MLSGarlic: More Teams In Los Angeles Please

WARNING – MLSGarlic will be a parody series that runs on MLSTalk. We’ll only say it once, so please be warned. Ed. We here at MLS Talk love to kick a goat while it’s down, we must admit that. But sometimes you have to step back and decide not to put a boot into the caprine’s “Maaaa”-mborine, and instead laud Chivas USA for the wonderful precedent it is setting. Could anyone pick a more appropriate moniker for the MLS franchise that hangs around and chews up young American players like they were tin cans? Sure, Toronto has had its share ... Read more

MLS, Chivas USA, & NY2: Why The Goats Will Stay In LA

Though the attendance for Chivas USA’s home match against the Columbus Crew was announced at 7,121; it is easy to believe there may have been less inside the Home Depot Center. It is also easy to believe that the single game attendances for 2013 will not improve much at all this season. Perhaps, the new-look Goats will be able to pull in five figure crowds with ties against New York Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders or HDC rivals LA Galaxy. But barring a miraculous, improbable playoff run, Chivas USA will almost certainly have the lowest attendance for the second straight MLS ... Read more

Chivas USA: Major League Soccer’s Crisis Club

In 2004, Major League Soccer decided their eleventh franchise would be placed in the soccer hotbed of Southern California. Rather than move the team to San Diego or another part of the area, the league’s brain trust and team owners arrived at the conclusion Los Angeles needed a second team. Of course what many Johnny come lately fans do not understand, is the MLS of 2013 resembles little of the league 10 years ago. At the time MLS was struggling to find its footing in the American sports landscape, and adding a second team to the country’s second largest TV ... Read more

MLS Doubles Down on a Bad Bet

In last night’s MLS Talk podcast, the crew discussed the news broken by Don Garber that MLS was helping Chivas stabilize their geographic situation by seeking a permanent soccer-specific stadium in downtown Los Angles.  Speaking with Abraham Madkour of Sports Business Daily last week, the commissioner used the beleaguered West Coast franchise as an example of the future of the league in terms of infrastructure (h/t The Goat Parade for transcribing): We’ve got a handful of clubs that we want to put league resources behind, ticket sales help, marketing and other support, particularly the reconfiguration of the ownership group in ... Midweek Recap – Chicago Stumbles Again, Whitecaps Continue Chivas USA Misery

Two matches on Wednesday night, two completely different results for the playoff teams involved. Chicago 1:3 Philadelphia What is happening to Chicago? This is the second match in a row where the Fire looked outclassed. While that kind of result might be expected in the Cauldron against a better Sporting Kansas City side (as was the case on Friday night), the result Wednesday against the Philadelphia Union on home soil at Toyota Park may be telling heading towards the playoffs. See, Chicago hadn’t lost an Eastern Conference clash in Bridgeview in two years, and less than a month before the ... Read more

Montero’s Hat Trick Powers Sounders Past Chivas

On Saturday night Fredy Montero made sure that his 100th regular season MLS start was a memorable one by scoring his first hat-trick.  It was a night where the Sounders showed that when they are at their best, they can be one of the most clinical shooting teams in the MLS.  It was a night where 5 out of the 7 shots on goals where scores.  The scoring started from an unlikely source with Brad Evans in the 10th minute, collecting a well-placed through ball from Montero down the left side, and slotting it past Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy. The early ... Read more

Loss to Seattle Shows Fallacy of Chivas Playoff Hopes

In political parlance, the “laugh test” is the method to determine the reality of a proposal or idea, as in if a person laughs when you tell them your solution to a problem, it both unrealistic and ridiculous.  A few weeks back on the MLS Talk podcast (subscribe on iTunes today) I suggested that Chivas USA could make a playoff run, a suggestion that I almost made without chuckling to myself.  In fact, if you look at the standings, Chivas is in a position to make a playoff run as they are ten points behind fifth place (and slumping) Vancouver but have ... Sounders Score Four to Get into Fourth US Open Cup Final

It just never gets old when this Pacific Northwest side continues to make their march on another US Open Cup run. They may have had to play an extra round to get to that final destination, but no matter who was in their sights they found a way to get to Kansas City. Once again it was the Seattle Sounders who took the challenge that was given to them and they found a way to knock it down. At their home away from home in the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Washington their opponent was Chivas-USA who had a good ... Read more
