Attendance for the USMNT may be down for the fourth consecutive year but that certainly doesn’t mean that nobody in the US attended soccer games in large numbers.

In 2019, a total of 48 games drew a crowd of 40,000 people or more. That’s up from 45 such games in 2018, but is down from 55 such games in 2017.

Where would MLS be without Atlanta?

Much like they did in 2017 and 2018, the city of Atlanta is leading the charge for the title of best soccer city in America. Not only did every single MLS regular season game hit the mark, but their playoff games did as well, as did their CONCACAF Champions League game against Monterrey. In addition to that, Mercedes-Benz Stadium played host to its first ever international friendly as Mexico (and former Atlanta United boss Tata Martino) played Venezuela (and current Atlanta United star Josef Martinez) in front of over 51,000 people.

Seattle seems to have gotten back into drawing big crowds regularly. It seemed like over the last few years that the emergence of Atlanta as a massive soccer scene had caused Seattle to sort of fade away from the public eye. Not the case this year as they had several games crack 40,000 and hosted the MLS Cup Final that drew the fourth largest crowd in the country this year.

One disappointing note is that no games had an attendance of greater than 80,000 in 2019. Two of those games happened in 2018 (one of which hit over 100,000) and three of them took place in 2017. The ceiling may have been lowered given the burnout of watching so much soccer during the summer of 2019 (filled with Gold Cup, Copa America and the Women’s World Cup) but the floor seems to have been raised. Forty eight games in the US drew over 40,000 people. That’s a good thing.
