “was he ever” has again thrust the league into the spotlight as “the retirement league” and not a growing global alternative to the traditional European power leagues. The New York City FC situation (and to a lesser extent Beckham Miami) has shown that instead of looking forward, the ... Read more

Why Don Garber’s Outburst Against Jurgen Klinsmann Is Good News For MLS

This week’s war of words between USMNT Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann and MLS Commissioner Don Garber is exactly what the league needs to make it more entertaining and intriguing off the pitch than on it. It’s just a shame that the teleconference call wasn’t streamed online for the rest of the soccer community to hear. While senior figures like Garber would prefer not to air his dirty laundry in public, his passionate yet defensive onslaught against Klinsmann was just the sort of drama that the league needs. For years, MLS has been woefully dull outside of games where other leagues ... Read more

Don Garber Complains There’s Too Much Soccer On TV; Wants NFL Model

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has lost his marbles. In an interview yesterday with AP Sports Editors, Garber said: ”There’s more soccer on [US] television than any other sport by far. You’ve got European soccer. You’ve got Mexican soccer. You’ve got Major League Soccer. There’s way too much soccer on television. I think all of us got to figure out a way to narrow that window so you can get a situation like the NFL has, a couple of days a week, short schedule, something that’s very compelling and very targeted.” This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone complaining about the ... NBC Sports Network and MLS Press Conference: Audio

MLS Commissioner Don Garber met with the press on Wednesday evening to discuss more details about the announcement earlier today that NBC Sports Network will begin broadcasting MLS games from 2012-2014. According to Sports Business Daily, the deal is worth close to $10 million per year to MLS — far less than the $20 million per year that MLS asked FOX Soccer for just last December. Listen to the interview below for more insight regarding where Garber and NBC Sports Network sees value.
