10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 20

Here are the 10 things we learned from week 20 of the MLS season. 1. The Galaxy Raise The Stakes A fair number in MLS would tell you that the 2014 LA Galaxy was the league’s best attacking team ever. The front six – Juninho, Marcelo Sarvas, Stefan Ishizaki, Landon Donovan, Gyasi Zardes, and Robbie Keane – combined for 68 goals in the regular season, and added nine more in the postseason en route to the team’s fifth MLS Cup. It wasn’t just the numbers. The 2014 Galaxy had style too, dominating possession in most matches and carving out goals ... Read more

10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 13

Here are the 10 things we learned from week 13 of the Major League Soccer season. 1. Orlando City is the league’s best show This week started strongly for Orlando City – the club announced last Wednesday that its new soccer-specific stadium in downtown Orlando would be completely privately financed, built on land the club has bought from the city, and will have a capacity 25,000-28,000 instead of the 19,500 it was originally planned to seat. The stadium’s opening has been pushed back to the middle of 2016, meaning Orlando City will open next season at the Citrus Bowl. That ... Read more

10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 12

Here are the 10 things we learned from gameweek 12 of the Major League Soccer season. 1. Congratulations to Chris Wondolowski The wait for Wondo’s 100th MLS goal wasn’t a long one. Eight days after heading in 99 at Avaya Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes striker hit the century mark at Levi’s Stadium by converting a penalty with a mix of aplomb and ferocity that can only be described as admirable. It’s time to move on from Belgium. Wondolowski is a true American original. Wondo’s grit and determination are the heartbeat of MLS – this is a player who played ... Read more

Colorado Rapids score late to earn 1-1 draw against 10-man FC Dallas

The Colorado Rapids hosted FC Dallas in the physical and controversial second game of the MLS Friday night double-header. The teams met just two weeks ago at FC Dallas where the Rapids won 4-0 in what is their only win so far in 2015. For this clash, FC Dallas had two key players back in the lineup that missed the previous match against Colorado due to injury: captain/center back Matt Hedges, and midfielder Mauro Diaz. The inclusion of Hedges and Diaz made all the difference for FC Dallas in the first half, until a second half red card to Blas ... Read more

10 things we learned from gameweek 6 of MLS

Here are the 10 things we learned from week six of the Major League Soccer season. 1. Orlando can be as good as they want to be The Lions made one of the longest road-trips in MLS to play the newly confident Portland Timbers, and dismantled them in a convincing 2-0 win. Very few teams make the Timbers look pedestrian at Providence Park. Orlando did it with panache. They have the cohesion and interchange in midfield of a team that has been together for five years, not five months. It starts with Kaka, but when Aurelien Collin is on, Orlando ... Read more

Colorado Rapids earn first win of season with emphatic 4-0 win against Dallas [VIDEO]

Colorado Rapids snapped their long winless and scoreless streak in style, shocking FC Dallas with a 4-0 win in Frisco in the MLS Friday night match. FC Dallas might have known they were in for a long evening against the Rapids when they learned they would be without their team captain, center back, and U.S. national team prospect Matt Hedges.  After the match FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja explained that Hedges was unavailable due to the team following concussion protocol for Hedges after a ball caromed off the post and struck him in the face during training yesterday. Despite ... Read more

10 things we learned from gameweek 5 of MLS

Here are the 10 things we learned from week five of the 2015 Major League Soccer season: 1. Crisis in Philadelphia What’s the worse feeling for Philadelphia Union fans right now? That the Union became only the seventh team in MLS history to go into stoppage time winning and finish it losing, or that there’s next to no hope that next weekend and the weekend after will be any better. Things are about to get bad in Philadelphia, and when things get bad in Philadelphia, they get bad. Much of the blame for the Union’s MLS-worst start isn’t being placed ... Read more

Ranking MLS’ most popular teams; New research reveals fascinating results

Thanks to a handful of thriving teams, Major League Soccer enters a 20th season few thought it would reach back when the San Jose Clash and D.C. United kicked things off on April 6th, 1996. We know which clubs have enjoyed the most on-field success, but can we accurately say which teams are the most popular? It’s an easier answer for other leagues. The Yankee Evil Empire and Red Sox Nation hog baseball attention. The LA Lakers, despite their recent downturn, lap the NBA’s other teams in worldwide popularity. The NFL’s on-field parity leads to a more equal fan distribution, but ... Read more
