While the Gold Cup is starting a month later than usual, the meaning for this confederation remains the same: who is the big dog between Mexico and the United States. Maybe the other nations in this region will feel aggrieved by that statement, but the results are clear. Since the tournament’s inception, Canada (in the year 2000) is the only other nation to have hoisted the Cup. The 13th CONCACAF Gold Cup is set to kick off on July 7 and will conclude on July 26 with the winner granted a spot in the Confederation’s Cup in 2017, the summer before the next World Cup. This year’s tournament features 12 teams from across CONCACAF and are split into three groups of four. The US men’s national team played their second match of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup today against Cuba in front of large and passionate crowd in Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. After beating Belize 6-1 on Tuesday, the USA team needed a win today (as well as the score going their way in the Costa Rica-Belize game) to qualify for the quarter-finals, thereby making Thursday’s game against Costa Rica a dead rubber.
