Celtic crush Dundee to stretch lead in Scottish Premiership

Glasgow (AFP) – Celtic dismantled bottom side Dundee 3-0 in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday as Aberdeen stayed in touch with the champions after victory against Hearts.

Mikey Johnston, 19, deputising for the injured Odsonne Edouard, Celtic’s only recognised centre forward, opened the scoring with a drive in the 43rd minute of a one-sided match.

Johnston, making only his second league start this season after scoring as a substitute against Motherwell in midweek, doubled his tally in the 50th minute with a header from close range.

Defender Filip Benkovic added a third in the 69th minute with a strike from 12 yards.

Celtic, on 39 points after 18 matches, are three clear of Aberdeen, who have played a game more. Rangers, a point behind the Dons, are in action against St Johnstone on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic face Aberdeen on December 26 before the Old Firm match against Rangers at Ibrox on December 29, their last before the winter break.

“It was probably one of the most enjoyable games I have been involved in during my two-and-a-half years here,” said Rodgers.

“Sometimes the team at this part of the year has been a little bit leggy, but I really enjoyed watching us today.”

Striker Sam Cosgrove scored a double for Aberdeen as they beat Hearts 2-0.

The Englishman headed home the opener after just 63 seconds and added a second from the penalty spot midway through the second half to earn the home side the points.

Hamilton drew 1-1 with Kilmarnock while Hibernian and Livingstone earned a point apiece in a 1-1 draw. St Mirren beat Motherwell 1-0.
