Toronto FC’s victory over Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference Final was FOX Sports 1’s most-watched MLS match in over two years, and only the second match in 2019 to average more than 300,000 viewers on the network. Over on ESPN’s networks, the Western Conference final averaged a combined 661,000 viewers across ESPN and ESPN Deportes. After ten broadcasts, the 2019 Major League Soccer playoffs averaged 260,900 viewers on English-language cable. Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday was the most-watched soccer match of the week with a combined 1.251 million viewers. It was the fourth most-watched Premier League match of 2019, the third largest Premier League audience on Telemundo in 2019 and the second most-watched of Premier League match of the 2018-2019 season. The 2019 MLS Western Conference Semi-Final between Los Angeles FC and Los Angeles Galaxy on ESPN averaged 586,000 viewers, making it the most-watched MLS Cup Playoff match on English-language cable since at least 2012. NBCSN’s Sunday broadcast of Manchester United against Liverpool produced a Total Audience Delivery of 763,000, making it the most-watched Premier League match on cable since September 1. A total of 697,000 viewers watched the match on NBCSN proper, making it the most-watched soccer match on cable during the month of October. Legal streaming of the match made up 8.65% of the total viewing audience for the game. Major League Soccer’s final regular season broadcast of 2019 featured the San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers — both fighting for a spot in the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs — and drew an audience of 226,000 viewers on ESPN. ESPN’s networks finished the regular season seeing a 2% increase in viewership, up to 246,000 viewers per match, making up some of the ground from ESPN’s 10% drop in viewership from 2017 to 2018. The 2019 Apertura edition of the Liga MX SuperClásico averaged 2 million viewers on Univision’s networks, making it the most-watched club soccer match of the year on any network. It was the top-rated Apertura SuperClásico since 2014 and saw a 17% increase in viewership over the 2018 Apertura edition. Arsenal and Manchester United’s 0-0 draw last Monday delivered NBCSN’s largest audience for a weekday Premier League match since April’s Manchester Derby with a Total Audience Delivery of 416,000 viewers, with 53,000 viewers watching via streaming. Catching up on the TV ratings for the month of September, MLS broadcasts on ESPN are averaging just 139,000 viewers in the month so far, down from an even 200,000 from the first 4 weeks of September in 2018. Overall, MLS broadcasts on ESPN are averaging 241,400 viewers in 2019, down 2% from this same time in 2018. Matches televised on the Spanish-language Univision networks have seen an even steeper decline, averaging 228,962 viewers in 2019, down 21% from 2018. Last Sunday’s North London Derby between Arsenal and Spurs averaged 1.056 million viewers across NBCSN and Telemundo, marking the fourth consecutive week that a Premier League match has drawn an audience larger than 1 million viewers. It was the second most-watched Premier League match on both NBCSN and Telemundo so far this season with Manchester United and Chelsea’s gameweek 1 match meeting topping the chart for both networks. During MLS Rivalry Week, Major League Soccer saw seven matches nationally televised across ESPN, ESPN2 and FS1, with those matches averaging 209,571 viewers. English-language viewership peaked for the second match of ESPN’s Friday night doubleheader between Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders, which averaged 304,000 viewers. Viewership for the weekend reached its lowest point the following day on ESPN2 for the Hudson River Derby that only managed to average 110,000 viewers.
