American streaming service company fuboTV has acquired the exclusive English Premier League rights in Canada. The deal begins at the start of the 2022/23 season and runs until the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign.

fuboTV and the Premier League did not release the financial terms of the acquisition.

The deal allows fuboTV to carry all 380 Premier League matches each season for three years. The provider plans to stream all games in Canada on its array of channels including the Fubo Sports Network.

David Gandler, co-founder and CEO of fuboTV, understands the magnitude of this deal for soccer in Canada.

“The Premier League is considered to be the best soccer league in the world and has a huge fan base in Canada. This deal allows us to bring yet another top-notch property to fuboTV, further differentiating our content offering, and giving Canadians another reason to cut the cord for exciting, exclusive sports content.”

fuboTV quickly moved up the ranks as a formidable streaming service, both in Canada and the United States. Just a few months ago, the provider acquired Canadian rights to Serie A, Coppa Italia, and the Supercoppa Italiana.

DAZN, the brazen over-the-top sports subscription service, previously purchased television rights to the Premier League and Serie A in Canada. The relatively young British company grabbed the important exclusivity away from traditional Canadian television networks TSN and Sportsnet. Now, fuboTV takes over both of these lucrative, popular soccer leagues in the country in a matter of months.

Premier League rights in Canada

Paul Molnar, Chief Media Officer of the Premier League, says fuboTV opens a new market of fans. Also, just as important, fuboTV easily welcomes the existing pool of EPL fans in the country.

“The Premier League is very happy to partner with fuboTV in Canada.

We know there are many passionate Premier League fans in Canada and we are very pleased that fuboTV views the Premier League as such an important part of its programming mix in this market. We look forward to working together to bring the excitement of the Premier League to both new and existing fans.”

Here Stateside, fuboTV allows access to Premier League matches via NBC and USA Network. Additionally, the array of channels provides MLS, Ligue 1, Liga MX, CONMEBOL competitions and other international tournaments.

Of course, the company is much more than just an over-the-top sports streaming service. FuboTV gives users the ability to stream over 100 channels of live television from local channels, entertainment, news, and sports.

The streaming service currently offers a free trial and users can cancel at any time. Following a week of free access, Canadian residents can choose an annual plan at CA$99.99, quarterly plan at CA$29.99 for three months, or a CA$14.99 monthly plan.

In the United States, the base monthly fee for fuboTV is $64.99. This includes the channels that cover the majority of the aforementioned soccer content.

What this means for DAZN in North America

It’s no coincidence that DAZN lost the Premier League rights the same week as acquiring BT Sport. With DAZN spending approximately $800 million to take over BT Sport, its focus now shifts to Europe.

According to a World Soccer Talk source, DAZN’s future in North America is in doubt. Our source says DAZN may exit the United States market, and is considering a departure from Canada too.

DAZN has failed to generate a lot of interest in the United States. At the same time, the streaming provider is facing a lot of pressure in Italy due to several technical issues when streaming Serie A. Needless to say, DAZN has a lot on its plate right now, and the United States isn’t a top priority.
