Champions League Final delivers over 2 million viewers

Univision’s TUDN delivered the highest-rated UEFA Champions League final in five years as 2.05 million viewers tuned in to see German side Bayern München walk away the 2019/2020 champion. The performance caps off a streak that saw TUDN draw the most-viewed Round of 16, Quarter-Final and Semi-Final ever for the property in the United States.

Airing from 3-5 p.m. ET on Univision and TUDN, the match peaked with 2.63 million Total Viewers 2+ and 1.33 million Adults 18-49 from 4:30-5 p.m. ET. The thrilling 1-0 finish is the fourth most-viewed final ever with Total Viewers 2+ regardless of language, and the No. 1 rated on Spanish-language television of all-time with Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-49 in the U.S. Compared to 2018/2019, this year’s final saw a +41 percent and +52 percent increase in viewership with Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-49, respectively, on Univision’s networks.

“This historic streak reaffirms for us that our big bet on European soccer has paid off as we strengthen our position as the undisputed Home of Soccer. We know our audience and their passion and fervor for world-class soccer is unmatched,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Sports, Univision. “We would like to thank UEFA for its leadership in safely resuming the season and commend them for adjusting the format under these unusual circumstances. We are excited to build on these latest milestones and continue to take the UEFA Champions League to all-new heights in the U.S.”

How much of that is drawing new Spanish listening viewers verses Anglophones watching because they don’t get CBS?

Like many others however, I who be overjoyed if CBS got the rights to La Liga (the best) and the Bundes league (next best). There’s already too much coverage of the Premier League on NBC, and too few of the very best players who are in Europe.

Yes id love for them to get the others but Bundesliga was just bought so its locked up for a few years. I don’t know when La Liga tv rights are up but I do know Premier League is up in 2 years. There are many other leagues that i follow just with scores since they are not on TV so I do get it. But the crown jewel is the Premier League right now.

Both properties just signed long term deals the past year. La Liga with BeIn and Bundesliga with ESPN. The only major soccer rights available coming up soon on US TV is the Premier League and MLS.

Serie A is also up for a new contract starting with the 2021 season.

Good catch thought it was booked up longer and signed a 6 yr deal like Bundesliga, but they did sign a 3 year deal.

I’ve been clamoring for years that CBS should get into soccer and build their non existent CBSSN programming around it. Serie A being perfect with early 9AM kick off times on the prime weekend match at 2:45PM Sunday when they have no conflicts. Plus comes much cheaper than EPL rights would be.

But it they did bid and get it only to hide it on All Access would prefer it remain on ESPN+ as the stream quality is better and can rewind/pause live matches.

Everyone is worried about Nielsen Numbers but those are outdated just like phone in polls. I understand that we need as many viewers as possible and this number is great by all aspects. However the number we may never know but is the most important atleast for the English speaking people is how many live views did CBS All Access get.

If CBS gets more than they wanted then there is a vvery good shot that they go head first for the next set of Football rights. I would be overjoyed if CBS got the rights to the Premier League and put the big early Saturday matches on CBS and CBS Sports for a leadin to College Football during those 3 months that they overlap.

I hope thia is the beginning of CBS’s Football reign and they become the new power house for our great content. Also I hope everything can be streamed thru the App for us that do not want a LiveTV service.
