Gor Mahia shed goal-shy image with four in CAF romp

Johannesburg (AFP) – Gor Mahia of Kenya shed a goal-shy record by trouncing Young Africans of Tanzania 4-0 Wednesday and boosting their hopes of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals.

Ivorian Ephrem Guikan was the matchday 3 destroyer-in-chief, scoring late in each half, after Rwandan Jacques Tuyisenge had broken the deadlock in Nairobi.

A Mwinyi Haji own-goal put 1987 African Cup Winners Cup title-holders Gor 3-0 ahead before a small but vibrant crowd in the Kenyan capital.

In two earlier group games, Gor scored just once in the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League.

This year, Gor became the first Kenyan club to reach the Confederation Cup group stage and a last-eight spot is a realistic prospect with half the Group D fixtures completed.

USM Alger of Algeria snatched stoppage-time goals in each half to beat Rayon Sports of Rwanda 2-1 in Kigali and remain leaders with seven points from three matches.

Farouk Chafai cancelled the lead Ismaila Diarra gave Rayon and Abdelraouf Benguit snatched the winning goal three minutes into additional time.

Gor lie second with five points followed by Rayon with two and Young Africans have just one after humiliating four-goal away losses to USMA and the Kenyans.

Raja Casablanca of Morocco topped Group A through a 1-0 win over 10-man ASEC Mimosas of the Ivory Coast in Abidjan with Mahmoud Benhalib converting a second-half penalty.

It was the sixth Confederation Cup goal for Benhalib, elevating him to co-leading scorer with Ayoub el Kaabi from Renaissance Berkane of Morocco.

ASEC goalkeeper Abdoul Karim Cisse was sent off midway through the second half of the showdown between former African champions.

Aduana Stars of Ghana, who came from behind three times to hold Raja during the last matchday, triumphed 2-1 at home to V Club from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Bright Adjei and Yahaya Mohammed netted early goals for Aduana and Glody Muzinga halved the deficit midway through the opening half.

Raja have six points, Aduana and V Club four each and ASEC three in a section where only the Ghanaians have not won a CAF competition.

Enyimba of Nigeria climbed from third to first in Group C by edging Williamsville of the Ivory Coast 1-0 in a scrappy match on a cut-up Port Harcourt pitch.

Ibrahim Mustapha was the 10th-minute match-winner, powering down the middle and holding off a defender before pushing the ball wide of goalkeeper Boris Mandjui.

African rookies Williamsville offered little in attack apart from a looping Kouadio N’da shot that was well saved by Abdul Dauda.

Enyimba have six points, Djoliba of Mali and Williamsville four each and CARA of Congo Brazzaville three.

Djoliba won for the first time in the group with goals from Mamadou Cisse and Mahamadou Coulibaly delivering a 2-0 win over CARA in Bamako.

Berkane surrendered the last 100 percent group record when held 0-0 at home in Group B by Al Masry of Egypt.

Experienced African campaigners Al Hilal of Sudan continued to underperform as they relinquished a two-lead goal in a 2-2 draw at home to UD Songo of Mozambique.

Berkane have seven points, Masry five, Hilal two and Songo one.

All eight matchday 4 fixtures are scheduled for July 29.
