Inspired by the city’s 1990s music scene, the Liverpool 2022/23 away shirt has dropped- and it’s a certified banger.

To be worn by both the Liverpool men’s Premier League and Women’s Super League sides, the new shirt takes a white base and adds a swirling, iridescent design throughout, making for one of the most distinctive kits of the upcoming season.

Reviewing the Liverpool 2022/23 away kit

The canvas for Liverpool’s latest is the current Nike raglan sleeve cut, on material made entirely from recycled plastic bottles (for both the authentic and replica versions).

Liverpool 2022/23 away shirt

The dizzying, swirling design is inspired by “the pioneering role it [the city of Liverpool] played in the ’90s dance music scene”. Maybe a bit of a stretch there with the storytelling, but who cares when it looks this cool. The design covers the front, sleeves and rear bottom of the shirt, with a large blank white patch on the upper back for the player name and number. Considering how well the all-black trim and detailing standout against the background pattern, the blank patch seems unnecessary for the name/number and is the only real misstep on this one. The black sleeve cuff tapers off a bit as it moves away from the body, while the collar is unadorned on the front but has a splash of black on the rear neck.

As on the Liverpool home 2022 kit, the liver bird stands alone instead of the full LFC crest, which from a purely aesthetic standpoint is much stronger. The now familiar Standard Chartered logo sits center chest, with the Expedia sponsor mark on the left sleeve. The eternal flames and ’97’ in honor of those lost at Hillsborough sits on the rear neckline.

Per the official Liverpool shop, the top will be paired with plain white shorts with black detailing (no look yet at the socks).

Grade: A-

If there is any justice in the soccer universe, the Liverpool 2022/23 away kit ought to outsell their boring red home top by a mile. But whether that happens or not, this remains a stellar design. We’re only docking it slightly for the unneeded white block on the back, which robs us of a full top’s worth of that glorious trippy pattern.
