EPL Commentators on NBC: Jan. 26, 2021

After a weekend of FA Cup action where Manchester United defeated Liverpool, the two clubs return to Premier League matches this week in their race towards the Premier League title. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team faces Sheffield United in Wednesday’s only televised game, while Liverpool faces the daunting task of playing Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday in a match live from north London.

Only one of the matches features commentators from NBC Sports this mid week, which is the aforementioned Spurs-Liverpool game. Arlo White and Lee Dixon will be calling the game from the new White Hart Lane.

Elsewhere, Peacock TV will stream six matches from Tuesday through Wednesday including Southampton-Arsenal (in a rematch from just a few days ago after last Saturday’s FA Cup encounter), Chelsea-Wolves (without Blues manager Frank Lampard who was sacked this week), Everton-Leicester (which could end up being the match of the mid week games), Burnley-Aston Villa (in the battle of the clarets), and Crystal Palace-West Ham United (in a London derby). Last but not least, there’s a relegation battle between Brighton and Fulham on Wednesday.

surprising the extended highlights used world feed instead of their own Arlo

@cm asia, you’re spot on: Drury and Arlo have different styles but both smother the game and I’d take absolutely anyone else over either. Jon Champion and Ally McCoist are so good on Amazon Prime—witty and sharp in their observations without ceaselessly drawing attention to themselves.

Tottenham v Liverpool- Peter Drury & Andy Townsend for the World Feed

Y’all have to remember that it is an empty stadium. Dead sound is really bad so they fill the sound with their voice. Packed, stadium, understandable, but its empty, so give them the benefit of the doubt.

@cm asia. Ah.. so you don’t like the top broadcast teams of both the global feed or NBCSN. They get the high profile matches for a reason. They’re good and most acknowledge that within the industry.
I believe for you to enjoy these matches more, you are better off turning the sound completely off then.

    Michael F: Assume much?
Drury and White are equally bad.
Drury thinks every kick of every ball will determine the outcome of the World Cup. He ends up diminishing every game by trying to make every game too important.

    You also asked:
“what are you wanting to hear in its place?”

How about nothing? How about letting the moment and the pictures speak for themselves for a few brief moments?
    It’s TV, not radio.

We will have to agree to disagree.

It was Peter Drury and Matt Holland. Go to the extended highlights on Peacock and you get their call of the match.

@cm asia. I invite you to go to that extended highlight as well. Listen to Peter Drury’s call on Son’s first goal that was erased due to off sides. Drury talks right through the celebration of the goal, the same way Arlo White does!

I happen to like both play-by-play commenters a lot. I guess this is a matter of taste. But your argument doesn’t hold as much weight to me now.

so who was on the global feed of liverpool-spurs?

  9. Michael F

    January 28, 2021 at 9:17 pm

@cm asia. Point made. Although what are you wanting to hear in its place? The fake crowd noise to seize the moment? 😄. It’s his style. Not to everyone’s liking to be sure.

Michael, go back and watch all the goals, including the “non’goals”
    Arlo positively smothered the moment.

He refuses to let the action speak.
Someone scored today and Arlo bellowed how it had been 57 games since the guy last scored.
4 seconds after the ball hit the net? NEVER.
I dare you to go back and re-watch the goals today.

@Burnsey you might have a good point there, although i like Arlo’s enthusiasm for the game. I guess this is a similar complaint from some for the now retired NHL play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick. He was always talking.

A good commentator is like a good ref. You hardly notice him, but he adds to the event. Motormouth Arlo thinks he’s the reason viewers are tuning in. I have him tied with Gus Johnson at this stage…..where else could you get a Tom Brady/Pat Mahomes discussion.

what I see is way too extreme viewpoints that requires to be tempered a bit. I guess these extreme expressions is there to get a desired dramatic effect. Such drama.

It’s now crystal clear if it weren’t before. Michael F is an NBC employee or shill. Always around to pounce on any negative NBC related comment with this rosy rebuttal.

@cm Asia Your rather harsh opinion and I guess your entitled to it. But I think Arlo White is excellent at play by play. A reason why he has been part of the top match day broadcast team for NBCSN for several years. He and Lee Dixon is the perfect match.

  17. Edward

    January 28, 2021 at 3:30 pm

suspect it should be drury+beglin or townsend for the big game

    Spurs – Liverpool:
is it even possible for Arlo “My brain has a serious leak” White to shut his yap for even 5 seconds and allow us to enjoy a goal?
    He steps on absolutely everything.
Less is more, Arlo, less is more.
    He just gets worse.
