Alvaro Morata ready for a new lease of life at Atlético de Madrid

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata completed an 18-month loan deal to Atletico Madrid this week. The 26-year-old Spanish striker has linked back up with his boyhood club, in a move that could well re-energize his career and give him the spark he needs to return to good form. It’s no secret that Morata has struggled at Chelsea. He arrived at the club before the 2017-2018 season, just a few months after Chelsea had been crowned as Premier League champions. Huge amounts of pressure were instantly heaped on the young forward as fans expected him to fill the void of the then-exiled ... Read more

Marseille spurred on by memories of European glory

Lyon (AFP) – Marseille star Dimitri Payet is determined to go down in history by beating Atletico Madrid in Wednesday’s Europa League final as the club celebrates a quarter of a century since their greatest moment. They became the first, and to date only, French club to win the Champions League by beating AC Milan in the 1993 final, and now they are hoping to become the first team from the country to lift the Europa League trophy. “We are lucky to have the chance to continue the love affair that this club has with European competitions,” Payet told reporters ... Simeone warns of Payet threat in Europa League final

Lyon (AFP) – Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is wary of the threat posed by Marseille’s Dimitri Payet but believes his team’s extra experience will count for something in Wednesday’s Europa League final. “Experience is an important factor although it won’t completely influence the game,” said Simeone at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the match in the French city of Lyon. A strong Atletico side, with a formidable defence and an attack spearheaded by Antoine Griezmann, are the favourites, having won the Europa League twice in the last decade and also narrowly lost two Champions League finals to ... Atletico bid to erase pain of finals past in Marseille showdown

Lyon (AFP) – After painful defeats in recent continental finals, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are determined to justify their status as favourites in Wednesday’s Europa League showpiece against Marseille in Lyon. Atletico lost in extra time to Real Madrid in the Champions League final of 2014, having been seconds away from victory in 90 minutes, and then lost on penalties to their city rivals in the final of the same competition two years later. An exit from this season’s Champions League in the group stage came as a big surprise for a formidable side spearheaded by Antoine Griezmann in attack, ... Read more

Simeone ban leaves colourful Burgos in charge of Atletico

Madrid (AFP) – When German Burgos was told in 2003 he needed surgery to remove a cancerous tumour on his left kidney, Atletico Madrid’s goalkeeper said it would have to wait until after the next game.  Now Burgos is preparing to take charge of Atletico’s Europa League final against Marseille without Diego Simeone, standing in as motivator-in-chief while his head coach serves a suspension in the stands.  “I’m a bit crazy, like all goalkeepers,” Burgos once said. He has survived cancer, fronted a heavy metal band and saved a Luis Figo penalty with his face.  Burgos played for Atleti between ... Read more

Barca president admits to meeting Griezmann representatives

Barcelona (AFP) – Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted he met with representatives of Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann in October. Griezmann has indicated he wants his future decided before this summer’s World Cup after Barca were forced to deny in January they had already agreed a deal to sign the Frenchman. “We had conversations with his representative, as we have with other representatives,” Bartomeu told Catalan radio Rac1 on Monday. “This was last October, a meeting, nothing more.
